MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target application pass attacker-influenced image data (e.g. user-uploaded files or externally fetched images) through a vulnerable ImageMagick version (before 7.1.2-30 / 6.9.13-55) in a code path that parses embedded XMP profiles - i.e. any normal image-decoding or metadata-handling operation. No authentication, user interaction, or non-default configuration is needed on ImageMagick's side (PR:N/UI:N). The key limiting factor is impact scope: the flaw only terminates the single image-processing process/worker (A:L, S:U), causing no data disclosure, no corruption, and no code execution, so realistic damage is confined to availability of the affected processing task or service. |
| Impact | This is a limited-impact denial-of-service issue, not a high-priority emergency. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, base 5.3 Medium) indicates a remotely reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated trigger, but with NO confidentiality or integrity impact and only LOW availability impact - consistent with the description, where a crafted XMP profile hits a recursion limit that was wrongly treated as a fatal condition, terminating only the image-processing process rather than crashing a whole host or enabling code execution. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided in the input, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation; absence of these is not evidence of safety but does argue against urgent prioritization. No SSVC decision data was supplied. The source-code evidence (replacing ThrowFatalException with a NULL return in DestroyXMLTree_) confirms the root cause and the fix, strengthening confidence that this is genuinely a crash/abort bug, not a memory-corruption primitive. Net: a real but low-severity availability bug worth patching in image-upload pipelines, not a drop-everything priority. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker uploads or submits an image file containing a maliciously crafted XMP metadata profile with deeply nested structure to a web service or pipeline that uses a vulnerable ImageMagick version to process uploads. When ImageMagick parses the XMP, it hits the internal recursion limit, which is raised as a fatal exception and terminates the processing worker, denying service for that request (and potentially repeatedly). No public exploit code was identified in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Denial-of-service in ImageMagick versions before 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55 allows remote unauthenticated attackers to terminate an image-processing process by supplying a crafted image containing a deeply recursive XMP profile. The flaw only affects availability of the single ImageMagick task or worker-CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L-because the recursion limit is treated as a fatal error rather than a recoverable exception; there is no disclosure, corruption, or code execution. At time of analysis, no public exploit code or active exploitation was identified.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade ImageMagick to 7.1.2-30 or 6.9.13-55, as documented in GHSA-27m9-54jx-fgvq and the linked commits and releases (https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/security/advisories/GHSA-27m9-54jx-fgvq, https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick/releases/tag/7.1.2-30, and https://github.com/ImageMagick/ImageMagick6/releases/tag/6.9.13-55). If immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure by stripping or rejecting XMP metadata at the application boundary before passing untrusted images to ImageMagick, and by running image decoding in an isolated, unprivileged worker or container with CPU, memory, and process-restart controls so that a fatal termination affects only that worker; these compensating controls may break workflows that depend on XMP metadata and do not remove the underlying recursion bug.

Technical ContextAI · show details
This is an uncontrolled resource consumption issue (CWE-400) in ImageMagick's XMP profile parsing. XMP is embedded XML metadata in images, and ImageMagick builds an XML tree from a profile; a crafted profile can reach a recursion limit. In MagickCore/xml-tree.c for the 7.x line and magick/xml-tree.c for the 6.x line, the vulnerable DestroyXMLTree_ logic called ThrowFatalException(ResourceLimitFatalError, 'MemoryAllocationFailed'), which aborts the process instead of allowing normal exception handling to proceed. The upstream fixes replace that fatal throw with return((XMLTreeInfo *) NULL), so the failure is handled as an ordinary exception. The generic CPE cpe:2.3:a:imagemagick:imagemagick:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that ImageMagick product versions are in scope and must be constrained by deployment version checks.

AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L
A crafted image is typically supplied over the network with no auth or interaction (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N/AC:L); only the processing process aborts, so impact is A:L with C/I:N and S:U.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55, a crafted XMP profile can reach a recursion limit that is handled as a fatal condition instead of an ordinary exception, terminating the image-processing process. This issue is fixed in versions 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55.
