| Exploitation Conditions | Applies to WhoDB server (non-local) mode where the DuckDB plugin is reachable: the attacker opens a DuckDB file connection through the query editor without credentials and runs read_text, read_blob, COPY ... TO, or ATTACH to read or overwrite arbitrary host files, because versions 0.104.0 through 0.134.0 opened the DuckDB DSN without enable_external_access=false or lock_configuration=true. The limiting factor captured by CVSS AT:P is that the attacker must be able to reach and initiate the DuckDB query path; exploitation is bounded to the affected version range (fixed in 0.135.0) and to deployments exposing the query editor over the network. File access is further bounded by the privileges of the WhoDB process on the host. |
| Impact | Multiple signals converge on genuine priority. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 score is 9.2 (Critical) with AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, indicating remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity access, and VC:H/VI:H confirming both arbitrary file read and write of sensitive host data. The one mitigating metric is AT:P (attack requirement present), reflecting that the attacker must reach and open a DuckDB connection through the query editor rather than hitting a universally-exposed endpoint. No EPSS score, SSVC decision data, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so exploitation-probability and in-the-wild signals cannot be quantified - this is a data gap, not evidence of low risk. The flaw was reported by VulnCheck (a credible research source) and a vendor patch plus security advisory (GHSA-x3h5-pr45-fx4r) exist, which both validates the finding and typically shortens the window before exploit code appears. Net assessment: a real, high-priority issue for any internet- or network-reachable WhoDB server-mode deployment, tempered only by the product's limited deployment footprint and the requirement that the DuckDB query path be reachable. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach a network-exposed WhoDB instance in server mode opens the query editor and connects to a DuckDB file without supplying credentials. They then issue DuckDB filesystem functions such as read_text, read_blob, or COPY ... TO to read the application's session.key and stored database credentials, or to overwrite arbitrary files the WhoDB process can access. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but the low attack complexity and unauthenticated network vector make reliable exploitation straightforward once the query path is reached. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 18, 2026
WhoDB 0.104.0 through 0.134.0 lets a remote attacker open a DuckDB file connection through the query editor without credentials and then misuse DuckDB's filesystem functions (read_text, read_blob, COPY ... TO, ATTACH) to read or overwrite arbitrary files on the host, including session.key and stored database credentials. The exposure is limited to server (non-local) deployments where the DuckDB plugin is reachable over the network, which is the attack-requirements precondition (AT:P) captured in the CVSS 4.0 vector, and the blast radius is bounded by the privileges of the WhoDB process. Vendor-released patch: 0.135.0; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, no CISA KEV listing, and no EPSS score was supplied in the available intelligence.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to WhoDB 0.135.0 or later (release tag https://github.com/clidey/whodb/releases/tag/0.135.0, fixing commit 80111c9ebc2eec382222629ba9fd26236f1a40e6), which forces enable_external_access=false, disables autoinstall/autoload and community extensions, sets lock_configuration=true for every non-local DuckDB connection, verifies the settings at runtime, and rejects database paths containing '?' or '#'. Per GHSA-x3h5-pr45-fx4r, if an immediate upgrade is not possible, run WhoDB in local/desktop mode so the restricted DSN path is not bypassed and avoid exposing the query editor to untrusted networks - front it with an authenticating reverse proxy or network policy restricted to trusted operators, accepting that this only reduces reachability and does not remove the underlying file read/write primitive for anyone who gets in. Run the WhoDB process as a low-privilege, non-root account in a container with a read-only root filesystem and no host bind mounts for credentials, and tighten file permissions on session.key and any stored connection credentials so a successful traversal yields as little as possible; the trade-off is that legitimate DuckDB workflows using read_csv/COPY/ATTACH against external files will stop working in server mode once 0.135.0 is applied, so plan for those operations to run in local/desktop mode instead.

Technical ContextAI · show details
WhoDB is a database exploration/administration UI that ships a DuckDB plugin; in server mode the query editor forwards user-supplied SQL to a DuckDB instance opened via a DSN built in core/src/plugins/duckdb/db.go. DuckDB is an embedded OLAP engine whose SQL surface includes file-touching primitives: read_text, read_blob, read_csv, COPY ... TO, and ATTACH, all of which are governed by the engine's enable_external_access, autoinstall_known_extensions, autoload_known_extensions, allow_community_extensions, and lock_configuration settings. Prior to 0.135.0 those hardening options were applied only when the process detected local/desktop mode, so a server-mode DSN was opened fully unrestricted and any SQL reaching the editor could traverse the host filesystem (CWE-22) regardless of the database path the user selected. The fix in commit 80111c9 appends a restricted option string (enable_external_access=false, autoinstall_known_extensions=false, autoload_known_extensions=false, allow_community_extensions=false, lock_configuration=true) whenever the instance is not in local mode, then re-reads those settings through current_setting and closes the connection if any of them failed to take effect. The patch also rejects database file paths containing '?' or '#', which the driver would otherwise interpret as DSN option/fragment delimiters and could use to discard the appended security options, and it adds a regression test (db_security_test.go) that verifies read_csv, COPY ... TO, ATTACH, and SET enable_external_access=true all fail on a guarded connection.

Remote unauthenticated use of the DuckDB query editor (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N, AC:L) yields arbitrary file read and write (C:H/I:H) with limited availability impact from overwrites (A:L); scope unchanged as access stays within the WhoDB process authority.

DescriptionCVE.org
WhoDB 0.104.0 before 0.135.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows remote attackers to read and write arbitrary host files by running DuckDB filesystem functions through the query editor. Attackers can log in to a DuckDB file without credentials and use read_text, read_blob, COPY ... TO or ATTACH to steal session.key and stored database credentials or overwrite files.

Executive ViewAI
WhoDB versions 0.104.0 through 0.134.0 in network-reachable server deployments expose host files and stored credentials through the DuckDB plugin, allowing remote attackers to read or overwrite sensitive files such as session keys and database credentials. This is a critical-severity exposure for organizations running WhoDB as a shared service with the DuckDB plugin accessible over the network, and leadership should care because credential theft and host file tampering can cascade into broader compromise. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but the vendor has released a fixed version.
Apply vendor patch.
