MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that a target application built against C-Blosc2 3.3.2 or earlier actually invoke blosclz_decompress on attacker-influenced compressed input using the blosclz codec - i.e., the application must accept and decompress untrusted Blosc2/blosclz data. The attacker must craft length and offset fields that overflow the additive output-buffer bounds check. Limiting factors: the vendor rates the attack as high-complexity and 'difficult' (AC:H), impacts are Low across confidentiality/integrity/availability, and there is no user-interaction or privilege requirement per the vector, but successful triggering depends on the specific codec path and the application feeding untrusted data through it; no default network service is exposed by the library itself. |
| Impact | This is a real but low-priority memory-safety defect in the blosclz codec of C-Blosc2. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N with VC/VI/VA all Low, base 6.3) signals a remotely reachable but hard-to-exploit integer overflow: the vendor description explicitly says the flaw is of 'high complexity' and that 'exploitability is said to be difficult,' consistent with AC:H. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public proof-of-concept exploit accompany this record - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The source diff corroborates the CWE-190 classification: the fix replaces additive bounds checks like |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An application links C-Blosc2 (≤3.3.2) and decompresses blosclz-compressed data received from an untrusted source (a file, network stream, or dataset). An attacker crafts a malformed compressed block with length/offset fields engineered to overflow the internal bounds arithmetic, causing blosclz_decompress to write past the output buffer. No public PoC exists, and the vendor rates exploitation as difficult, so achieving reliable code execution (versus a crash) would require significant effort. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
An integer overflow in the blosclz decompression path of C-Blosc2 3.3.2 and earlier allows a remote attacker who can supply crafted compressed data to a program that calls blosclz_decompress to corrupt an output-buffer bounds computation, potentially causing memory corruption. Successful exploitation depends entirely on a consuming application accepting and decompressing attacker-influenced Blosc2/blosclz data, and the vendor characterizes the attack as high complexity and difficult; per the CVSS 4.0 vector the impact is Low across confidentiality, integrity, and availability and no privileges or user interaction are required. There is no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, so this is assessed as a real but low-priority memory-safety defect; the vendor-released fix is version 3.3.3.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to C-Blosc2 3.3.3, which is the vendor-released patch for this issue, and rebuild/redeploy any application that statically or dynamically links c-blosc2 so the fixed blosclz_decompress is actually used; the change is the commit fe2964d114d97847f56570a0ab2be2c57ccbeedc published at https://github.com/Blosc/c-blosc2/releases/tag/v3.3.3, with advisory details at https://vuldb.com/vuln/411905. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to avoid decoding untrusted data with the blosclz codec: configure the application/Blosc2 context to use an alternative codec such as zstd or lz4 for inbound data (trade-off: differing compression ratio and CPU cost, and the application must enforce the codec choice rather than honoring it from the untrusted stream). Additionally, validate and bound the compressed input before decompression - reject Blosc2 chunks whose declared nbytes/cbytes are inconsistent, cap decompression output (maxout) to the legitimately expected block size so an oversized decoded length is refused, and only accept compressed payloads from authenticated or otherwise trusted producers (trade-off: stricter validation may reject unusual but otherwise valid legacy archives). Note that newer upstream versions that already contain the widened bounds checks also include a regression test (tests/test_blosclz_bounds.c) that can be run to confirm the fix is present.

Technical ContextAI · show details
C-Blosc2 is a compression library built on blocked shuffling and multiple codecs, and blosclz is its internal FastLZ-derived fast compression codec implemented in blosc/blosclz.c. This issue is a CWE-190 integer overflow that manifests as flawed bounds checking in blosclz_decompress: the pre-patch code validated the output pointer with additive expressions such as (op + len > op_limit) and (op + 2 > op_limit), and validated back-references with (ref - 1 < output). When length/offset fields taken from attacker-controlled compressed input are large or the pointers are near the buffer limits, those additions can overflow or otherwise mis-evaluate, so the check passes when it should fail, allowing a match or literal copy to run past the intended output buffer. The upstream fix (commit fe2964d114d97847f56570a0ab2be2c57ccbeedc, released as v3.3.3) rewrites the checks in subtraction form (for example len > op_limit - op and ctrl > ip_limit - ip, which cannot overflow the same way), tightens the reference lower-bound test to ref <= (uint8_t*)output, and adds an explicit guard that rejects a decoded length greater than maxout. Because the defect lives in a library routine, exposure exists only where an application, service, or pipeline feeds untrusted Blosc2 payloads into the blosclz codec; the library itself exposes no network service. The affected package is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:blosc:c-blosc2:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all versions up to and including 3.3.2).

DescriptionCVE.org
A vulnerability was determined in Blosc C-Blosc2 up to 3.3.2. This impacts the function blosclz_decompress of the file blosc/blosclz.c of the component blosclz Decompression. Executing a manipulation can lead to integer overflow. The attack may be launched remotely. A high complexity level is associated with this attack. The exploitability is said to be difficult. Upgrading to version 3.3.3 will fix this issue. This patch is called fe2964d114d97847f56570a0ab2be2c57ccbeedc. The affected component should be upgraded.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Integer overflow occurs when an arithmetic operation produces a result that exceeds the maximum value a given integer type can store.
