The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that ATS is passing through a chunked transfer AND that trailer dropping (proxy.config.http.drop_chunked_trailers) is active: this is ON by default in 10.x (so versions 10.0.0-10.1.4 and 10.2.0 are exposed in default configuration), but OFF by default in 8.1.11 and 9.2.5-9.2.15, which are vulnerable ONLY where an operator has explicitly enabled the setting. The attacker must also send a chunked message that includes trailers for ATS to attempt to drop. Limiting factors: impact is confined to stalling individual transfers until the configured connection timeout (bounding resource hold time), there is no code execution or data exposure, and the 8.x/9.x branches depend on a non-default configuration.

Impact

This is a genuine but modest-severity denial-of-service issue, not a high-urgency priority. The CVSS 3.1 base score of 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L) reflects a network-reachable, unauthenticated, low-complexity flaw with only LOW availability impact and no confidentiality or integrity impact - consistent with CWE-400 resource/connection exhaustion. The real-world impact is bounded: per the description, the bug stalls an individual chunked transfer until the connection times out rather than crashing the proxy, so A:L (not A:H) is appropriate. No EPSS score was supplied, the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit was referenced - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. One important nuance the signals do not fully capture: default-configuration exposure is version-dependent. Trailer dropping (proxy.config.http.drop_chunked_trailers) is ON by default in 10.x, so 10.0.0-10.1.4 and 10.2.0 are exploitable out of the box; 8.1.11 and 9.2.5-9.2.15 are affected ONLY if an operator explicitly enabled the feature, which materially lowers real-world exposure for those branches. PR:N is reasonable because no attacker credentials are needed, though exploitability on 8.x/9.x hinges on a non-default server-side setting rather than on the attacker.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A remote, unauthenticated attacker sends an HTTP request/response through an ATS proxy running with chunked-trailer dropping enabled, using a chunked transfer that includes trailers. Because ATS waits for trailer bytes it has already stripped, the transfer stalls and the connection is held open until it times out, tying up the connection and associated resources. Repeating this across many connections can degrade availability; no public exploit code was referenced.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026

Apache Traffic Server can be stalled by a crafted chunked HTTP transfer whose trailers ATS has been configured to strip: the proxy discards the trailer bytes but still waits for them, so the transaction hangs until the connection timeout expires. Versions 10.0.0 through 10.1.4 and 10.2.0 are exposed in their default configuration because proxy.config.http.drop_chunked_trailers is enabled by default in the 10.x line, while 8.1.11 and 9.2.5 through 9.2.15 are affected only where an operator has explicitly turned that setting on. Rated CVSS 5.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, availability-only Low), this is a modest denial-of-service issue that degrades individual proxied connections rather than the whole service; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Apache Traffic Server 10.1.5 or 10.2.1, which correct the trailer-dropping state machine (advisory: https://lists.apache.org/thread/r95dq29ywcd1f4x30snxlqmb12z4s4kc). Deployments on 8.x or 9.2.x that have left the default in place can reduce exposure immediately by confirming that proxy.config.http.drop_chunked_trailers remains disabled (0) in records.config - these branches are only vulnerable when an operator has opted in, so no change may be needed. For 10.x hosts that cannot be patched promptly, the primary workaround is to set proxy.config.http.drop_chunked_trailers to 0, with the trade-off that trailers are then forwarded to upstream/origin servers, which can leak hop-by-hop metadata and may break backends that do not expect trailer fields. A secondary compensating control is to shorten proxy.config.http.transaction_no_activity_timeout_out (and related connection timeouts) so any stalled transfer is reclaimed quickly, at the cost of prematurely terminating legitimately slow streaming or long-poll requests. Capacity controls such as tightening proxy.config.net.connections_throttle or per-origin connection limits reduce the blast radius of many simultaneous stalled transfers but do not fix the underlying bug and can throttle legitimate traffic.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) arising from a state-machine mismatch in ATS's HTTP/1.1 chunked transfer handling. Chunked encoding allows a message body to be sent as a series of size-prefixed chunks followed by a terminating zero-length chunk and an optional trailer section of header fields. When proxy.config.http.drop_chunked_trailers is enabled, ATS parses the trailer section and then removes it before forwarding the message, but the parser continues to wait for trailer bytes that the dropping logic has already consumed/discarded, leaving the transaction blocked until the configured connection timeout fires. The relevant CPE, cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_traffic_server, covers the caching proxy itself as deployed in forward- and reverse-proxy roles, so any traffic path where ATS relays chunked uploads or responses with trailers (for example gRPC-style or streaming APIs) is a plausible trigger surface. The attack is a single unauthenticated network request with low complexity, and the impact is bounded: no code execution, no memory corruption, and no data exposure - only connection-slot and timing pressure proportional to how many stalled transfers an attacker can sustain within the timeout window.

DescriptionCVE.org

Apache Traffic Server can stall a chunked transfer that it passes through with its trailers removed (proxy.config.http.drop_chunked_trailers) until the connection times out, because it waits for the trailer bytes it has already dropped. Trailer dropping is on by default in 10.x. In 8.1.11 and 9.2.x it is off by default, and those versions are affected only if it is enabled.

This issue affects Apache Traffic Server: 8.1.11, from 9.2.5 through 9.2.15, from 10.0.0 through 10.1.4, 10.2.0.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 10.1.5 or 10.2.1, which fix the issue.
