MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated 'Users Admin' delegated account (the Permissions::canAdminUsers() role) on a WWBN AVideo instance before version 29.4.0; the attacker must already possess or have compromised this specific delegated role. Given that access, the flaw is triggered simply by submitting POST requests to confirmDeleteUser.json.php or userAddNew.json.php with an administrator's user ID as the target - no additional configuration, user interaction, or admin-level privilege is needed. Limiting factors: it is NOT exploitable by anonymous/unauthenticated visitors or ordinary users (the delegated Users Admin role is a prerequisite), and only affects versions prior to 29.4.0; the UI already hides admin-row commands from non-admins, so exploitation requires crafting requests directly rather than using the normal interface. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but privilege-gated authorization flaw (CWE-863), not a high-CVSS-but-illusory issue, though its real-world urgency is moderate. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:H, score 7.0) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, no user interaction, but requiring high privileges (PR:H) - specifically a delegated 'Users Admin' account. The impact is integrity and availability (VI:H/VA:H) with no confidentiality loss (VC:N), matching an attacker who can delete/demote admin accounts and their videos but not exfiltrate data. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC indicator was provided, so there is no public evidence of active or probable exploitation - the signals do not conflict, they are simply absent on the exploitation-likelihood side. The patch (commit 9c7cadaee8f) and vendor GHSA advisory are confirmed, and the fix logic independently corroborates the described attack surface (confirmDeleteUser/userAddNew/API delete paths now reject admin targets from non-admins). Net: a real insider/compromised-delegate privilege-boundary bug worth patching, but not a mass-exploitation emergency given the PR:H prerequisite and niche product footprint. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds (or compromises) a delegated 'Users Admin' account - a role intended only to manage ordinary users - sends a crafted request to confirmDeleteUser.json.php or userAddNew.json.php specifying an administrator's user ID. Because the pre-patch code never verifies the target is an admin, the attacker deletes the administrator's account and videos, or edits/demotes the admin to a normal user, breaking the privilege boundary. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the attack is simple HTTP POSTs with no user interaction required. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 22, 2026
Delegated 'Users Admin' accounts in WWBN AVideo before version 29.4.0 can delete, overwrite, or demote full administrator accounts by posting directly to confirmDeleteUser.json.php or userAddNew.json.php with an administrator's user ID, destroying that admin's videos and account in the process. The flaw is a server-side authorization gap: the interface already hides admin-row actions from non-admins, but the endpoints themselves never re-verified that the caller outranks the target, so a crafted request bypasses the cosmetic UI restriction. Exploitation requires an authenticated account holding the Permissions::canAdminUsers() delegated role, so anonymous visitors and ordinary users are not affected; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and no EPSS or CISA KEV signal is present in the available data.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to WWBN AVideo 29.4.0 or later, which is the vendor-released patched version containing commit 9c7cadaee8f472e9f6584b941af1bdaed5668145 (see the advisory at https://github.com/WWBN/AVideo/security/advisories/GHSA-mp89-8x4j-2grx). The patch introduces a named MySQL advisory lock plus a SELECT ... FOR UPDATE re-read of the target's isAdmin flag so that promotion and deletion serialize, and adds explicit 'only an admin can edit/delete an admin account' rejections in userAddNew.json.php, User::delete(), and the API plugin's user delete handler. If upgrading immediately is not possible, the effective compensating control is to stop granting the delegated Users Admin role (Permissions::canAdminUsers()) to anyone who is not already a trusted full administrator, since that role is the sole prerequisite for exploitation; audit which accounts currently hold it and demote or remove the role, accepting that the delegated users-management workflow is disabled for those accounts. In parallel, review administrator accounts for unexpected deletions, profile/email changes, or isAdmin demotions and restore them, and consider temporarily blocking POST requests to confirmDeleteUser.json.php and userAddNew.json.php at the web server or WAF for non-admin source identities. Note that the UI already hides admin rows from non-admins, so blocking only the rendered interface does nothing - enforcement must happen at the endpoint or role level, and any WAF rule keyed on the 'id' parameter must be maintained as a stopgap rather than a fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
AVideo is a PHP video CMS backed by MySQL, and this is a classic CWE-863 incorrect authorization defect rather than an injection or memory-safety issue. The application defines a delegated 'Users Admin' role (Permissions::canAdminUsers()) intended for support staff who may manage ordinary users, but the JSON endpoints objects/confirmDeleteUser.json.php and objects/userAddNew.json.php performed only role-entry checks, never a comparative check that the acting user is itself a full administrator before touching an account whose isAdmin flag is set. Because User::setIsAdmin() is invoked during the save path, editing an administrator through userAddNew.json.php also silently demotes them, which is a privilege-escalation-adjacent side effect on top of the destructive deletion path. The upstream fix commit 9c7cadaee8f472e9f6584b941af1bdaed5668145 adds a new objects/UserAccountMutationLock.php helper that takes a MySQL advisory lock via SELECT GET_LOCK() and performs a locking SELECT isAdmin FROM users ... FOR UPDATE, deliberately chosen over a surrounding transaction because named locks survive commits made by plugins. Account promotion (User::save()) and deletion (User::delete()) now serialize on that lock and re-read isAdmin after acquiring it, closing a time-of-check/time-of-use window in which a user promoted to administrator concurrently could still be deleted by a stale, non-admin-privileged object; the same guard is applied in userAddNew.json.php and in the API plugin's set_api_user_delete handler. The commit also documents an explicitly non-vulnerable, intentionally unfixed 'swap into any non-admin user' support feature in plugin/CustomizeUser/swapUser.json.php, noting admin targets are already blocked there.

DescriptionCVE.org
WWBN AVideo before 29.4.0 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability that allows delegated Users Admin accounts to delete or modify administrator accounts. Attackers can submit requests to confirmDeleteUser.json.php or userAddNew.json.php targeting administrators to delete their videos and accounts, or change and demote them.
Technical POC Analysis
CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization), specifically a missing target-side privilege check layered on top of a correct actor-side check that was scoped too loosely.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
WWBN AVideo deployments prior to 29.4.0 allow delegated 'Users Admin' accounts to delete, overwrite, or demote full administrators through direct endpoint requests, potentially destroying administrator accounts and hosted video content. Because exploitation requires an existing delegated administrative role, the primary organizational risk is insider misuse or compromise of a delegated account rather than anonymous external attack, and leadership should prioritize inventory, least-privilege review, and prompt upgrade to 29.4.0. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the administrative impact still warrants remediation.
