The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:L, score 5.3) tells the real story: network-reachable and low-complexity, but requiring an existing authenticated session (PR:L) and yielding no confidentiality impact (VC:N) - only low integrity and availability effects limited to another user's avatar/profile meta. The E:P flag plus the description ('The exploit has been published') confirm publicly available exploit code exists, but this is NOT the same as active exploitation: there is no CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score provided, so there is no evidence of in-the-wild use. Object-level authorization bypass in owen2345 Camaleon CMS through 2.9.2 lets an authenticated user who holds only the media-library permission (:manage, :media) overwrite another user's avatar by calling the admin media crop endpoint with the saved_avatar parameter set to a victim's user ID. The crop action reaches the same avatar meta write that UsersController#update protects with :manage, :users, but enforces only the media permission, so the media library becomes a side door into profile editing; post-PR-#1267 the target is scoped to current_site.users, limiting the bypass to same-site, cross-user writes rather than cross-tenant ones. Publicly available exploit code exists (CVSS 4.0 vector carries E:P), and the vendor has released a fix in 2.9.3; the exposure is limited to profile-meta tampering with no access to passwords, credentials, or confidential data, so the assessed risk is genuinely low. No confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Camaleon CMS 2.9.3 (https://github.com/owen2345/camaleon-cms/releases/tag/2.9.3), which is the vendor-released patch for this issue; if an immediate upgrade is not possible, backport commit c143e145caa600947e70a240e87f2fed889149d3, which adds an authorize! :manage, :users check for any non-self saved_avatar value before the target is resolved and before any upload/crop work is performed. Vendor advisory detail is available at https://vuldb.com/vuln/411164 and https://vuldb.com/cve/CVE-2026-102261. Where code changes cannot be deployed quickly, the most effective compensating control is to audit role assignments and remove the :manage, :media capability from any role whose holders are not trusted to edit other users' profiles; the trade-off is that those roles lose all legitimate media-library management, and the change must be paired with a review of existing avatar metadata for unexplained modifications. Operators of releases predating PR #1267 should treat cross-tenant avatar tampering as in scope and prioritize upgrading or backporting both changes. Because the patched endpoint answers an unauthorized saved_avatar request with a flash error and a 302 redirect to the dashboard, repeated 302 responses on the admin media crop route are a useful detection signal for attempted abuse, though they should not be relied on as a primary control. Note that the flaw only permits avatar/profile-meta writes and does not expose passwords or credentials, so credential-rotation responses are unnecessary; the residual risk after mitigation is limited to profile tampering.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Camaleon CMS is a Ruby on Rails content management system whose admin controllers use CanCanCan-style authorize! capability checks. The avatar meta value has two write paths in the application: UsersController#update (meta[:avatar]), which routes through validate_role/SELF_TARGET_ACTIONS and requires :manage, :users for any non-self target, and Admin::MediaController#crop (saved_avatar), which at the affected versions performed no per-target check at all and was gated only by :manage, :media. The root cause is CWE-639, authorization bypass through a user-controlled key: the caller supplies the target user identifier in the request parameter and the server applies the write without re-evaluating the caller's authority over that specific object. An earlier fix, PR #1267 (spec avatar-target-tenancy), scoped the resolved target through current_site.users, closing the cross-tenant boundary but leaving the same-site, cross-user boundary open. The 2.9.3 fix (commit c143e145caa600947e70a240e87f2fed889149d3) adds authorize! :manage, :users when params[:saved_avatar] is present and differs from cama_current_user.id, deliberately evaluating the decision from the parameter before resolving the target (so a denied caller cannot use the response as an existence oracle) and before cama_tmp_upload/crop work (so no disk writes occur on a denied request). The change reuses the existing :manage, :users permission rather than introducing a new one, keeps the self-service path working for media managers editing their own avatar, and leaves users#update untouched; denial surfaces as the endpoint's standard CanCan::AccessDenied handling (flash error plus 302 redirect to the dashboard).

2DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw has been found in owen2345 Camaleon CMS up to 2.9.2. Impacted is the function crop of the file app/controllers/camaleon_cms/admin/media_controller.rb of the component Media Crop Handler. This manipulation of the argument saved_avatar causes authorization bypass. The attack may be initiated remotely. The exploit has been published and may be used. Upgrading to version 2.9.3 is recommended to address this issue. Patch name: c143e145caa600947e70a240e87f2fed889149d3. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
