MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that cupsd be reachable by the attacker and that a target queue be enabled, accepting jobs, and support the submitted document format; the attacker must be able to send a Print-Job IPP request carrying repeated IPP group tags. Anonymous (unauthenticated) submission is only possible when the listener and access-control configuration explicitly permit it - otherwise valid credentials/authorization to submit jobs are needed, which is the primary limiting factor. Default CUPS deployments frequently bind only to the local loopback interface, which restricts reachability to local users unless remote listening and sharing have been enabled, further limiting realistic remote exposure. |
| Impact | This is a low-severity denial-of-service issue and does not represent an urgent priority for most environments. The provided CVSS base score is 3.3 (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L), reflecting no confidentiality or integrity impact and only limited availability loss. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, no CISA KEV listing, and no EPSS score was supplied in the input, so there is no signal of active or probable exploitation. One signal conflict must be stated explicitly: the input CVSS vector is AV:L (local) with PR:L, yet the description repeatedly frames the attack in network terms - 'when the client can reach the scheduler' and 'anonymous submission is possible when permitted by listener and access-control configuration' - which implies that a network-reachable, permissively configured cupsd could be hit remotely and even unauthenticated. The AV:L/PR:L scoring is therefore likely conservative and may understate exposure for internet- or LAN-reachable instances; verify the intended attack vector against the GHSA advisory. Even so, the impact is a recoverable service crash (cupsd terminates, interrupting all print queues until restart) rather than code execution or data exposure, so real-world risk is modest and bounded to printing availability. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can submit print jobs to a reachable, enabled, accepting CUPS queue sends a single crafted IPP Print-Job request containing repeated IPP group tags. During job startup cupsd dereferences a NULL attribute name and crashes, taking down all print queues on the host until the service is restarted. No public proof-of-concept exploit was identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires the ability to reach and submit to the scheduler. |

Denial of service in OpenPrinting CUPS before 2.4.20 lets a crafted Print-Job IPP request terminate the cupsd scheduler, taking every queue it serves offline with it. Repeated IPP group tags cause the parser to create unnamed separator attributes (IPP_TAG_ZERO) that add_job() re-tags as IPP_TAG_JOB; when the job starts, get_options()/ipp_length() calls strlen() on the NULL attribute name and crashes the daemon (CWE-476). The vendor scores this 3.3 on a local vector, while our assessment rates it CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, since an attacker who can reach the scheduler and submit to an enabled, accepting queue supporting the submitted document format can cause it; PR:L in the assessed vector indicates authenticated access is normally required, with anonymous submission possible only where listener and access-control configuration explicitly allow it. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV); this is a low-severity availability issue rather than an urgent priority for most environments.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to OpenPrinting CUPS 2.4.20 or later, which is the version that resolves the NULL pointer dereference per the vendor advisory at https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups/security/advisories/GHSA-wjc4-qhjr-5m5x; the primary fix is the patched scheduler, so pulling the updated package from your distribution vendor should be treated as the complete remedy. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce the attack surface by binding cupsd to the loopback interface and disabling remote sharing (the Listen and Browsing directives in cupsd.conf, or the equivalent sharing toggle in the web UI) so only local users can reach the scheduler - the trade-off is that legitimate network printing stops working. Enforce authentication and authorization for job submission (Require user directives, AuthType configuration, and restricting the <Location /> blocks) rather than permitting anonymous Print-Job requests; this does not help against a local authenticated user or a misconfigured anonymous listener, and it may break automated print clients that rely on fallback anonymous submission. Additionally, disable unneeded document formats and filters so fewer job types can reach the vulnerable startup path, and confine cupsd with systemd sandboxing, AppArmor, or SELinux profiles to limit the blast radius of a daemon crash. Note that restarting cupsd restores availability only until another crafted request arrives, so restart-based recovery is not a mitigation; the upgrade remains the only durable fix. The issue is not confirmed actively exploited (CISA KEV) and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so patch scheduling can follow normal maintenance windows in low-exposure environments.

Technical ContextAI · show details
CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) is the standard print spooler for Linux and other Unix-like platforms, with cupsd as the scheduler that receives IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) traffic - normally on TCP 631 when remote listening is enabled, otherwise only through the local domain socket. IPP encodes attributes into ordered groups delimited by group tags such as operation attributes and job attributes, with an end-of-attributes tag closing the message. In this defect, an IPP job-creation request containing repeated group tags causes the protocol parser to synthesize unnamed separator attributes tagged IPP_TAG_ZERO for each redundant group boundary. The scheduler's add_job() routine converts these separators into IPP_TAG_JOB entries that carry no name string, and later, during job startup, get_options()/ipp_length() walks the option list and applies strlen() to each attribute name, dereferencing the NULL name. That is a classic CWE-476 NULL pointer dereference, and because it occurs in the main scheduler process, the fault takes down cupsd and disrupts all queues rather than only the targeted job. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:openprinting:cups:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers every release prior to the fixed 2.4.20 build; the assessed impact is availability-only (C:N/I:N/A:H), with no data confidentiality or integrity effect and no indication of memory corruption beyond the described dereference. OpenPrinting CUPS before 2.4.20 contains a NULL pointer dereference caused by repeated IPP group tags in job-creation requests. IPP parsing creates unnamed separator attributes with IPP_TAG_ZERO, but add_job() converts these separators to IPP_TAG_JOB. During job startup, get_options()/ipp_length() subsequently calls strlen() on a NULL attribute name, terminating cupsd and disrupting all queues. A single crafted Print-Job request can trigger the crash when the client can reach the scheduler and submit jobs to an accepting, enabled queue supporting the submitted document format. Anonymous submission is possible when permitted by listener and access-control configuration.
