Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to establish an LDAP connection that an attacker can respond to or intercept - i.e. the client connects to an attacker-controlled or compromised LDAP server, or the attacker holds a man-in-the-middle position on the LDAP channel; the malicious BER response can be delivered by an unauthenticated pre-bind peer. The key limiting factor is that the attacker must be able to return server responses to the victim client, so purely outbound connections to trusted directory servers are not exposed. Embedding servers are notably exposed only when they did NOT set the MAX_PDU_SIZE_ATTR limit; setting that attribute caps the allocation and mitigates the issue. Applies to Apache Directory LDAP API versions 1.2.0 up to (not including) 1.2.9.

Impact

This is a genuine but moderate-priority availability issue. The CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5 HIGH) is internally consistent with the description: a malicious LDAP peer or MITM can trigger a large memory allocation from a small BER-encoded response over the network, with no authentication or user interaction, affecting only availability (OutOfMemoryError / heap exhaustion), no confidentiality or integrity impact. The SSVC framework aligns and tempers this: Exploitation=none (no observed exploitation), Automatable=yes (the same malicious bytes work repeatedly against any vulnerable client/embedding server), Technical Impact=partial (DoS, not full compromise). EPSS is low at 0.19% (8th percentile) and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of real-world exploitation. The signals are therefore consistent rather than conflicting: a real, easily-automatable DoS primitive but currently with low exploitation likelihood. Priority should be driven by exposure - clients or embedding servers that connect to untrusted LDAP endpoints or are reachable by pre-bind unauthenticated peers warrant prompt patching; purely internal deployments talking only to trusted directory servers face lower practical risk. Note the high CVSS (7.5) reflects easy, unauthenticated, network-triggerable DoS, not severity of impact, which is limited to availability.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who controls an LDAP server, or performs a man-in-the-middle on a client's LDAP connection, returns a small crafted BER-encoded response whose length field declares a very large value. The client's Apache Directory LDAP API decoder allocates the oversized buffer before any payload arrives, and a handful of such connections exhaust the JVM heap, producing an OutOfMemoryError that crashes or hangs the client (or an embedding server that did not set MAX_PDU_SIZE_ATTR). No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, but the technique is trivially reproducible from the description.

AnalysisAIv2 – Oct 05, 2026

Denial of service in Apache Directory LDAP API versions 1.2.0 through 1.2.8 allows a malicious LDAP peer or man-in-the-middle to crash a client JVM by causing a huge heap allocation before any response payload is delivered. A tiny crafted BER-encoded message declares an oversized length value, and the client's decoder allocates accordingly, producing an OutOfMemoryError that bypasses the decoder's exception handling and pins memory per stalled connection; a handful of such connections can exhaust the heap of any embedding application that failed to set MAX_PDU_SIZE_ATTR. The flaw is remotely triggerable by an unauthenticated peer (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 7.5) and requires the victim to connect to, or be intercepted by, an attacker-influenced LDAP server; EPSS is low at 0.19% (8th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

Denial of service in Apache Directory LDAP API 1.2.0 through 1.2.8 allows an attacker who controls or can man-in-the-middle an LDAP peer to exhaust the client JVM heap with a single tiny response: a BER-encoded message declaring an oversized length triggers a large memory allocation before any payload bytes arrive, and because the resulting OutOfMemoryError is an Error rather than a DecoderException, the library's normal decoding error handling never runs. No authentication or valid response data is required (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H), and a handful of stalled connections can pin enough heap to take down the process; the same bytes can be sent pre-bind by an unauthenticated client against any embedding server that has left MAX_PDU_SIZE_ATTR unset. There is no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation at time of analysis, but the flaw is trivially reachable in any deployment that talks to an untrusted or spoofed LDAP endpoint, and a vendor fix is available in version 1.2.9.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Apache Directory LDAP API 1.2.9, the vendor-released fixed version, per the Apache advisory at https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/b8kg8881pc0v8lp59w0fcfrs69wjbqvd and the oss-security posts at https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2026/q4/32 and http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2026/10/02/3; patch availability is confirmed by the vendor. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, set MAX_PDU_SIZE_ATTR on the LDAP connection to a value that matches the legitimate response sizes of the directory servers in use - this caps the pre-allocation and neutralizes the oversized-length primitive, with the trade-off that PDU limits set too low will cause legitimate large searches, attribute-heavy entries, or paged results to fail, so the value must be baselined against real traffic. Additional compensating controls: restrict client connections to trusted, hardened directory servers and enforce certificate validation on LDAPS/StartTLS so a man-in-the-middle cannot substitute the malicious response (this defends the interception path but not an attacker who controls the configured server); monitor or cap per-connection memory with JVM container limits and heap-size limits so a single stalled connection cannot consume the entire heap, accepting that this converts a full-JVM outage into connection-level failures. Given exploitation is assessed as requiring attacker control of, or interception of, the LDAP response channel, network-path hardening and MAX_PDU_SIZE_ATTR are the highest-value interim mitigations until the 1.2.9 upgrade is deployed.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The affected component is the LDAP client protocol stack of the Apache Directory LDAP API, which parses ASN.1 BER-encoded messages received from directory servers. The root cause maps to CWE-789 (Memory Allocation with Excessive Size Value): the decoder trusts a length field supplied by the peer and allocates a buffer of that size before validating it against any configured maximum or before the corresponding bytes arrive. Because the allocation happens ahead of payload consumption, a peer can announce a very large PDU using only a few bytes, and because OutOfMemoryError is an Error rather than an Exception, it is not caught by the DecoderException handlers that normally convert malformed input into protocol errors - the JVM instead terminates or the oversized allocation stays resident while the attacker stalls the connection. The relevant configuration knob is MAX_PDU_SIZE_ATTR, which sets an upper bound on accepted PDU size; embedding servers that never set it inherit unbounded allocation behavior and are exposed to the same pre-bind, unauthenticated bytes. The issue affects Apache Directory LDAP API 1.2.0 up to, but not including, 1.2.9, per the Apache advisory, NVD entry, and EUVD-2026-91333; the CPE string cpe:2.3:a:apache_software_foundation:apache_directory_ldap_api covers the product family, and CISA's SSVC assessment rates exploitation as none with automatable attack delivery and partial technical impact.

DescriptionCVE.org

Memory allocation with excessive size value vulnerability in Apache Directory LDAP API.

A malicious peer (or a MITM) can send a small BER-encoded response causing a large memory allocation before any data is received. This can lead to an OutOfMemoryError and denial of service.

The client JVM OOMs (OutOfMemoryError bypasses the DecoderException handlers) or pins the large allocation per connection while the attacker stalls.

A handful of connections exhausts any heap. The same bytes from an unauthenticated pre-bind client hit any embedding server that did not set MAX_PDU_SIZE_ATTR.

This issue affects Apache Directory LDAP API: from 1.2.0 before 1.2.9.

Users are recommended to upgrade to version 1.2.9, which fixes the issue.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Apache Directory LDAP API versions 1.2.0 through 1.2.8 contain a high-severity denial-of-service flaw that can crash a client Java virtual machine when it connects to or is intercepted by an attacker-influenced LDAP server. The flaw is remotely triggerable by an unauthenticated peer, and a small number of stalled connections can exhaust heap memory and take down any embedding application that has not set a maximum PDU size. Because this library is commonly embedded in identity and directory-dependent services, leadership should prioritize patching and configuration review to avoid availability disruptions, though no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the EPSS score is low.
