MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the target YouTrack instance to have the mailbox integration enabled with regex-based mail-rule filters configured - a non-default, operator-dependent feature. Exploitation is unauthenticated (PR:N) and requires no user interaction (UI:N) since the malicious email is processed automatically, but AC:H reflects the need for the vulnerable mail-rule configuration to be present and for the attacker to craft input that forces catastrophic regex backtracking. Impact is limited to availability (CPU/thread exhaustion / denial of service); there is no confidentiality or integrity effect. Instances that do not use mailbox mail-rule regex filtering are not exposed. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but modest-priority availability issue. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 5.9) tells a coherent story: network-reachable and pre-authentication (PR:N), but high attack complexity (AC:H) and impact limited strictly to availability (C:N/I:N/A:H) - a classic ReDoS/catastrophic-backtracking denial of service, consistent with CWE-1333 (Inefficient Regular Expression Complexity). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation - this looks like a vendor-discovered hardening fix rather than an urgent threat. The AC:H rating is meaningful here: exploitation depends on the YouTrack instance actually using mailbox/mail-rule regex filters, and on the attacker crafting input that triggers pathological backtracking, which limits real-world reach. Net: real defect, patch available, but not an emergency - prioritize during normal patch cycles unless the mailbox integration is heavily used. No data is directly conflicting; the main gap is the absence of exploitation-probability signals (EPSS/KEV/POC all absent), which is neutral, not exonerating. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker sends a specially crafted email to a mailbox that a YouTrack instance monitors, where the message content or headers are evaluated against regex-based mail-rule filters. The malicious string triggers catastrophic regex backtracking (ReDoS), consuming CPU and stalling the mail-processing thread, degrading or denying service. No public exploit code is identified, and success requires the mailbox regex mail-rule feature to be configured, matching the high attack complexity. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Denial of service in JetBrains YouTrack allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to exhaust server CPU and request-handling threads by sending crafted email content that triggers catastrophic regular-expression backtracking in mailbox mail-rule filters, affecting all releases up to 2026.2.19197. The impact is limited to availability (CVSS:C:N/I:N/A:H, base score 5.9); there is no confidentiality or integrity effect. Exposure is contingent on a non-default, operator-dependent configuration - the mailbox integration must be enabled with regex-based mail-rule filters - and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so this is a genuine but modest-priority availability issue rather than a broadly exploitable one.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor fix by upgrading JetBrains YouTrack to 2026.2.19197 or later; this is the patched release identified for CVE-2026-100267, and details are published at the JetBrains security advisory page https://www.jetbrains.com/privacy-security/issues-fixed/. Vendor-released patch: 2026.2.19197. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most effective compensating control is to disable the mailbox integration or, at minimum, remove or replace regex-based mail-rule filters with literal string matches - the trade-off is loss of the flexible mail-triage automation that those rules provide, so affected teams should stage replacement rules before disabling them. Where the mailbox must stay active, isolate the risk by pointing the integration at a dedicated mailbox address that is not publicly discoverable, and rate-limit or quarantine inbound messages to that address at the mail gateway; this reduces the ability to flood the regex engine repeatedly, but it does not eliminate the backtracking condition for a single crafted message and adds mail-flow latency. Additionally, monitor YouTrack process CPU and mail-processing thread saturation for sustained spikes as a detection signal, and consider capping per-request regex execution where the platform allows it. None of these workarounds are equivalent to upgrading, since the vulnerable regex evaluation logic remains present until 2026.2.19197 is installed.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-1333 (Inefficient Regular Expression Complexity), commonly known as ReDoS. YouTrack's mailbox integration retrieves inbound email and applies operator-defined mail-rule filters, some of which accept regular expressions for matching subject lines, senders, or bodies. When a regex exhibits nested quantifiers or ambiguous alternation, a crafted input can cause the regex engine to explore an exponential number of backtracking paths; a single matching operation can therefore consume a CPU thread for seconds to minutes. Because incoming mail is processed automatically without user interaction (UI:N) and without prior authentication against YouTrack's UI (PR:N), an attacker who knows or guesses the mailbox address can repeatedly deliver such messages to accumulate thread exhaustion. The assessed vector AC:H reflects two preconditions: the vulnerable regex-based mail-rule configuration must actually exist on the target, and the attacker must craft input that reliably forces backtracking in that specific pattern. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:jetbrains:youtrack:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* and the ENISA EUVD entry (EUVD-2026-90011) both scope the issue to YouTrack 0 < 2026.2.19197. Instances that do not use mailbox mail-rule regex filtering are not exposed to this class of attack at all.

Unauthenticated email input reaches the parser (AV:N/PR:N/UI:N), but exploitation needs the regex mail-rule feature configured and crafted backtracking input (AC:H); impact is availability-only.
