2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires (1) Payload configured with LOCAL filesystem upload storage (a collection with upload.staticDir on local disk, not a remote/cloud storage adapter), and (2) an authenticated account holding update or delete permission on that upload-enabled collection. The attacker supplies a crafted stored filename - a relative traversal path, a generated size filename (e.g. sizes.thumbnail.filename), or a path reaching through a symlink - that resolves outside the configured upload directory during file cleanup. Limiting factors: authentication plus upload-management authorization are mandatory (PR:L), so this is not remotely exploitable by anonymous users; deployments that use cloud/object storage adapters, or that restrict upload management to trusted operators, are not or only marginally exposed.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditionally-gated integrity/availability flaw rather than a drive-by critical. The provided CVSS:3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H → 8.1 High) tells a consistent story with the description: network-reachable via Payload's API, low complexity, but requiring an authenticated account (PR:L) that holds upload update/delete permissions. Note C:N - this is NOT an information-disclosure bug; the impact is file deletion outside the upload directory, i.e. data loss (I:H) and service disruption (A:H). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so the raw 8.1 overstates real-world urgency for most deployments: exploitation presupposes an attacker already has a privileged upload-management account, and the description explicitly notes 'deployments that restrict upload management to trusted users are less exposed.' The fix commit (adding an isPathWithin containment check) and its test suite are confirmed, but no exploitation-probability or in-the-wild signal is present. Net: prioritize patching for multi-tenant or public-signup Payload instances using local file storage, where low-trust users can hold upload rights; single-operator or cloud-storage deployments are substantially lower risk. No conflicting signals detected, but absence of EPSS/KEV means urgency is inferred, not measured.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

On a Payload CMS instance using local (filesystem) upload storage, an authenticated user with permission to update or delete uploads submits a document whose stored filename (or a generated image-size filename) contains path-traversal sequences or references a symlinked path. When Payload runs its file-cleanup routine on update/delete, it resolves and deletes a target outside the configured upload directory, destroying arbitrary server files and disrupting service. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, though the fix commit and test cases publicly illustrate the vulnerable behavior.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026

Authenticated arbitrary file deletion in Payload CMS before version 3.90.0 (and canary releases before 4.0.0-canary.34) lets a user who can update or delete uploads stored on the local filesystem cause the file-cleanup routine to remove files outside the configured upload directory, resulting in data loss or service disruption. The flaw is a path traversal in the upload deletion logic that requires a valid account holding update/delete permission on an upload-enabled collection (CVSS 3.1: AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H, score 8.1), so it is not exploitable by anonymous visitors. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the issue is not reported as actively exploited; deployments using cloud/object storage adapters or restricting upload management to trusted operators are largely unaffected. Vendor-released patches are available in 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to the vendor-released patched versions: Payload CMS 3.90.0 for the 3.x line, or 4.0.0-canary.34 (or later) for canary installations; the fix is also visible in upstream commit 6b74418f628fa633c2f297e5919a9f91b383dc11, and details are documented in advisory GHSA-p223-2wr2-j562 and release tag v3.90.0. No vendor-released patch exists for earlier versions, so upgrading is the primary remediation. If immediate upgrading is not possible, apply compensating controls with their trade-offs in mind: restrict the upload-enabled collections' update and delete permissions to a small set of trusted, vetted operators so the PR:L prerequisite cannot be met by untrusted accounts (this reduces but does not eliminate exposure if such an operator is compromised); migrate uploads to a remote/cloud storage adapter so the local filesystem deletion path is never exercised (this requires reconfiguring storage and re-uploading or migrating existing assets); and run the Payload process under an OS user whose write/delete access is scoped to the intended upload directory only, so traversal to sibling or system files fails at the filesystem permission layer (this can break legitimate workflows that rely on broader file access). Additionally, scrutinize stored filename metadata for traversal sequences or symlink-mediated paths in existing upload records, and ensure the upload directory contains no symlinks pointing outside it, since the pre-fix code also followed linked directories during cleanup.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is a path traversal (CWE-22) in Payload's upload cleanup code, specifically packages/payload/src/uploads/deleteAssociatedFiles.ts. When an upload document is deleted, Payload derives a file path from the stored filename (and from generated size variants such as sizes.thumbnail.filename) and joins it to the collection's configured upload.staticDir before removing it. Before the fix, the resolved path was not verified to remain inside staticDir, so a crafted stored filename containing relative traversal segments (e.g. '../'), or a path that reaches an external target through a symlinked directory inside the upload tree, could resolve to arbitrary locations on disk and be deleted. The patch adds an isPathWithin helper that computes path.relative(resolvedStaticPath, filePath) and rejects any result that is absolute, equals '..', or begins with '..' plus the platform separator, throwing on invalid filenames. The accompanying regression tests confirm behavior for normal files, nested files inside the upload directory, traversal filenames, traversal in generated size filenames, and symlink-mediated escapes. The vulnerability only manifests for collections that use local filesystem storage (upload.staticDir pointing at local disk) rather than remote/cloud storage adapters, and it requires an authenticated principal with upload update or delete rights.

DescriptionCVE.org

Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. In versions before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34, an authenticated user who can update or delete uploads stored locally can cause file cleanup to remove unintended files outside the configured upload directory, resulting in data loss or service disruption. Deployments that restrict upload management to trusted users are less exposed. This issue is fixed in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Payload CMS deployments running versions before 3.90.0 or 4.0.0-canary.34 face a high-severity flaw that lets an authenticated user with upload management permissions delete files outside the intended upload directory, potentially causing data loss or service disruption. Leadership should care because affected teams may lose critical uploaded content or suffer availability issues, though the risk is limited to trusted accounts and no public exploit code has been identified. A vendor patch is available, making timely upgrade the primary mitigation.
