MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Icinga 2 API user (PR:L) with access to an API endpoint that permits specifying a filter expression; the attacker crafts an invalid reference such as a reference to null inside that filter, whose dereference triggers the segfault. Limiting factors: valid API credentials and filter-expression permission are mandatory, so anonymous/unauthenticated exploitation is not possible; impact is limited to crashing the daemon (availability only). Affected deployments are Icinga 2 versions 2.10.0 up to (but not including) 2.15.1, 2.14.7, and 2.13.13. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-priority availability issue, not a high-urgency emergency. The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) with VA:H and both VC and VI at N confirms a pure denial-of-service: an attacker can crash the daemon but cannot read or alter data. The score of 7.1 is driven entirely by availability impact against a network-reachable service. Critically, exploitation requires PR:L - a legitimate authenticated API user with permission to submit a filter expression - which meaningfully narrows the threat to insiders or holders of compromised API credentials rather than anonymous internet attackers. The supporting signals agree on lower real-world urgency: EPSS is only 0.54% (44th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing (not actively exploited), and no public exploit code was identified. CWE-476 (null pointer dereference) is consistent with the described segfault. There is no SSVC decision data in the input to evaluate automatable/exploitation status formally. The one point worth flagging: while the bug is trivial to trigger once authenticated (the patch introduces a proper Reference type with REQUIRE_NOT_NULL guards, confirming the root cause), the authentication barrier and lack of any confidentiality/integrity impact keep this out of the 'drop everything' category. Treat as a prompt-patch availability risk, especially where API access is broadly granted. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated Icinga 2 API user - or an attacker who has obtained valid API credentials - sends a request to an endpoint that accepts a filter expression and crafts an invalid reference (e.g., a reference to null). When the daemon dereferences it, a null pointer dereference causes a segmentation fault that crashes the monitoring daemon, disrupting all monitoring. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, but the trigger is simple and well-documented by the vendor's fix. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
A null pointer dereference in the Icinga 2 monitoring daemon lets an authenticated API user crash the service by supplying a crafted filter expression that creates an invalid reference (for example a reference to null), whose dereference triggers a segmentation fault. Deployments running Icinga 2 from 2.10.0 up to versions 2.15.1, 2.14.7, and 2.13.13 are affected; the impact is availability-only (the daemon dies) with no confidentiality or integrity loss. Exploitation requires valid API credentials plus permission to use an endpoint that accepts filter expressions (PR:L, unauthenticated exploitation is not possible), and no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis; EPSS is low at roughly 0.54% (44th percentile), making this a moderate-priority availability issue rather than an emergency.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released patch by upgrading to Icinga 2 2.15.1, 2.14.7, or 2.13.13 as appropriate for the branch in use; the upstream fix is also visible in the Icinga 2 repository under pull request #6521 and documented in the GitHub advisory GHSA-v9jg-xqhj-f43g and the Icinga release blog post (https://icinga.com/blog/releasing-icinga-2-v2-15-1-2-14-7-and-2-13-13-and-icinga-db-web-v1-2-3-and-1-1-4). If immediate patching is not possible, the primary compensating control is to restrict Icinga 2 API access so that only fully trusted, necessary accounts hold API credentials and the permissions needed to submit filter expressions to endpoints such as those used for querying objects - the trade-off is reduced flexibility for dashboards and automation that rely on those queries, and it does not eliminate risk from compromised trusted accounts. Additional hardening includes binding the API listener to management interfaces only and fronting it with network ACLs or a reverse proxy that limits which clients can reach the API (trade-off: extra infrastructure and possible breakage of remote monitoring clients), and configuring Supervisors, systemd units, or a monitoring watchdog to automatically restart the icinga2 service so a crash causes a brief monitoring outage instead of prolonged downtime (trade-off: restart loops could mask repeated exploitation attempts and temporarily lose check state). Since the flaw is availability-only and requires authenticated access, none of these workarounds should delay the patch beyond a normal maintenance window.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Icinga 2 embeds its own configuration/expression language, and version 2.10.0 introduced reference semantics via the & (reference) and * (indirection/dereference) operators, backed by a new Reference primitive type (CWE-476, NULL Pointer Dereference) implemented in lib/base/reference.cpp and reference-script.cpp. The Reference object stores a Parent object pointer and an Index string, and its Get()/Set() methods call m_Parent->GetFieldByName() / SetFieldByName() without validating that the parent is non-null or that the reference resolves to a real target. When an API endpoint that evaluates user-supplied filter expressions processes an expression constructing an invalid reference - such as a reference to null - dereferencing it reaches a null parent pointer and the process segfaults, terminating the daemon. The CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:icinga:icinga) and the multi-version CPE entries correspond to the three maintained release branches affected. The fix upstream (PR #6521) hardens reference handling and adds REQUIRE_NOT_NULL guards in the reference prototype functions, and is documented in the language-reference manual.

Network-reachable API, low complexity, but requires an authenticated API user with filter access so PR:L; impact is availability-only (daemon crash), hence C:N/I:N/A:H.

DescriptionCVE.org
Icinga 2 is an open source monitoring system. From 2.10.0 to before 2.15.1, 2.14.7, and 2.13.13, when creating an invalid reference, such as a reference to null, dereferencing results in a segmentation fault. This can be used by any API user with access to an API endpoint that allows specifying a filter expression to crash the Icinga 2 daemon. A fix is included in the following Icinga 2 versions: 2.15.1, 2.14.7, and 2.13.13.
Executive ViewAI
Icinga 2 monitoring daemon versions 2.10.0 through 2.15.1, 2.14.7, and 2.13.13 are affected by a high-severity null pointer dereference that allows an authenticated API user to crash the service, causing loss of monitoring visibility. While no public exploit or confirmed active exploitation exists and exploitation requires valid credentials with filter-expression endpoint access, an outage could delay detection of other incidents. Leadership should prioritize patching because monitoring blind spots can compound operational risk, though the moderate exploitation likelihood and availability-only impact keep this from being an emergency.
