MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated account that has been granted the 'automations' permission within Open WebUI (versions 0.9.0 up to but not including 0.11.4); it is not exploitable by anonymous or unauthenticated users. The attacker must send recurrence rules (RRULE) that are syntactically parseable but unsatisfiable - the description's canonical example is a rule resolving to a nonexistent date like February 30th - to the automations create or update endpoints. Each such rule causes recurrence evaluation to block the single shared async event loop for seconds per request, so sustained impact requires repeated submission. Limiting factors: the automations permission requirement (non-anonymous, operator-granted), the availability-only impact (no data exposure or code execution), and the recoverable nature of the stall (service resumes once requests stop). |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue rather than a critical one. The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.1 is driven entirely by availability impact (VA:H) with no confidentiality or integrity consequences (VC:N/VI:N); the vector is network-reachable (AV:N) with low complexity (AC:L) and no user interaction (UI:N), but crucially requires authenticated low-privilege access (PR:L) AND the specific 'automations' permission, which meaningfully narrows the attacker population to trusted/provisioned users rather than anonymous internet attackers. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation-probability modeling cannot be incorporated - this is a data gap. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, so this is not confirmed actively exploited. The SSVC-style read is: technical impact is partial (availability-only, recoverable DoS), exploitation is not observed, and automatability is low because an authenticated permissioned account is a prerequisite. Net: a real availability risk for multi-tenant or shared Open WebUI deployments where the event loop is contended, but not an emergency drop-everything patch for single-user or trusted-team instances. The CVSS and description are internally consistent (both point to authenticated availability-only DoS), so no conflicting signals to flag here. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Open WebUI user who holds the 'automations' permission repeatedly POSTs/updates automations containing an unsatisfiable recurrence rule (e.g. one resolving to February 30th) to the automations create or update endpoints. Each submission forces synchronous recurrence evaluation that blocks the shared async event loop for several seconds, so a rapid burst of such requests stalls the instance and degrades service for all other users. No public proof-of-concept exploit has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Denial of service in Open WebUI 0.9.0 through 0.11.3 lets an authenticated user who holds the operator-granted 'automations' permission stall the whole instance by submitting recurrence rules that are syntactically valid but unsatisfiable - the canonical example being a rule that resolves to a nonexistent date such as February 30th - to the automations create or update endpoints. Each submitted rule blocks the single shared async event loop for several seconds, so repeated requests degrade or halt service for all users; impact is availability-only, with no data exposure or code execution, and the instance recovers once the requests stop. The vulnerability is scored 7.1 (CVSS 4.0 AV:N/AC:L/PR:L, and 7.1 under CVSS 3.1 with A:H) and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, though a vendor-released fix (0.11.4) is available.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Open WebUI to 0.11.4 or later; this is the vendor-released patch (fix commit 5fb869db221d9599a576e8e2eea9c3314947d25e) and closes the defect by moving RRULE validation to an async path, enforcing a RecurrenceEvaluationTimeout that returns HTTP 400, skipping timed-out automation rows during scheduling, and adding a Redis task heartbeat with the REDIS_TASK_TTL setting (default 300 seconds; values under 60 are coerced to 300, and 0 disables expiry) so orphaned tasks cannot accumulate. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls with their trade-offs: revoke the 'automations' permission from all but a small set of trusted operators (this reduces or removes the attack surface but limits legitimate automation use), disable the automations feature entirely if it is not required (feature loss for users relying on scheduled tasks), and rate-limit or restrict access to the automations/calendar create and update endpoints at a reverse proxy or API gateway (mitigates sustained abuse but can throttle legitimate event creation and requires per-user keying to be effective). Because the fix also changes calendar RRULE handling, re-validate existing calendar and automation entries after upgrading to confirm no legitimately scheduled jobs are rejected. Full details are in GHSA-5w58-mwmh-vf2m and the referenced VulnCheck advisory.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is an uncontrolled resource consumption flaw (CWE-400) rooted in Open WebUI's recurrence-rule (RRULE) handling for calendar events and automations. RRULE strings are parsed and evaluated with a date-recurrence library; some parseable rules - including ones demanding dates that never occur, like February 30th - can be expanded into exceptionally expensive or non-terminating evaluation work. In the affected versions this evaluation is performed inside the FastAPI application's single shared asyncio event loop, and calendar/automation validation was implemented with synchronous Pydantic field validators, so a request that triggers heavy recurrence evaluation blocks the entire loop rather than just its own coroutine. The upstream fix (commit 5fb869db221d9599a576e8e2eea9c3314947d25e) moves calendar RRULE checking into an async validate_calendar_rrule() helper, introduces a dedicated RecurrenceEvaluationTimeout exception mapped to an HTTP 400 response, makes the claim_due() automation scheduler skip rows whose recurrence evaluation times out, and adds a Redis task-heartbeat mechanism with a REDIS_TASK_TTL environment setting (default 300 seconds, with values below 60 coerced back to 300, and 0 disabling expiry) so stalled tasks expire instead of being retried indefinitely. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:open-webui:open-webui:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.

DescriptionCVE.org
Open WebUI from 0.9.0 before 0.11.4 contains a denial of service vulnerability that allows authenticated users with automations permission to stall the instance by submitting unsatisfiable recurrence rules. Attackers can repeatedly send rules like February 30th to the automations create or update endpoints, blocking the shared event loop for seconds per request.
Executive ViewAI
Open WebUI versions 0.9.0 through 0.11.3 contain an availability flaw that lets an authenticated user with the operator-granted 'automations' permission stall the entire shared instance for all users using a small number of crafted requests. Because the platform runs on a single shared async event loop, abuse affects every user of the instance rather than just the submitter, causing organization-wide workflow disruption. Leadership should care because service can be degraded or halted repeatedly during business hours, although no data exposure or code execution is involved and the instance recovers once the offending requests stop.
