MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a valid authenticated Open WebUI account (PR:L) with the ability to send chat messages containing an image URL field. The attacker must point the image field at a host under their control (or any host) that returns a gzip-encoded HTTP response, which get_image_base64_from_url decompresses without size limits. Exploitation is limited by the authentication requirement and by the need for the target instance to process the attacker-supplied remote image URL; impact is confined to availability (memory exhaustion / DoS), with no data exposure or modification. Affected versions are 0.6.42 up to but not including 0.11.4. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity, single-impact denial-of-service issue, not a critical priority. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H) scores 7.1 and is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, but requiring low-level authentication (PR:L) and affecting availability only (VA:H) with no confidentiality or integrity impact. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no public exploit code is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The flaw was reported by VulnCheck with a published GitHub Security Advisory (GHSA-w8j8-jv6j-3m47), lending credibility to the technical details. Real-world risk is tempered by the authentication requirement - an attacker needs a valid account - and by the impact ceiling being availability only. There is no signal conflict in the provided data; the main gap is the absence of EPSS/KEV/POC signals, meaning likelihood of exploitation is unmeasured rather than confirmed low. Priority should be routine-to-elevated patching for internet-exposed or multi-tenant Open WebUI deployments where the authenticated-user population is large or untrusted. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Open WebUI user sends a chat message containing an image field pointing to a server they control that returns a small gzip-compressed payload expanding to gigabytes. The get_image_base64_from_url function decompresses the response without bounds, consuming all server memory and denying service to every other user on the instance. No public proof-of-concept is referenced, but the attack requires only a valid account and a crafted HTTP response. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Memory exhaustion in Open WebUI 0.6.42 through 0.11.3 allows an authenticated user to take the entire instance offline for all users by submitting a chat message whose image field points to an attacker-controlled host that returns a gzip-encoded HTTP response. Because get_image_base64_from_url decompresses remote image responses without any size limit, a small compressed payload expands into an arbitrary amount of heap memory and drives the server into an out-of-memory denial of service. Exploitation requires a valid account and the ability to post chat messages (PR:L per the CVSS vector), and the independent assessment rates the impact as availability-only (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), moderate severity rather than critical; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Open WebUI 0.11.4 or later - the vendor-released patch (Vendor-released patch: 0.11.4), documented in the GitHub security advisory GHSA-w8j8-jv6j-3m47, is the definitive fix and should be treated as mandatory for any instance reachable by untrusted or low-trust authenticated users. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls that break the decompression path: disable or restrict server-side fetching of remote images (many deployments can turn off remote image ingestion or enforce a domain allowlist so that the image field only accepts internally hosted or already-proxied assets), accepting the trade-off that users lose the ability to paste arbitrary external image links; alternatively, introduce a reverse-proxy or application-layer cap on response size and reject gzip Content-Encoding from remote image hosts, though this requires custom logic and may still be bypassed by unchunked large payloads. Constrain the blast radius by running the Open WebUI container or process with a hard memory limit (for example cgroup/container memory quotas plus a restart policy) so that a single malicious message cannot consume host memory and starve co-located services, while accepting that the instance will still restart or be killed under attack. Additional hardening includes limiting who can create accounts and submit chat messages, rate-limiting the chat submission endpoint, and monitoring for sudden RSS growth correlated with image-bearing requests; the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/open-webui-0.6.42-before-0.11.4-memory-exhaustion-via-compressed-remote-image can be used as a secondary reference for detection and version verification.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Open WebUI is a self-hosted, browser-based interface for interacting with local and remote large language models, and its chat pipeline accepts an image field in message payloads so that pictures can be embedded in a conversation. To support remote images, the application fetches the supplied URL server-side and converts the response to base64 via the get_image_base64_from_url helper. That helper honors the HTTP Content-Encoding header and decompresses gzip-encoded bodies, but performs no bounds check or decompressed-size ceiling before buffering the result - the classic decompression-amplification pattern in CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption). An attacker therefore only needs a small, highly compressible gzip response (for example a long run of repeated bytes) to force the Node/Python process to allocate vastly more memory than the request itself carries. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:open-webui:open-webui:* confirms the package itself is the affected component, with the vulnerable window being 0.6.42 up to but not including 0.11.4. There is no confidentiality or integrity component: no code executes, no data is read or altered, and the sole effect is process-level memory pressure leading to unavailability of the web service for every tenant on the instance. Note that the published CVSS 4.0 score of 7.1 reflects the high availability impact; the independent reassessment under CVSS 3.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) lands in the same moderate-severity, availability-only range and does not indicate a broader compromise.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Open WebUI from 0.6.42 before 0.11.4 contains an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability that allows authenticated users to exhaust server memory by supplying compressed remote image URLs in chat messages. Attackers can point the image field at a host returning gzip-encoded responses, which get_image_base64_from_url decompresses unbounded, causing denial of service for all users.
Executive ViewAI
Open WebUI versions 0.6.42 through 0.11.3 are affected by a memory-exhaustion denial-of-service that allows any authenticated user to take the entire instance offline for all users via a crafted chat message. Organizations using Open WebUI for internal or customer-facing AI assistance face a credible availability risk from low-privilege insiders or compromised user accounts, disrupting productivity and service delivery without exposing sensitive data.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations include restricting Open WebUI's outbound network egress to trusted hosts, capping HTTP response and decompressed body sizes at an egress proxy, limiting chat-posting privileges to trusted accounts, and monitoring for memory exhaustion or OOM events on the Open WebUI server.
