Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to first possess a valid QNAP administrator account on the target device (CVSS PR:H confirms high-privilege authentication). The flaw affects QTS 5.2.x prior to 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 and QuTS hero h5.2.x prior to h5.2.6.3195 build 20250715. The management interface must be network-reachable to the attacker (AV:N), but no user interaction is needed (UI:N). The decisive limiting factor is the administrator-privilege prerequisite, which confines realistic exploitation to compromised-credential, insider, or post-exploitation scenarios rather than unauthenticated remote attack; impact is limited to a denial-of-service with no data exposure or modification.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue despite the MEDIUM CVSS 4.0 score of 5.1. All signals align on low real-world risk: the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N) requires high privileges (PR:H), meaning an attacker must already possess a valid administrator account before exploitation is possible, and the only impact is low availability (VA:L) with no confidentiality or integrity effect. EPSS corroborates this at 0.14% (34th percentile), indicating very low probability of observed exploitation. The vulnerability is NOT listed in CISA KEV and no public exploit code is identified. The practical ceiling on impact is an attacker who is already an administrator being able to crash the service - a self-inflicted or post-compromise denial-of-service rather than an initial-access or privilege-escalation vector. No signals conflict: CVSS, EPSS, and the absence of KEV/POC all point to a low-urgency, patch-on-normal-cycle issue. The main value of patching is defense-in-depth against a compromised or rogue admin account rather than mitigating a widespread threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has already obtained QNAP NAS administrator credentials (via phishing, credential reuse, or a prior compromise) sends a crafted request to the management interface that triggers a NULL pointer dereference, crashing the affected service and causing a denial-of-service on the appliance. Because high privileges are required and the impact is limited to availability, this is realistically a post-compromise or insider-abuse scenario rather than an external break-in. No public proof-of-concept exploit has been identified at the time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv2 – Oct 18, 2026

A NULL pointer dereference in QNAP QTS 5.2.x and QuTS hero h5.2.x allows an attacker who already holds a valid administrator account on the NAS to crash or destabilize the device, producing a limited denial-of-service condition. The management interface must be network-reachable, but no user interaction is required; the decisive limiting factor is the high-privilege prerequisite, which confines realistic exploitation to compromised-credential, insider, or post-exploitation scenarios rather than unauthenticated remote attack. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified, and EPSS is low at 0.14% (34th percentile), making this a genuinely low-priority issue despite the MEDIUM CVSS 4.0 score of 5.1.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to QTS 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 or later, or QuTS hero h5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 or later, as documented in QSA-25-36 (https://www.qnap.com/en/security-advisory/qsa-25-36). Because exploitation requires an existing administrator account, the most effective compensating controls are credential hardening: enforce unique strong admin passwords, enable multi-factor authentication on all administrative accounts, and remove or disable dormant admin accounts. Restrict management-interface exposure by disabling QTS/QuTS hero access from the WAN, placing the admin UI behind a VPN or firewall allowlist, and changing the default management ports - trade-off: remote administration becomes dependent on VPN availability. Until patching is complete, monitor admin-authenticated sessions and unexpected service restarts or UI outages as potential DoS indicators. Restarting the affected service restores availability after a crash, but does not remove the underlying defect.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is classified as CWE-476 (NULL Pointer Dereference), meaning a code path dereferences a pointer that has not been initialized or has been set to NULL, typically causing the affected process to crash. In QNAP's QTS and QuTS hero operating systems - both Linux-based NAS firmware sharing a common management web interface - such faults generally terminate the handling service rather than granting code execution, which is why the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L: no confidentiality or integrity impact, only low availability impact. The CVSS 4.0 vector supplied (5.1, PR:H, VA:L) is consistent with this reading. CPE data enumerates affected QTS builds from 5.2.0.2737 (April 2024) through 5.2.3.3006 (January 2025); EUVD extends the range to all 5.2.x before the 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 fix, and the same fix version applies to QuTS hero h5.2.x.

DescriptionCVE.org

A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability has been reported to affect several QNAP operating system versions. If a remote attacker gains an administrator account, they can then exploit the vulnerability to launch a denial-of-service (DoS) attack.

We have already fixed the vulnerability in the following versions: QTS 5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 and later QuTS hero h5.2.6.3195 build 20250715 and later

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Organizations using A NULL pointer dereference vulnerability should be aware of moderate risk from CVE-2025-47213, a null pointer dereference vulnerability rated CVSS 4.9. Exploitation could compromise the security of affected deployments. Organizations should apply vendor updates when available and monitor for exploitation.

Business Impact: Low
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch. If patching is delayed: enable ASLR/DEP, apply network segmentation.
