MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a specific, non-default Electron deployment: the application must (1) enable the <webview> tag, (2) run the embedder UNSANDBOXED (sandbox:false) with Node integration disabled, and (3) load untrusted or attacker-controllable content into the guest. Given those, the guest sets 'nodeIntegrationInWorker' (e.g. via the webpreferences attribute) to spawn a Node-capable Web Worker. Limiting factors that reduce real-world exposure: apps that never enable <webview>, apps that keep the embedder sandboxed, or apps that only load trusted first-party content are NOT affected. Workarounds confirmed by the vendor: strip nodeIntegrationInWorker from guest preferences in a 'will-attach-webview' handler, or avoid the <webview> tag for untrusted content. |
| Impact | Signals conflict sharply here. The supplied CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) and 9.8 score portray a trivially remotely exploitable, unauthenticated flaw, but the description and GHSA advisory impose hard preconditions that CVSS does not capture: the application must enable the <webview> tag AND run an unsandboxed embedder AND load untrusted guest content. CISA SSVC rates Exploitation as 'none' and Automatable as 'no', while Technical Impact is 'total' (Node.js worker = arbitrary code execution). EPSS is low (0.45%, 37th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit was identified - only vendor regression-test code ships in the patch. The honest read: this is a genuinely high-impact privilege-escalation bug (CWE-269) but NOT a widespread drive-by threat. The 9.8 overstates real-world urgency because it ignores the non-default configuration requirement; SSVC's 'none/no/total' is more representative. Priority should be HIGH for the subset of Electron apps that use <webview> with an unsandboxed embedder and render untrusted content, and LOW for everyone else. Note explicitly: CVSS says AC:L/PR:N, but exploitation depends on an operator-chosen, non-default embedder configuration - verify your app's webPreferences before deprioritizing or prioritizing. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An Electron app enables the <webview> tag with an unsandboxed embedder (nodeIntegration disabled) and loads attacker-controlled or compromised web content into the guest. The malicious guest page sets nodeIntegrationInWorker via its webpreferences and spawns a Web Worker that gains Node.js 'require', escalating beyond the privilege the embedder intended and achieving host-level code execution. No public weaponized exploit exists, but the vendor advisory includes a proof-of-concept regression test demonstrating the worker obtaining Node access. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv2 – Oct 15, 2026
Privilege escalation in the Electron framework lets a <webview> guest grant itself Node.js integration inside its Web Workers even when the embedding (embedder) application has Node integration turned off, so untrusted guest content can obtain a more privileged JavaScript execution context than the host application intended to allow. Affected releases are npm/electron before 41.10.6, 42.x before 42.9.2, 43.x before 43.4.1, and 44.0.0-alpha.x before 44.0.0-beta.5 (CPE cpe:2.3:a:electron:electron). Exploitation is not automatic: the independent assessment requires a non-default deployment where the app enables the <webview> tag, runs the embedder unsandboxed with nodeIntegration disabled, and loads attacker-controllable content into the guest - applications that never enable <webview>, keep the embedder sandboxed, or only load trusted first-party content are unaffected. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis (CISA SSVC: Exploitation none, Automatable no, Technical Impact total) and EPSS is low at 0.45% (37th percentile), although the underlying privilege boundary is a total-compromise class issue where it applies; the NVD-style vector scores 9.8, while our independent assessment reflects the higher attack complexity and changed scope (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) imposed by those preconditions.
Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
Privilege escalation in the Electron framework lets untrusted content loaded into a <webview> guest create a Node.js-enabled Web Worker even when the embedding application has Node integration disabled, granting the guest more privilege than the host application intended to delegate. Affected are Electron builds prior to 41.10.6, 42.9.2, 43.4.1 and 44.0.0-beta.5, but only applications that enable the <webview> tag, keep the embedder unsandboxed (sandbox:false) with Node integration off, and load untrusted or attacker-influenced content - apps that never use <webview> or keep the embedder sandboxed are unaffected. Exploitation requires the victim to trigger loading of malicious guest content (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, 8.3 High), and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to a fixed Electron release: vendor-released patch versions are 41.10.6, 42.9.2, 43.4.1 and 44.0.0-beta.5 - pick the highest fixed line your application supports and rebuild (release tags: https://github.com/electron/electron/releases/tag/v41.10.6, .../v42.9.2, .../v43.4.1, .../v44.0.0-beta.5; advisory: https://github.com/electron/electron/security/advisories/GHSA-9qh4-3jw8-366w). If you cannot upgrade immediately, the vendor-confirmed workaround is to strip nodeIntegrationInWorker from the guest preferences inside a will-attach-webview handler so the guest cannot re-enable Node in workers; the trade-off is that any legitimate guest code relying on Node inside Web Workers will stop working. Additional compensating controls: do not enable the <webview> tag at all when rendering untrusted or third-party content, and keep the embedder sandboxed (sandbox: true) with contextIsolation enabled - this fully closes the reported path because a sandboxed embedder cannot propagate Node/WWorker privileges, but it may break application code that depends on Node APIs in renderer or preload logic, so test before enabling in production. Because the vulnerable configuration is non-default and exploitation requires attacker-controllable guest content, inventory your Electron applications for webviewTag: true combined with sandbox: false as the priority triage signal.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Electron is a Chromium/Node.js desktop application framework whose <webview> tag embeds a separate, guest web contents inside a host (embedder) page. Each web contents is configured through webPreferences flags - contextIsolation, javascript, nodeIntegration, nodeIntegrationInWorker, sandbox, nodeIntegrationInSubFrames and enableWebSQL - and the guest could previously request its own values through the webpreferences attribute. The flaw is a CWE-269 improper privilege management issue: the guest's nodeIntegrationInWorker preference was not treated as security-critical, so a guest could set it (for example webpreferences="nodeIntegrationInWorker=yes") and cause a dedicated Web Worker to be created with access to Node's require, even though the embedder had nodeIntegration disabled and the embedder never delegated that capability. Web Workers are a separate JavaScript execution context, so the guest effectively re-opened the Node integration surface the embedder had closed, in a context the embedder did not control. The upstream fix makes the security-critical webPreferences one-way restrictions: a guest can never be made less secure than its embedder. Concretely the patch adds nodeIntegrationInWorker to the security webPreferences lists in lib/browser/guest-view-manager.ts (makeWebPreferences) and lib/browser/guest-window-manager.ts, sets options::kNodeIntegrationInWorker in shell/browser/web_contents_preferences.cc when appending command-line switches, and documents that when the embedder sets contextIsolation, javascript, nodeIntegration, nodeIntegrationInWorker, sandbox, nodeIntegrationInSubFrames or enableWebSQL to its more secure value, the guest inherits that value and the matching webpreferences entry is ignored. Regression tests in spec/webview-spec.ts assert that a guest worker's typeof require is undefined both with an unsandboxed embedder and with a sandboxed embedder.

Electron is a framework for writing cross-platform desktop applications using JavaScript, HTML and CSS. Prior to 41.10.6, 42.9.2, 43.4.1, and 44.0.0-beta.5, an Electron <webview> guest could enable nodeIntegrationInWorker for its Web Workers even when the unsandboxed embedder had Node.js integration disabled, allowing untrusted guest content to create a Node-enabled worker with more privilege than the embedder granted. Applications that do not enable the <webview> tag or that keep the embedder sandboxed are not affected. This issue is fixed in versions 41.10.6, 42.9.2, 43.4.1, and 44.0.0-beta.5.

Executive ViewAI
A privilege-escalation flaw in the Electron framework (CVE-2026-102676) can allow untrusted content running inside a <webview> guest to gain Node.js execution privileges that the host application intended to deny, putting any desktop application that embeds third-party or user-supplied content at risk. Exploitation is not automatic and depends on a non-default configuration - the webview tag enabled, an unsandboxed embedder, and attacker-controllable guest content - but the resulting access is high-privilege, so engineering and product security leadership should prioritize upgrading affected Electron-based clients. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, which gives teams a limited window to remediate before exploit code appears.
