| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to control or impersonate a Wazuh agent that can deliver an agent message (specifically a crafted File Integrity Monitoring / FIM event) to the manager's analysisd processing path - the description states the actor must be 'a compromised agent.' The trigger is a specially crafted message that causes ctime_r to return NULL inside fim_alert(), after which strdup() is called on the NULL pointer. Limiting factors: the attacker must already have a trusted/enrolled agent foothold or be able to inject into the agent-to-manager channel (not anonymous external access despite the CVSS PR:N), and impact is confined to crashing the analysisd daemon (availability of alert analysis) with no data exposure or modification. Affected: Wazuh manager prior to 4.11.0; fixed in 4.11.0. |
| Impact | This is a denial-of-service vulnerability (CWE-252, unchecked return value of ctime_r before strdup) that crashes the analysisd daemon on the Wazuh manager. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L) scores it 6.9 (Medium) with availability-only impact and no confidentiality/integrity effect, which is consistent with a crash-only DoS. However, there is a meaningful conflict between the CVSS PR:N (no privileges) rating and the description, which explicitly states the attacker must be 'a compromised agent' able to 'craft and send an agent message to the wazuh manager' - in practice Wazuh agents are enrolled/registered and authenticate to the manager, so real-world exploitation presupposes attacker control of an already-trusted agent rather than a truly anonymous network attacker; verify authorization model with vendor. POC/exploit material is flagged as publicly available (the GitHub Security Advisory reference is tagged as an exploit), raising practical exploitability, but no EPSS score is provided and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. Net: a legitimately real but bounded-impact issue - easy to trigger and availability-affecting, yet gated behind having a compromised agent and limited to disrupting the analysis pipeline, not a high-urgency critical. Prioritize patching in environments where agent compromise or rogue-agent enrollment is a credible threat. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has compromised an existing Wazuh agent (or can register/spoof one) crafts a malformed File Integrity Monitoring message and sends it to the Wazuh manager. When fim_alert() processes it, ctime_r returns NULL and the code calls strdup() on it without a null check, crashing the analysisd daemon and halting alert processing. Publicly available exploit material referenced in the GitHub Security Advisory lowers the barrier to reproduction. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026
Denial of service in the Wazuh manager prior to 4.11.0 allows an actor controlling or impersonating an enrolled agent to crash the analysisd daemon by delivering a crafted File Integrity Monitoring event. Because fim_alert() calls strdup() on a ctime_r() return value without checking for NULL, a malformed agent message drives a NULL-pointer dereference that terminates alert analysis on the manager. Publicly available exploit code exists, though the attack requires an existing agent foothold or the ability to inject into the agent-to-manager channel; impact is limited to availability of analysisd with no data exposure or modification. Fixed in 4.11.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade the Wazuh manager (and keep agents on matching supported releases) to 4.11.0, which contains the fix for the unchecked ctime_r() return in fim_alert(); see the advisory at https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/security/advisories/GHSA-8rvq-mm2f-8q22 for details. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure by tightening agent enrollment and key management so an attacker cannot register or impersonate an agent, since a forged or compromised agent channel is the prerequisite for the crash; note that this does not protect against already-enrolled agents and adds enrollment overhead. Additionally, segment and firewall the manager's agent-listener port (1514/TCP by default, plus the enrollment service on 1515/TCP) so only known agents can reach it, and configure process supervision (systemd Restart=on-failure or equivalent) so analysisd is automatically restarted after a crash - accepting that alerts are dropped and rules are reloaded during each restart window. Monitor for repeated analysisd restarts or abrupt agent-driven worker terminations as an indicator of attempted exploitation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Wazuh is an open-source SIEM/XDR platform in which lightweight agents forward security telemetry - including File Integrity Monitoring (FIM) events - to a central manager, where the analysisd daemon performs decoding, rule matching, and alert generation. In fim_alert(), the manager converts a timestamp using the C library call ctime_r(), which returns NULL on failure (for example when the supplied time value is out of range for the conversion). The implementation passed that unchecked result directly into strdup(), which dereferences it, so a NULL return produces a segmentation fault that takes down analysisd. The root cause is CWE-252, Unchecked Return Value, a classic robustness gap in C code that trusts an external or attacker-influenced value to be convertible. The affected component is the manager side (CPE cpe:2.3:a:wazuh:wazuh up to but not including 4.11.0); exploitation depends on delivering a crafted message into the agent-to-manager event pipeline rather than on an unauthenticated internet-facing endpoint, which is why the independent analysis assessed PR:L rather than the CNA's CVSS 4.0 PR:N. Only availability of the analysis pipeline is affected - confidentiality and integrity are untouched.

DescriptionCVE.org
Wazuh is a free and open source platform used for threat prevention, detection, and response. Prior to 4.11.0, fim_alert() implementation does not check whether the return value of ctime_r is NULL or not before calling strdup() on it. A compromised agent can cause a crash of analysisd by sending a specially crafted message to the wazuh manager. An attacker who is able to craft and send an agent message to the wazuh manager can cause analysisd to crash and make it unavailable. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.11.0.
