| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the Parse Server email verification and/or password-reset features to be configured and enabled (these endpoints must exist and dispatch mail). Exploitation also requires that the configured mail/SMTP provider reject, rate-limit, or be unavailable when the email is sent - the AT:P attack requirement - a state an attacker can induce by rapidly issuing many requests to trigger provider rate-limiting. Only public application keys are needed (no user account or authentication), and affected versions are Parse Server before 8.6.97 and the 9.0.0 line before 9.10.2-alpha.6. Deployments with email flows disabled, or on patched versions that catch the send error, are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a genuine, easily-triggered availability risk rather than an inflated high-CVSS score. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VA:H) correctly captures a network-reachable, unauthenticated denial-of-service with no confidentiality or integrity impact - a full process crash (CWE-248, uncaught exception). The one signal tempering raw severity is AT:P (attack requirement 'Present'): exploitation depends on the mail provider rejecting, rate-limiting, or being unavailable at request time, which the description confirms. However, an attacker can realistically force this condition simply by flooding verification/reset requests until the provider rate-limits, making the 'requirement' largely attacker-controllable and the 8.2 rating credible. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the supplied data, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - this is not confirmed active exploitation. Net: a real patching priority for exposed Parse Server deployments with email flows enabled, but DoS-only (no data compromise) and no evidence of in-the-wild use. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker possessing only the public Parse application keys (no account required) repeatedly calls the sign-up, email-verification, or password-reset endpoints. Because Parse Server does not catch errors thrown while dispatching the email, a single rejection, rate-limit, or outage from the mail provider raises an unhandled exception that terminates the Node.js process. No public exploit code is referenced, but the attack requires no special tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Unauthenticated remote attackers can terminate the Parse Server process by driving the email verification or password-reset flow while the configured mail provider rejects, rate-limits, or is unavailable - a state an attacker can force by rapidly issuing requests until the provider throttles. Only public application keys are required (no user account), and affected deployments are Parse Server before 8.6.97 and the 9.0.0 line before 9.10.2-alpha.6, with the server's email features enabled. The underlying defect is an uncaught exception (CWE-248) raised on a failed send that aborts the Node.js process, so a single rejected message produces a full service outage; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and deployments with email flows disabled are unaffected.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor fix: upgrade to Parse Server 8.6.97 on the 8.x line or to 9.10.2-alpha.6 (or later) on the 9.x line, per the GitHub advisory at https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/security/advisories/GHSA-46jj-qw3p-48fc; note that the cited 9.x fix is a pre-release alpha tag, so 9.x operators should validate on a staging instance and move to the corresponding stable release once published, and 8.x operators can adopt 8.6.97 directly. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the effective compensating controls are: set verifyUserEmails to false and disable the password-reset endpoint (or block /parse/requestPasswordReset and verification-resend routes at the reverse proxy), accepting the trade-off that users cannot self-verify or recover accounts and must be handled out-of-band by administrators; wrap the configured mail adapter so that send() failures are caught and logged rather than propagated (a code change, and it may suppress legitimate delivery-error telemetry unless logging is retained alongside); and rate-limit signup and password-reset requests per application key or source IP at the edge to prevent an attacker from forcing the provider into the throttled state required for exploitation. Running the process under PM2, systemd, or Kubernetes with automatic restart reduces outage duration but does not prevent the crash or the loss of in-flight requests and can produce a crash loop, so it should only be treated as a stopgap; suppressing or altering Node.js unhandled-rejection behavior is not a recommended fix because it degrades the server's overall error handling. After patching, verify the crash path is closed by intentionally pointing the mail adapter at an unavailable endpoint and confirming the server logs the failure and stays up.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-248 (Uncaught Exception) in Parse Server's asynchronous email dispatch path. When user verification or password reset is enabled, signup, verification-resend, and password-reset requests cause the server to hand a message to the configured mail adapter (SMTP, Mailgun, SendGrid, etc.). Errors and promise rejections from that adapter - provider-side rejections, rate limiting (HTTP 429/SMTP throttling), connection failures, or total provider unavailability - are not caught in Parse Server before 8.6.97 and 9.0.0-9.10.2-alpha.5, so the rejection propagates as an unhandled error and the Node.js process exits. This is the classic Node.js failure mode in which an unhandled promise rejection or uncaught exception is fatal by default; the affected library is parse-server itself rather than the mail transport, since the transport is doing the correct thing by reporting the failure. Both the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VA:H, no confidentiality or integrity impact) and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) encode the same prerequisite: the attack works only when the mail provider is in a failing state (AT:P), which an attacker can induce by bursting requests to trip provider rate limits, and only when the email endpoints exist and are configured. Exploitation is remote and does not require authentication or a user account - public application keys, which ship inside client applications, are sufficient - but an unpatched instance with mail flows disabled has no reachable path, and configurations running a custom mail adapter that already wraps send() in try/catch are likewise insulated. CPE data was not supplied with this record; affected component is the parse-community parse-server Node.js package.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Parse Server before 8.6.97 and 9.0.0 before 9.10.2-alpha.6 does not handle errors raised while sending verification or password reset emails, causing the server process to exit. A client holding only the public application keys can sign up, request a verification email, or request a password reset while the mail provider rejects, rate limits, or is unavailable, crashing the server.

Executive ViewAI
Parse Server deployments that have email verification or password-reset flows enabled can be knocked completely offline by an attacker who needs only the application's public keys - no user account or credential of any kind. A single rejected or throttled email message, a condition an attacker can force deliberately by driving requests until the mail provider rate-limits, triggers an unhandled exception that terminates the Node.js process and takes the entire service down. Leadership should care because this is a cheap, repeatable availability attack against customer-facing services, it carries elevated severity, and no vendor-released patch was identified at the time of analysis - while deployments with email features disabled are unaffected and can be secured quickly through configuration alone.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; disable email verification and password-reset flows where they are not required, rate-limit and add bot protection to those endpoints, run redundant instances behind a load balancer, and enable automatic process restart with restart alerting.
