Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target hMailServer 6.3.4 or 6.3.5 deployment actually uses the REST API's federated or passwordless sign-in features - specifically OpenID Connect, SAML single sign-on, or passkey (WebAuthn) authentication - since the attack targets the pending-sign-in and passkey-challenge tables for those flows. The initiating routes are reachable without authentication (PR:N), so no credentials are needed, but the attacker must sustain a high request rate (about a hundred per second for passkeys) for the entire duration of the denial, and impact ceases when the flood stops. Deployments that do not enable OIDC/SAML/passkey sign-in, or that place the REST API behind rate-limiting or network restrictions, are not meaningfully affected; impact is limited to login availability and does not extend to confidentiality, integrity, or mail delivery.

Impact

This is a low-to-moderate priority availability issue, not a critical flaw. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, score 5.3 MEDIUM) is internally consistent with the description: the single-sign-on initiation and passkey-challenge routes of the REST API are reachable remotely without authentication, with low attack complexity and no user interaction, and the impact is confined to availability (C:N/I:N) at the LOW level because it degrades a specific authentication path rather than crashing the server. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so by the precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - exploitation is plausible and technically simple (a sustained request flood of roughly a hundred requests per second for passkeys) but there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation in the wild. The practical risk is bounded: the attack only denies OpenID Connect, SAML, and passkey sign-ins while the flood continues, is trivially detectable as an abnormal request rate, stops when the traffic stops, and does not compromise data or achieve code execution. Net assessment: a real but self-limiting denial-of-service against SSO/passkey login, worth patching on normal cadence rather than as an emergency, and only relevant to deployments that actually use these federated/passkey sign-in methods.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can reach the hMailServer REST API repeatedly calls the unauthenticated endpoints that start an SSO flow or request a passkey challenge, at roughly a hundred requests per second for passkeys. Because the bounded pending-sign-in tables evict their oldest entry when full regardless of owner, legitimate users' pending sign-in state is pushed out before their browser completes the round trip, so their OIDC, SAML, and passkey logins fail for as long as the flood lasts. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the attack requires only a simple HTTP request loop.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Unauthenticated remote attackers can deny OpenID Connect, SAML and passkey sign-in for all users of hMailServer 6.3.4 and 6.3.5 by flooding the REST API's sign-in initiation routes, which store pending state in bounded tables that evict the oldest entry when full. Because those routes are reachable without authentication (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, score 5.3), an attacker sending requests a few times per second - roughly one hundred per second in the passkey case - can push every other user's pending sign-in out of the table before that user's browser returns, breaking single sign-on and passwordless login for as long as the flood continues. Impact is limited to login availability: confidentiality, integrity and mail delivery are unaffected, no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires that the deployment actually has OIDC, SAML or passkey authentication enabled.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to hMailServer 6.3.6, available from https://gitlab.com/hmailserver/hmailserver/-/releases/v6.3.6, which is the first release that no longer drops pending sign-in state under flooding. Until the upgrade can be scheduled, the most effective compensating control is to rate-limit or throttle the REST API routes that initiate SSO and passkey challenges - for example at a reverse proxy - accepting the trade-off that aggressive limits may slow legitimate sign-in bursts and that per-IP limits are weaker against distributed sources. If OpenID Connect, SAML and passkey authentication are not actually in use, disable those sign-in methods in the REST API configuration so the vulnerable tables are never populated; the trade-off is loss of federated and passwordless login. Alternatively, restrict the REST API to trusted networks or block it from the internet (firewall or reverse-proxy allowlists), with the trade-off that legitimate off-network clients, mobile users and integrations lose access. Note that no vendor advisory beyond the 6.3.6 release and the GitLab work item was referenced, so verify the fix version against the vendor release notes before relying on it.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) applied to the pending-sign-in bookkeeping of hMailServer's REST API. The REST API exposes routes that begin an OpenID Connect or SAML single sign-on flow and routes that issue a passkey (WebAuthn) sign-in challenge; each of these writes a short-lived pending state record into a bounded table so the returning browser can complete the handshake. When the table is full, the implementation evicts its oldest entry - regardless of which user owns it - rather than rejecting or throttling the new request. This is an uncontrolled eviction pattern: the attacker's own requests, which are cheaper to generate than the victim's full browser round trip, displace legitimate pending entries, so the victim's callback finds no matching state and the sign-in fails. The attack surface is unauthenticated by design (PR:N), requires low complexity (AC:L), needs no victim interaction (UI:N) and produces only partial availability loss (A:L), which is why the vector is scored 5.3 rather than critical. Impact is bounded by the attacker's request rate and ends the moment the flood stops, since nothing is corrupted or deleted - entries are simply displaced.

DescriptionCVE.org

Uncontrolled eviction in the pending sign-in tables of the REST API in Progressive Robot hMailServer 6.3.4 and 6.3.5 allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to make other users' OpenID Connect, SAML and passkey sign-ins fail. The routes that start a single sign-on and hand out a passkey sign-in challenge are reached without authentication and stored pending state in bounded tables that dropped their oldest entry when full, whoever had started it. An attacker who starts sign-ins a few times a second (about a hundred a second for passkeys) pushes every other user's pending sign-in out of the table before that user's browser returns, denying single sign-on and passkey sign-in for as long as the requests continue.
