| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to control a compromised or otherwise enrolled Wazuh agent that can send File Integrity Monitoring (FIM) messages to the manager - Wazuh agents authenticate to the manager with registered keys, so this is not a fully anonymous internet-facing attack despite the PR:N in the published vector. The specific trigger is an agent message whose time_string field is NULL, reaching fim_fetch_attributes_state() which calls strlen() without a NULL check. Limiting factors: attacker must first subvert/impersonate an agent (authenticated foothold), impact is confined to crashing the analysisd process (recoverable via restart, no data exposure), and any Wazuh manager on 4.11.0 or later is not affected. |
| Impact | This is a NULL-pointer dereference (CWE-252/unchecked state) in Wazuh's fim_fetch_attributes_state() that crashes the analysisd daemon - a denial-of-service with no confidentiality or integrity impact. Signals are moderate and internally consistent: the vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 6.9 (MEDIUM) with VA:L and all other impacts N; CWE-252 and the description both point to availability-only harm. A public advisory/exploit reference exists (GitHub GHSA-9xj3-vc52-48p9), so publicly available exploit code exists, but this is NOT in CISA KEV and there is no active-exploitation signal, so POC availability should not be read as in-the-wild use. The single most important nuance is an authentication conflict: the CVSS vector claims PR:N (unauthenticated), yet the description requires 'a compromised agent' - i.e. an attacker must already control an enrolled, key-authenticated Wazuh agent to send the crafted message. That materially raises the real-world bar and means PR:N likely overstates reachability - verify with the vendor advisory. Net: a real but bounded availability issue for defensive monitoring infrastructure, worth prioritized patching in Wazuh fleets but not an emergency widespread-exploitation scenario. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has compromised an existing Wazuh agent (or can impersonate an enrolled one) crafts a malicious FIM message with a NULL time_string field and sends it to the Wazuh manager. When analysisd calls strlen() on the unchecked value it dereferences NULL and crashes, disabling the manager's log-analysis and detection pipeline until restarted. Public exploit/advisory detail exists (GHSA-9xj3-vc52-48p9), lowering the effort to reproduce. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Denial of service in Wazuh Manager (all versions prior to 4.11.0) allows an attacker who controls a compromised or otherwise enrolled Wazuh agent to crash the analysisd daemon by sending a specially crafted File Integrity Monitoring message whose time_string field is NULL, which is then passed to strlen() in fim_fetch_attributes_state() without a NULL check. Impact is confined to availability of the manager's analysis daemon - no confidentiality or integrity loss - and the daemon can be recovered by restart, though repeated messages can sustain the outage. Publicly available exploit code exists, but the flaw is not listed in CISA KEV and active exploitation has not been confirmed. Note that the published CVSS 4.0 vector carries PR:N, whereas our assessment scores PR:L because the attacker must first subvert or impersonate an agent that authenticates to the manager with a registered key.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Wazuh Manager to 4.11.0 or later, which contains the fix for the missing NULL check in fim_fetch_attributes_state(); the vendor advisory at https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/security/advisories/GHSA-9xj3-vc52-48p9 documents the release. All managers in a cluster must be upgraded, since a single unpatched node still exposes the analysisd crash. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls should focus on the precondition - a hostile enrolled agent: tightly restrict agent enrollment (disabling auto-enrollment and requiring manual approval, with the trade-off of slower onboarding), rotate and revoke agent keys for endpoints that are suspect or decommissioned (unregistered agents cannot deliver the trigger message, at the cost of losing telemetry from those hosts until re-enrolled), and segment the agent service ports (1514/TCP and 1515/TCP) so only known agent networks can reach the manager (side effect: agents on mobile or roaming networks need VPN or relay infrastructure). Operationally, run analysisd under a supervisor or systemd auto-restart and alert on repeated analysisd restarts or gaps in alerting, which shortens outage windows but does not prevent the crash and can mask the underlying attack; some deployments may also consider temporarily disabling FIM attribute-state collection for higher-risk agent groups, accepting reduced file-integrity visibility in exchange for lower exposure.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Wazuh is an open source SIEM/XDR platform in which lightweight agents forward security telemetry to a central manager; the analysisd daemon on the manager parses and decodes those agent messages, including File Integrity Monitoring (FIM) state and attribute data. The agent-manager channel is authenticated - agents are enrolled and use registered keys over the agent service ports - so the message stream is not anonymous. The defect sits in fim_fetch_attributes_state(), which processes attribute state records and calls strlen() on the time_string field without first verifying the pointer is non-NULL. CWE-252 (Unchecked Return Value / missing validation of an API result) describes the class: the code proceeds on the assumption that a lookup or parsing step produced a valid string, and a message that yields a NULL pointer dereferences it, killing the analysisd process. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:wazuh:wazuh:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that the whole product line is in scope up to the fixed release; the relevant hardening requirement is defensive validation of every agent-supplied string field before use, since any enrolled endpoint (or anything that can convince the manager it is one) can shape that input.

DescriptionCVE.org
Wazuh is a free and open source platform used for threat prevention, detection, and response. Prior to 4.11.0, fim_fetch_attributes_state() implementation does not check whether time_string is NULL or not before calling strlen() on it. A compromised agent can cause a crash of analysisd by sending a specially crafted message to the wazuh manager. An attacker who is able to craft and send an agent message to the wazuh manager can cause analysisd to crash and make it unavailable. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.11.0.
