Information Disclosure

other MEDIUM

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.

How It Works

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security. This happens through multiple channels: verbose error messages that display stack traces revealing internal paths and frameworks, improperly secured debug endpoints left active in production, and misconfigured servers that expose directory listings or version control artifacts like .git folders. APIs often leak excessive data in responses—returning full user objects when only a name is needed, or revealing system internals through metadata fields.

Attackers exploit these exposures systematically. They probe for common sensitive files (.env, config.php, backup archives), trigger error conditions to extract framework details, and analyze response timing or content differences to enumerate valid usernames or resources. Even subtle variations—like "invalid password" versus "user not found"—enable account enumeration. Exposed configuration files frequently contain database credentials, API keys, or internal service URLs that unlock further attack vectors.

The attack flow typically starts with passive reconnaissance: examining HTTP headers, JavaScript bundles, and public endpoints for version information and architecture clues. Active probing follows—testing predictable paths, manipulating parameters to trigger exceptions, and comparing responses across similar requests to identify information leakage patterns.

Impact

  • Credential compromise: Exposed configuration files, hardcoded secrets in source code, or API keys enable direct authentication bypass
  • Attack surface mapping: Stack traces, framework versions, and internal paths help attackers craft targeted exploits for known vulnerabilities
  • Data breach: Direct exposure of user data, payment information, or proprietary business logic through oversharing APIs or accessible backups
  • Privilege escalation pathway: Internal URLs, service discovery information, and architecture details facilitate lateral movement and SSRF attacks
  • Compliance violations: GDPR, PCI-DSS, and HIPAA penalties for exposing regulated data through preventable disclosures

Real-World Examples

A major Git repository exposure affected thousands of websites when .git folders remained accessible on production servers, allowing attackers to reconstruct entire source code histories including deleted commits containing credentials. Tools like GitDumper automated mass exploitation of this misconfiguration.

Cloud storage misconfigurations have repeatedly exposed sensitive data when companies left S3 buckets or Azure Blob containers publicly readable. One incident exposed 150 million voter records because verbose API error messages revealed the storage URL structure, and no authentication was required.

Framework debug modes left enabled in production have caused numerous breaches. Django's DEBUG=True setting exposed complete stack traces with database queries and environment variables, while Laravel's debug pages revealed encryption keys through the APP_KEY variable in environment dumps.

Mitigation

  • Generic error pages: Return uniform error messages to users; log detailed exceptions server-side only
  • Disable debug modes: Enforce production configurations that suppress stack traces, verbose logging, and debug endpoints through deployment automation
  • Access control audits: Restrict or remove development artifacts (.git, backup files, phpinfo()) and internal endpoints before deployment
  • Response minimization: API responses should return only necessary fields; implement allowlists rather than blocklists for data exposure
  • Security headers: Deploy X-Content-Type-Options, remove server version banners, and disable directory indexing
  • Timing consistency: Ensure authentication and validation responses take uniform time regardless of input validity

Unauthenticated access to Capgo's credential validation endpoint before version 12.128.2 enables large-scale password spraying and credential stuffing attacks against user accounts. The `POST /functions/v1/private/validate_password_compliance` Supabase Edge Function accepts requests using only the publicly distributed anon key - a client-side secret embedded in shipped app binaries - with no rate limiting or lockout enforcement. Combined with wildcard CORS headers, any browser-side or scripted attacker can systematically validate username/password pairs at scale, ultimately compromising Capgo accounts and potentially tampering with mobile app live update pipelines. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, but the attack is trivially automatable given the absence of access controls.

Account takeover in Flowise versions 3.0.7 and earlier allows an authenticated user to change their account email address via the profile endpoint without re-authenticating or confirming the change to the original email. Because email serves as both login identifier and password-recovery channel, an attacker who has hijacked a session (e.g., via XSS, stolen token, or unattended workstation) can pivot to permanent account ownership. Time-based blind SQL injection in the Infility Global WordPress plugin (versions before 2.15.20) enables authenticated attackers holding Editor-level access or higher to extract arbitrary data from the WordPress database. CSV formula injection in Actual Budget's transaction export functions allows an attacker who controls imported transaction data to embed spreadsheet formulas in Payee, Notes, Account, and Category fields, which survive verbatim into exported CSV files. Affected versions of @actual-app/web prior to 26.6.0 pass these fields to csv-stringify at export-to-csv.ts:56 and :131 without any formula-prefix neutralization, meaning strings beginning with =, +, -, @, tab, or carriage return are written raw to disk. Out-of-bounds read and denial-of-service in Zephyr RTOS's ext2 filesystem parser expose embedded devices to filesystem-level attacks via maliciously crafted disk images. The flaw resides in ext2_fetch_direntry() (subsys/fs/ext2/ext2_diskops.c), where insufficient validation of on-disk directory entry fields - specifically de_rec_len and de_name_len against block boundaries - allows a crafted ext2 image to trigger an oversized memcpy (out-of-bounds read) or a zero-progress infinite loop when de_rec_len equals zero. No public exploit code has been separately catalogued, though the PoC is trivially reproducible (click Logout, press refresh), and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV.

No public exploit has been identified and the vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV, but the local-access, active-user-interaction model (CVSS 4.0: 6.7, AV:L/UI:A) correctly reflects that this is a targeted, workspace-delivery attack rather than a remote, unauthenticated threat.

Grav CMS (getgrav/grav < 1.7.53) exposes admin bcrypt password hashes, SMTP credentials, and full site configuration to any actor who can obtain a session-static admin-nonce value - via XSS, Referrer header leakage, browser history, or proxy logs - because the backup download endpoint enforces only a single URL-embedded nonce with no form-level CSRF token and no session binding. The default backup profile archives the entire GRAV_ROOT directory including user/accounts/ and user/config/ without exclusions, and the download handler Base64-encodes the absolute filesystem path in the response URL, leaking server internals. A fully functional public PoC is available; no CISA KEV listing exists at time of analysis, but downstream risk includes offline hashcat cracking followed by unauthenticated admin login with no server-side rate limiting.

WORKDIR symlink traversal in Podman allows a malicious container image to create arbitrary directories - and under a race condition, modify ownership - directly on the host filesystem, breaking container isolation. Affected versions include Podman v5 through 5.7.0, v4 through 4.9.5, and v3 through 3.4.7; the flaw is in the WORKDIR path resolution logic, which fails to confine symlink dereferences to the container's mount namespace. Public proof-of-concept scripts are included in the vendor's GitHub advisory (GHSA-q6r4-3wmg-fwcq); no active exploitation has been confirmed via CISA KEV.

Use-after-free in Eclipse 4diac FORTE versions 3.0.0-3.1.0 allows adjacent, unauthenticated attackers to corrupt process memory by sending a specially crafted DELETE connection command to the management interface, leaving a dangling pointer exploitable by subsequent commands. The impact spans memory integrity corruption and availability loss (runtime crash), with a minor confidentiality exposure from stale freed-memory reads - meaningful risks in industrial automation deployments where FORTE orchestrates IEC 61499 distributed control logic. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and CISA KEV listing is absent, but the CVSS 4.0 supplemental Safety metric is marked Partial (S:P), flagging potential downstream safety consequences in OT environments.
