MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that a target application or tool use the asm-commons AdviceAdapter to process class files that an attacker can influence, and that it accept attacker-supplied or untrusted bytecode (e.g. plugin loading, dependency/bytecode scanning, instrumentation of uploaded JARs, or CI pipelines handling external artifacts). The crafted class must contain a constructor with many forward jump targets to trigger the unbounded forwardJumpStackFrames stack copies. Limiting factors per the CVSS 4.0 vector: the attack vector is local (AV:L), not network-reachable, and requires passive user interaction (UI:P) - the victim process must ingest the malicious file; impact is confined to availability (VA:L, DoS), with no confidentiality or integrity effect, and the affected version range is ASM 3.1 before 9.11. Deployments that only ever process trusted, self-generated bytecode are effectively not exposed. |
| Impact | This is a genuine-but-modest-priority issue, not a high-severity emergency. The vendor-provided CVSS 4.0 vector (4.8, Medium) is internally consistent with the description: AV:L and UI:P indicate the attacker cannot reach the flaw over a network but must get a crafted class file processed locally (passively) by an application that uses asm-commons AdviceAdapter, and VC:N/VI:N/VA:L confirms the only impact is a bounded availability loss (memory exhaustion / DoS), with no confidentiality or integrity effect. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC referenced - so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' All exploitation signals agree this is a low-to-moderate, availability-only risk rather than a high-CVSS-but-hidden-critical issue. The one signal that raises relative attention is reach: ASM is an extremely widely embedded Java bytecode library, so the flaw is present in a very large number of toolchains even though its impact per instance is limited. Note a caveat: CWE-770 (uncontrolled resource allocation) and the description support availability impact only, but the real risk depends entirely on whether a deployment feeds untrusted bytecode through AdviceAdapter - verify that against your own usage before prioritizing. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker supplies a maliciously crafted Java class file to an application or build/analysis tool that uses asm-commons AdviceAdapter to transform or instrument bytecode (for example an uploaded plugin, a dependency scanner, or a CI step processing untrusted JARs). The crafted constructor contains many forward jump targets, triggering unbounded stack-frame copies in forwardJumpStackFrames and hundreds of megabytes of allocation, exhausting heap and causing the process to crash or hang. No public exploit code is referenced; exploitation is local with passive user interaction, so the attacker must get the file processed rather than reach the library remotely. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Excessive memory allocation in the asm-commons AdviceAdapter of OW2 ASM (versions 3.1 through 9.10.x, fixed in 9.11) lets an attacker who can get crafted bytecode processed by a tool that uses AdviceAdapter drive the JVM into hundreds of megabytes of allocation and ultimately a denial of service. The flaw is triggered by class files whose constructors contain many forward jump targets, causing unbounded stack-frame copying in the forwardJumpStackFrames handling; exploitation is local (AV:L) and requires the victim process to be induced to ingest the malicious class file (UI:P/UI:R), with impact limited to availability (VA:L) and no confidentiality or integrity effect. No confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released a fix, so this is a genuine-but-modest-priority issue rather than a high-severity emergency.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to OW2 ASM 9.11 or later (vendor-released patch: 9.11, delivered via merge request https://gitlab.ow2.org/asm/asm/-/merge_requests/464 and commit https://gitlab.ow2.org/asm/asm/-/commit/b7e6c88801790c9da214efd0498aecb9402796a0; version list at https://asm.ow2.io/versions.html), and because ASM is typically a transitive dependency, update the tools and frameworks that bundle it rather than expecting the library to be patched in place. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, constrain exposure by refusing to process untrusted bytecode through AdviceAdapter-based instrumentation paths (disable plugin/JAR-loading or bytecode-scanning features that accept external artifacts, and gate CI pipelines on trusted inputs only), and bound the blast radius by running the consuming JVM with a hard heap cap (-Xmx) or a container memory limit so a crafted class triggers an OOM/restart instead of exhausting host memory-accepting the trade-off that the same limit can affect legitimate heavy workloads and that the affected process may still crash. Since the issue requires an attacker-influenced class file to be ingested, permission hygiene on upload/scan endpoints (restricting who can submit JARs and class files) is a worthwhile secondary control. There is no evidence of active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, so remediation can proceed on a normal patch cadence rather than an emergency one.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OW2 ASM is a widely embedded Java bytecode manipulation and analysis library; the asm-commons module provides higher-level utilities, including the AdviceAdapter used to insert advice (onMethodEnter/onMethodExit callbacks) around methods during instrumentation. AdviceAdapter tracks the operand-stack state for forward jumps by recording stack frames in the forwardJumpStackFrames structure, and each additional forward jump target in a method-particularly within a constructor-causes that structure to be copied and grows without a bound. The root cause maps to CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling): the adapter does not cap how much memory it will consume when reconstructing frames, so a class file with a large number of forward jumps in a constructor causes hundreds of megabytes of allocation. Because ASM ships as a dependency inside many frameworks, build tools, profilers, and bytecode scanners, the affected surface is transitive: any of those consumers that feed attacker-influenced JARs or class files into an AdviceAdapter-driven path inherits the weakness. Per the supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) and the independent assessment (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L), the attack requires local access plus the victim process ingesting the crafted file, requires no privileges or authentication (PR:N), and degrades availability only; deployments that exclusively process trusted, self-generated bytecode are not meaningfully exposed.

DescriptionCVE.org
OW2 ASM 3.1 before 9.11 contains an excessive memory allocation vulnerability in the asm-commons AdviceAdapter that allows attackers to exhaust memory by supplying crafted class files. Attackers can craft bytecode with many forward jump targets in constructors, causing unbounded stack copies in forwardJumpStackFrames and allocation of hundreds of megabytes, leading to denial of service.
