The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

No special conditions - remote unauthenticated POST to /api/wizard/storage against default ChronoFrame deployments. The root cause is that the setup-wizard API handlers (server/api/wizard/) fail to require authentication or to verify that initial setup is already complete, so even fully configured, production instances remain re-configurable. The only meaningful limiting factor is network reachability of the instance: an attacker must be able to reach the HTTP endpoint (internet-exposed or same-network). No authentication, no user interaction, no non-default feature toggle, and no specific platform are required.

Impact

All signals point to a genuinely high-priority flaw for any exposed ChronoFrame instance, tempered only by the product's tiny footprint. The vendor/VulnCheck CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes trivial remote exploitation with no authentication, no user interaction, and low complexity, and my independent assessment agrees - a single unauthenticated POST reconfigures the instance. Impact is integrity-dominant (VI:H): the attacker overwrites storage, site, and map settings, with secondary confidentiality (VC:L, future uploads/reads flow through attacker-controlled storage) and availability (VA:L, legitimate storage reads can break). EPSS is not provided (unknown) and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; a detailed public technical writeup (hackmd) documents the exact attack but the input carries no explicit POC/exploit-code flag. Net: this is a real, easily exploitable issue warranting prompt patching wherever ChronoFrame ≤1.0.0 is internet-reachable, but the obscure, hobby-scale deployment base means any exploitation is far more likely to be targeted or opportunistic scanning than mass-scale - do not let the 8.8 score imply broad enterprise risk.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker locates an internet-reachable ChronoFrame instance (even one already fully set up) and sends an unauthenticated POST to /api/wizard/storage specifying their own S3 or OpenList credentials, because the setup-wizard handlers never verify authentication or that setup is already complete. Subsequent uploads and storage reads are silently routed through the attacker's provider, letting them capture new content and tamper with served media, while site and map settings can likewise be overwritten. A public technical writeup documents the exact request, though the input contains no confirmed proof-of-concept exploit flag.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026

Unauthenticated configuration takeover of ChronoFrame 1.0.0 and earlier lets any attacker who can reach the HTTP service POST to the setup-wizard API and repoint instance storage to an attacker-controlled S3 or OpenList backend while overwriting site and map settings. The flaw covers every release through 1.0.0 (CPE cpe:2.3:a:hoshinosuzumi:chronoframe:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) and remains exploitable on instances where initial setup is already complete, because the /api/wizard/ handlers enforce neither authentication nor a setup-complete check. No public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV entry, though a public technical writeup describes the attack path; the independent assessment (CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:L) rates this high priority for any network-exposed deployment.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis: ChronoFrame 1.0.0 is the latest tagged release and the available references point to the vulnerable source rather than to a fix commit or patched version. Until a fixed release exists, block the wizard API at the edge by denying POST (and ideally all methods) to /api/wizard/* in your reverse proxy, WAF, or firewall, and restrict the whole service to a trusted network or VPN instead of exposing it to the internet; the trade-off is that blocking /api/wizard/* also disables legitimate first-run setup, so complete installation first or temporarily allow-list your admin IP and then lock the path down permanently. A code-level workaround is to insert an authentication and setup-complete guard into the server/api/wizard/ routes or to delete those route files from the build, accepting that reconfiguration through the UI is unavailable until an upstream fix is applied. Treat any instance that was internet-exposed as potentially reconfigured: inspect the stored provider configuration (S3 endpoint/bucket or OpenList URL) for attacker-controlled values, restore the intended provider, rotate credentials for legitimate storage backends, and review site and map settings for unauthorized changes, since the writeup shows those are writable as well. Watch the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/chronoframe-through-1.0.0-missing-authentication-via-setup-wizard-api) and the project repository (https://github.com/HoshinoSuzumi/chronoframe) for the eventual patch, which should add authentication plus a check that setup is already complete.

Technical ContextAI · show details

ChronoFrame is a self-hosted gallery and mapping application implemented with a Nuxt-style TypeScript server in which file operations are dispatched through pluggable storage providers; the vulnerable code is the first-run setup wizard under server/api/wizard/, with storage.post.ts (lines 1-26 of the v1.0.0 tag) accepting provider configuration for S3-compatible endpoints and OpenList. The root cause is CWE-306, Missing Authentication for Critical Function: these handlers were written for initial provisioning and therefore never gate on an authenticated session nor on a flag indicating that setup has already been completed, so they stay reachable on fully configured production instances. Because the storage configuration determines where uploads are written and where reads are resolved, an attacker who repoints it gains durable influence over both future data ingested by the application and content served back to users, while the sibling handlers allow site and map settings to be overwritten. That is why the independent assessment rates integrity impact High with confidentiality and availability Low (CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:L, unauthenticated, no user interaction, no scope change); the published CVSS 4.0 vector is consistent, showing AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N with VI:H and VC:L/VA:L. The wildcard-version CPE for hoshinosuzumi:chronoframe reflects that all published releases through 1.0.0 carry the same unguarded handlers.

DescriptionCVE.org

ChronoFrame through 1.0.0 contains a missing authentication vulnerability in the server/api/wizard/ handlers that allows unauthenticated attackers to reconfigure already configured instances. Attackers can POST to /api/wizard/storage to activate an attacker-controlled S3 or OpenList provider, redirecting uploads and storage reads, and overwrite site and map settings.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

ChronoFrame (all releases through 1.0.0) exposes an unauthenticated setup-wizard API that lets anyone with network reach to hijack the instance's storage backend and rewrite site and map settings, with no vendor patch currently available. Because the flaw persists even after initial setup is complete, every internet- or intranet-exposed ChronoFrame deployment is a live target for data redirection to attacker-controlled infrastructure. Leadership should treat this as an active exposure-management priority: affected teams manage hosted location data, and a successful takeover can silently exfiltrate or destroy that data while presenting a trusted interface to end users.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: block or deny the /api/wizard/ handler paths at the reverse proxy, WAF, or API gateway; restrict network access to the ChronoFrame HTTP service to trusted hosts or VPN only; place instances behind network segmentation with no direct internet exposure; monitor and alert on configuration or storage-backend endpoint changes; snapshot configuration for rollback and rotate any storage credentials referenced by ChronoFrame.
