1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated Open WebUI account (PR:L) with access to the knowledge-base or chat file-search tooling - specifically the ability to have the model call grep_knowledge_files or grep_chat_files. The limiting factor is authentication: anonymous/unauthenticated users cannot trigger it, and the tool must be reachable (knowledge or chat file search enabled). No user interaction beyond the attacker's own request is needed (UI:N), and default configurations of the vulnerable 0.11.0-0.11.3 versions are affected because the flaw is in the default regex compilation path, not an optional feature. Impact is limited to availability (service/worker DoS) with no data exposure.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-severity availability issue, not a high-impact priority. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) scores 7.1 and is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring low-level privileges (PR:L = an authenticated account) and producing only an availability impact (VA:H) with no confidentiality or integrity loss. This is a classic CWE-400 uncontrolled resource consumption / ReDoS-style compile-time blowup. Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis - there is no CISA KEV listing, no EPSS score, and no POC referenced in the input, only a vendor advisory (GHSA-gww9-mhgj-pfqh) and the fixing commit. The source-code evidence strongly corroborates the mechanism: the fix replaces the backtracking regex engine with Google RE2 (linear-time, bounded compilation via max_mem = 1 MiB) and removes the prior fragile counted-quantifier validator, confirming the root cause is unbounded nested counted-repetition expansion at compile time. The practical risk is bounded by the authentication requirement - only users who already have an account and access to the knowledge/chat file-search tools can trigger it - so impact is limited to self-inflicted or malicious-insider denial of service against a shared instance. No conflicting signals between the vector and description were found.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated Open WebUI user (or a model acting on their behalf) issues a chat request that invokes the grep_knowledge_files or grep_chat_files tool with a short regex containing deeply nested counted repetition. Compiling that pattern with the old backtracking engine expands unbounded, blocking the asyncio event loop and exhausting the worker's memory, degrading or crashing service for all users on that instance. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, and low attack complexity (AC:L) means a single crafted pattern suffices.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Authenticated users of Open WebUI 0.11.0 through 0.11.3 can crash or stall the backend by submitting short nested-repetition regex patterns to the built-in knowledge and chat file search tools (grep_knowledge_files, grep_chat_files), which compile the attacker-controlled pattern with a backtracking regex engine whose nested counted repetition expands without bound at compile time and is then cached. The result is a blocked event loop and exhausted worker memory - a pure availability impact (CVSS 4.0 7.1, AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VA:H, CWE-400) with no confidentiality or integrity loss; the flaw sits in the default regex compilation path, so default installs of the affected versions are exposed rather than only a non-default feature. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has shipped a fix in Open WebUI 0.11.4 that replaces the engine with RE2.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Open WebUI 0.11.4 or later, which is the vendor-released fix; the change is carried by upstream commit 97e013a66169c4fcd7f26ab9e41a4ff260ffd4da and documented in advisory GHSA-gww9-mhgj-pfqh. That release replaces the backtracking regex module with google-re2 (1.1.20251105) in the requirements files, caps compiled programs and the engine cache at 1 MiB, and enforces a 4096-character search-pattern limit, so post-upgrade you should expect a behavioral change: user-supplied patterns containing lookarounds or backreferences will be rejected as unsupported RE2 syntax and shorthand character classes will be ASCII-only - communicate this to users who maintain saved grep patterns. If you cannot upgrade immediately, note that no application-level pattern sanitizer reliably bounds this class of bug (the pre-0.11.4 quantifier heuristic and per-search timeout did not), so the practical compensating controls are access-oriented: restrict the knowledge file search and chat file search tools to trusted roles or disable the built-in grep tooling for low-privilege accounts, which removes the attack primitive at the cost of losing that functionality for those users; on the deployment side, run the backend under a strict per-worker memory limit with automatic restart and place it behind a reverse proxy, accepting that a single request can still stall the affected worker process before the restart takes effect. Because exploitation requires only an authenticated account and no user interaction, prioritize the upgrade on any multi-tenant or publicly reachable Open WebUI instance.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) realized as a compile-time regular-expression blowup, a variant of ReDoS that fires before matching even begins. Open WebUI's file-search tooling passed user-supplied grep patterns into Python's third-party regex module, a backtracking engine that expands counted repetition during compilation; deeply nested quantified groups (for example a group containing a bounded repetition that is itself repeated) multiply into an enormous compiled program, and because compilation is synchronous inside an async request handler it blocks the event loop while also consuming worker heap. The vulnerable code previously attempted to bound this with a conservative pre-check (MAX_REGEX_QUANTIFIER_COUNT of 2000 and an expansion product cap of 100000) plus a per-search timeout, but the advisory's fix notes that backtracking cost is exponential in matched text length, so capping the pattern or line does not bound it - the underlying engine was the wrong primitive. The upstream commit 97e013a66169c4fcd7f26ab9e41a4ff260ffd4da (advisory GHSA-gww9-mhgj-pfqh) removes the quantifier heuristic and switches backend/open_webui/tools/knowledge_fs.py to google-re2==1.1.20251105, sets re2.Options.max_mem to 1 MiB to bound both the compiled program and the engine's matching cache, applies a hard 4096-character pattern length limit (MAX_SEARCH_PATTERN_LENGTH), and converts the old per-search timeout into a total per-call time budget checked between RE2's linear-time searches. The trade-off is syntactic: RE2 does not support lookarounds or backreferences and treats shorthand character classes as ASCII-only, which is surfaced to the model-facing tool descriptions for grep_chat_files, grep_knowledge_files, and kb_exec.

DescriptionCVE.org

Open WebUI 0.11.0 before 0.11.4 compiles user-chosen grep patterns for its knowledge and chat file search tools with a regex engine that expands nested counted repetition unbounded at compile time and caches the result. Authenticated users can have the model call grep_knowledge_files with short nested-repetition patterns, blocking the event loop and exhausting worker memory.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Open WebUI versions 0.11.0 through 0.11.3 are susceptible to a service disruption that can crash or stall the backend, affecting authenticated users of the built-in knowledge and chat file search features. This availability issue impacts default installations and could interrupt team workflows, though it does not compromise data confidentiality or integrity. Leadership should prioritize upgrading to version 0.11.4 to restore reliable service and prevent potential operational delays.
