Exploitation Conditions

Requires the ability to send agent messages to the Wazuh manager - in practice control of an enrolled or compromised Wazuh agent holding valid registration credentials, since agents authenticate to the manager before their messages are processed. The crafted message must reach analysisd's JSON or security_configuration_assessment (SCA) decoders and supply a field (JSON value, or SCA name/description/policy_id/file/type) that is NULL or a non-string cJSON type, so that os_strdup() is called on a NULL pointer. Limiting factors: attacker needs an existing agent foothold/enrollment key (not truly anonymous despite PR:N), impact is confined to availability (analysisd crash, no data exposure or code execution), and only Wazuh versions prior to 4.10.2 are affected.

Impact

This is a denial-of-service-only flaw (CWE-252, unchecked return/NULL value) in the Wazuh manager's analysisd daemon. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) scores 6.9 with availability-only impact (VA:L; VC/VI = N), correctly capturing that there is no confidentiality or integrity exposure - only a crash of analysisd. A publicly available POC/advisory exists (GHSA-mqpq-pcxc-8259), which raises operational concern, but this is NOT in CISA KEV and no EPSS score was supplied, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. CONFLICT TO VERIFY: the CVSS vector encodes PR:N (unauthenticated), yet the description states the attacker must be 'a compromised agent' able to 'craft and send an agent message' - in practice Wazuh agents authenticate to the manager via an enrollment key, so real-world exploitation requires an already-enrolled or compromised agent, a meaningful barrier the PR:N rating understates. Net: this is a medium-priority availability bug, not a high-priority RCE or data-exposure issue. It matters most to organizations that depend on Wazuh for continuous detection, where losing analysisd blinds the SOC, but the need for an agent foothold and the absence of KEV/EPSS signals argue against treating it as a drop-everything emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An adversary who controls or has compromised an enrolled Wazuh agent sends a specially crafted JSON message to the manager; analysisd's fillData()/JSON/SCA decoders call os_strdup() on a NULL or non-string value, dereferencing it and crashing the daemon, halting all event analysis and alerting. A public advisory/POC (GHSA-mqpq-pcxc-8259) describes the crash, and the attack is network-delivered with low complexity once agent-level access exists.

Alert me

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 19, 2026

Wazuh Manager releases before 4.10.2 contain a NULL-pointer dereference in analysisd's JSON and SCA decoders that lets a crafted agent message crash the daemon and make the manager unavailable. The flaw is availability-only: fillData()/FillScanInfo call os_strdup() on a NULL or non-string cJSON value without validating it, and exploitation requires an enrolled or compromised agent holding valid credentials (authenticated, PR:L per the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector). Publicly available exploit code exists, but no CISA KEV active-exploitation listing is associated with this CVE.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 4.10.2; upgrade Wazuh Manager to 4.10.2 or later, which includes commit 17f8dc23a6211cbb398a262fcd1b0fe61b0a8eb6 adding NULL and cJSON_IsString checks in the JSON and SCA decoders. See the vendor advisory at https://github.com/wazuh/wazuh/security/advisories/GHSA-mqpq-pcxc-8259. Because exploitation requires an authenticated agent channel, immediately revoke credentials and enrollment keys for any suspected compromised agent, restrict manager listener ports (1514/1515) to known agent networks, and monitor for analysisd restarts. If JSON or SCA decoders are not required, disabling those decoder paths reduces exposure but breaks the associated detection features; a full fix still requires upgrading to 4.10.2.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Wazuh's analysisd daemon receives and decodes events from enrolled agents; the JSON decoder (src/analysisd/decoders/plugins/json_decoder.c) and security_configuration_assessment.c parse cJSON objects into Eventinfo fields. In affected versions, fillData() checked only the key and not the value, while FillScanInfo/DecodeSCA checked pointer presence but not cJSON type before passing fields to os_strdup(); a NULL or non-string JSON value therefore produces a NULL dereference and daemon crash. The fixing commit 17f8dc23 adds !value checks and cJSON_IsString() guards. This is CWE-252 (unchecked return value) manifesting as a denial-of-service NULL-pointer dereference, not memory corruption or code execution. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:wazuh:wazuh:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that all pre-4.10.2 releases are in scope, with exploitation gated by the need to deliver a crafted event through an authenticated agent channel.

DescriptionCVE.org

Wazuh is a free and open source platform used for threat prevention, detection, and response. fillData() implementation does not check whether value is NULL or not before calling os_strdup() on it. A compromised agent can cause a crash of analysisd by sending a specially crafted message to the wazuh manager. An attacker who is able to craft and send an agent message to the wazuh manager can cause analysisd to crash and make it unavailable. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.10.2.
