MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to have ALREADY compromised Chrome's renderer process through a separate vulnerability - this is a second-stage bypass, not an initial access vector. The victim must then load attacker-controlled crafted HTML (UI:R), and the installed Chrome must be older than 155.0.8059.39 on desktop. Limiting factors: the hard dependency on a pre-existing renderer compromise substantially raises the bar, the impact is confined to bypassing system access restrictions (integrity) with no direct data disclosure or denial of service, and no public exploit is known, so realistic risk is lower than the 6.5 base score alone suggests. |
| Impact | This is a medium-severity Chrome flaw whose signals are consistent and point to moderate, not urgent, real-world risk. The CVSS 3.1 vector (6.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/C:N/I:H/A:N) emphasizes integrity impact (system access restriction bypass) with no confidentiality or availability loss, and critically the NVD vector's PR:N conflicts with the description, which states the attacker must have ALREADY compromised the renderer process - meaning this is not a standalone primitive but a second-stage sandbox-escape/privilege-boundary bypass that presupposes a prior renderer exploit. Treat the PR:N scoring as reflecting Chrome's standard threat model (renderer compromise assumed), not a truly pre-authentication remote flaw. EPSS is low at 0.18% (7th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified, so there is no evidence of active or imminent mass exploitation. These low-exploitation signals align well with the Medium Chromium severity rating and the fact that a working renderer compromise is a non-trivial prerequisite. Net: real but routine - patch on normal Chrome cadence; it becomes meaningful only as a link in a chained exploit, not as a first-access vector. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has already achieved code execution inside Chrome's sandboxed renderer (via a separate bug) lures or keeps the victim on a crafted HTML page; the page abuses the Network component's incorrect authorization to bypass system access restrictions and reach resources the renderer sandbox should block, advancing a chained sandbox-escape. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the attack depends on first holding a compromised renderer. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Incorrect authorization in Google Chrome's Network component lets a remote attacker who has already compromised the renderer process bypass system access restrictions by having the victim load a crafted HTML page, with all desktop builds prior to 155.0.8059.39 affected. The flaw is reachable without authentication (AV:N/PR:N) but requires user interaction (UI:R) and, critically, a pre-existing renderer compromise, which is why our assessment raises attack complexity to AC:H and treats this as a second-stage bypass rather than an initial-access vector. Impact is confined to integrity (C:N/I:H/A:N) with no direct data disclosure or denial of service; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, Chrome is not on CISA KEV, and EPSS is only 0.18% (7th percentile), so real-world risk is moderate rather than urgent despite the 6.5 vendor base score.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 155.0.8059.39 - upgrade Google Chrome on all desktops to 155.0.8059.39 or later via chrome://settings/help or through enterprise package management, and verify the reported version after restart since Chrome only applies the update on relaunch. The fix is documented in the Chrome stable channel advisory (https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2026/10/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_086471744.html) with the underlying engineering record at https://issues.chromium.org/issues/537832408. Because exploitation requires an attacker to already hold a compromised renderer, the most effective compensating control is reducing the chance of that first-stage compromise: keep Chrome fully current for renderer/V8 defects, keep Strict Site Isolation and the Network Service sandbox enabled, enforce enterprise URL allowlists and download restrictions for high-risk users, and block untrusted or unsigned extensions. Note the trade-offs - disabling the network service or relaxing site isolation degrades the very boundary this bug abuses and should not be used as a mitigation, and network-level filtering does not help here because the trigger is attacker-controlled HTML rendered in the browser rather than a remote service. No patch is available for unmanaged Chromium forks until they rebase onto the fixed upstream release.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Chrome runs a multi-process architecture in which web content is parsed inside a sandboxed renderer, while privileged operations are brokered by the browser process and by the standalone Network Service utility process over Mojo IPC. CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) indicates that an authorization or permission check guarding a privileged interface was missing, wrong, or evaluated against the wrong principal, so a message that should have been rejected was instead honored. In this case the Network component exposed a capability reachable from a renderer-context request; because the renderer is untrusted by design, the boundary between renderer and the network/browser services is exactly where such checks must be enforced. A crafted HTML page is the delivery mechanism that steers the (already compromised) renderer into issuing the malformed or unauthorized request, resulting in a bypass of system access restrictions. The vulnerable CPE, cpe:2.3:a:google:chrome:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, carries no version binding, confirming that the defect is version-scoped to the pre-fix Chrome codebase rather than to a specific OS or build variant.

AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N
Raised AC to H because exploitation depends on first achieving a separate renderer compromise; kept UI:R for loading the crafted page and I:H for the access-restriction bypass with no C/A impact.
