MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that an application using ELFIO parse an attacker-controlled ELF file and invoke relocation_section_accessor::get_entry() on a SHT_REL or SHT_RELA section whose sh_link field references a missing/dangling section index, so find_hash_section() returns null. This is not remote-unauthenticated against a service: the CVSS vector is AV:L with UI:P (Passive), meaning the attacker must get the ELF file processed locally by the victim application - the realistic trigger is tooling that ingests untrusted binaries. Limiting factors: impact is availability-only (process crash/DoS), there is no memory corruption, code execution, or data exposure; exploitation depends on the host application actually calling the vulnerable relocation accessor on untrusted input, so software that only handles trusted ELF files is not realistically at risk. |
| Impact | This is a denial-of-service-only NULL pointer dereference (CWE-476) in the ELFIO C++ ELF-parsing library, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) scores 6.8 and correctly reflects a local, passive-user-interaction attack with availability-only impact - no confidentiality or integrity loss and no code execution. Publicly available exploit code exists (a hackmd write-up linked as an exploit reference) and the issue was reported by VulnCheck, but there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score was provided, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; the POC demonstrates a crash, not weaponized RCE. The practical risk is therefore moderate and bounded: real priority only for software that parses untrusted/attacker-supplied ELF files using ELFIO (e.g. binary-analysis tooling, malware scanners, reverse-engineering utilities), where a crash is an availability concern, and low priority elsewhere. This is a genuine but limited issue - a high-visibility advisory on a DoS bug, not a high-CVSS-but-overhyped critical flaw. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malformed ELF file whose SHT_REL or SHT_RELA section carries a dangling sh_link index pointing to a non-existent symbol-table section. A victim application built on ELFIO (such as a binary-analysis or scanning tool) opens the file and calls relocation_section_accessor::get_entry(), whereupon find_hash_section() returns null and the dereference crashes the process. Public proof-of-concept exploit material is already available in the linked advisory/write-up. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
A NULL pointer dereference in ELFIO through 3.12 allows a crafted ELF object file to crash any application that parses it, yielding availability-only denial of service without memory corruption, code execution, or data exposure. The defect lives in relocation_section_accessor::get_entry(), which trusts the sh_link index of a SHT_REL or SHT_RELA section; when that index dangles, find_hash_section() returns null and the subsequent dereference aborts the process. Publicly available exploit code exists, and although the CVSS 4.0 vector is PR:N (no privileges required) it is AV:L with UI:P, so the practical scenario is local tooling or an ingestion pipeline that opens attacker-supplied binaries rather than a remotely reachable service; there is no evidence of confirmed active exploitation in the wild.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch with a confirmed fixed version was identified at time of analysis, so teams should track the upstream serge1/ELFIO repository (https://github.com/serge1/ELFIO) and the referenced VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/elfio-through-3.12-null-pointer-dereference-via-relocation-section-accessor-get-entry) for a fixed release and upgrade as soon as one is tagged; because ELFIO is header-only, upgrading means replacing the vendored headers and rebuilding, which should be validated against any locally patched or forked copies. Until then, the most effective compensating control is to parse only trusted ELF files or to validate section headers before invoking the library, rejecting any SHT_REL or SHT_RELA section whose sh_link is greater than or equal to the section count or does not resolve to a symbol table; this can be done with a lightweight pre-check wrapper around the relocation accessor, at the cost of a small parse overhead and the risk of rejecting unusual but legitimate binaries. Where a pre-check is impractical, isolate ELF parsing into a separate subprocess or sandbox with CPU and memory limits so a crash terminates an expendable worker instead of the primary application, though this adds process-management complexity and latency. Applications that never call relocation accessor APIs on untrusted input are not realistically at risk and can be deprioritized. Note that the CVSS 4.0 vector assigns no privileges required (PR:N) but a local attack vector (AV:L) with passive user interaction (UI:P), so perimeter filtering is not a meaningful mitigation here.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ELFIO is a header-only C++ library for reading and writing ELF object files, widely embedded in binary-analysis tools, packers, loaders, debuggers, and CI scanning pipelines. The vulnerability is a classic CWE-476 NULL pointer dereference in the relocation accessor implemented in elfio/elfio_relocation.hpp (the CVE references line 142 of that header at upstream commit 8ae6cec5d60495822ecd57d736f66149da9b1830). ELF relocation sections of type SHT_REL and SHT_RELA use the section header sh_link field to point at the associated symbol table; the accessor resolves that index through find_hash_section(), which returns a null pointer when the index does not correspond to any section in the ELF section table. Because the return value is not validated before being dereferenced, an ELF file with a deliberately dangling sh_link in a relocation section crashes the host process. There is no heap or stack corruption involved: the failure mode is a hard fault on null access, which bounds the impact to process termination. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:serge1:elfio:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering all releases up to and including 3.12 of the serge1/ELFIO project.

DescriptionCVE.org
ELFIO through 3.12 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in relocation_section_accessor get_entry() that allows attackers to crash applications via an unvalidated sh_link index. Attackers can supply a crafted ELF file whose SHT_REL or SHT_RELA section has a dangling sh_link, causing find_hash_section() to dereference null and deny service.

A null pointer dereference occurs when a program attempts to access memory through a pointer that has been set to NULL (address 0x0).
