| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the ZITADEL login UI v2 (login V2) to be in use on an affected version (4.0.0-rc.1 through 4.7.0); the flaw lives in the /logout endpoint, which routes to the unvalidated post_logout_redirect GET parameter. Concrete limiting factors from the advisory: (1) the victim must interact by opening the attacker-crafted logout URL (CVSS UI:R); (2) multiple user sessions must be active in the same browser for the attack to achieve its goal; and (3) account takeover is fully mitigated for accounts protected by Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) or Passwordless authentication, so only single-factor accounts are at real takeover risk. Instances not running login V2 are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity DOM-based XSS (CWE-79) carrying a realistic-but-conditional risk profile, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 6.1) indicates a network-reachable, unauthenticated flaw that nonetheless requires user interaction (UI:R) and yields only limited confidentiality/integrity impact with a scope change into the browser context. EPSS corroborates a relatively low near-term exploitation probability (0.30%, 21st percentile), and there is no CISA KEV listing and no referenced public proof-of-concept, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' No SSVC decision record is provided in the input. The practical risk is tempered by two documented preconditions in the vendor advisory: the victim must have multiple active sessions open in the same browser, and account takeover is mitigated entirely when MFA or Passwordless authentication is enforced - meaning the worst-case (password reset / account takeover) applies mainly to single-factor deployments. Net: a genuine, patch-worthy issue for internet-facing ZITADEL login-V2 instances, but not an emergency mass-exploitation candidate; prioritize based on whether MFA is enforced org-wide. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a ZITADEL /logout URL with a malicious post_logout_redirect value containing a JavaScript payload and lures a logged-in user (who has one or more active sessions in that browser) to click it. Because the login-V2 UI routes to the attacker-supplied value without validating it, the script executes in the ZITADEL login domain, allowing the attacker to drive a password reset and take over single-factor accounts. No public exploit code is referenced, and success depends on the victim clicking the link (UI:R) and having concurrent active sessions. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
DOM-based cross-site scripting (XSS) in ZITADEL's login UI v2 (versions 4.0.0-rc.1 through 4.7.0) allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript in a victim's browser by crafting a /logout URL with a malicious post_logout_redirect parameter. Exploitation requires the victim to interact with the link (UI:R) and multiple active sessions in the same browser, and account takeover is fully mitigated for accounts with MFA or Passwordless authentication enabled. No public exploit code has been identified, and the EPSS score is low (0.30%, 21st percentile). Vendor-released patch: 4.7.1.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to ZITADEL login UI v2 version 4.7.1 or later (vendor-released patch). The patch is included in commit 4c879b47334e01d4fcab921ac1b44eda39acdb96. For custom login UIs, switch to the new logout_token parameter and verify the JWT signature with the instance's OAuth2/OIDC public keys (jwks_uri). Before upgrading, ensure ZITADEL_API_URL is set to your instance, the HTTP host (or X-Forwarded-Host) is passed through the reverse proxy, and for multi-instance deployments, x-zitadel-instance-host (or x-zitadel-forward-host) is set. As a compensating control, enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) or Passwordless authentication for all users, which mitigates account takeover even if the XSS is exploited. No other workaround is documented in the advisory.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a DOM-based XSS (CWE-79) in ZITADEL's login V2, implemented as a Next.js application. The /logout endpoint fails to validate the post_logout_redirect GET parameter before using it to route or redirect, allowing injection of arbitrary JavaScript into the DOM. The fix (commit 4c879b47334e01d4fcab921ac1b44eda39acdb96) replaces query parameter-based information passing with a signed JWT (logout_token) that must be verified against the instance's OAuth2/OIDC public keys (jwks_uri). This change ensures that redirect targets are not directly controlled by unvalidated user input. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:zitadel:zitadel:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the affected product, but only systems using the login UI (v2) are vulnerable.

DescriptionNVD
ZITADEL is an open-source identity infrastructure tool. Versions 4.0.0-rc.1 through 4.7.0 are vulnerable to DOM-Based XSS through the Zitadel V2 logout endpoint. The /logout endpoint insecurely routes to a value that is supplied in the post_logout_redirect GET parameter. As a result, unauthenticated remote attacker can execute malicious JS code on Zitadel users’ browsers. To carry out an attack, multiple user sessions need to be active in the same browser, however, account takeover is mitigated when using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) or Passwordless authentication. This issue is fixed in version 4.7.1.
