Exploitation Conditions

Requires the mistralrs-server HTTP API to be network-reachable and the online-calibration endpoint POST /calibration/apply to be invoked with a save_cimatrix argument containing a non-bare path (a leading /, a drive/absolute path, or ../ and / or \ separators) - the pre-patch code passed request.save_cimatrix straight into PathBuf::from with no validation. No authentication or user interaction is needed per the CVSS vector (PR:N/UI:N). Limiting factors: the server must actually expose the calibration/apply route to the attacker (binding to localhost or placing it behind authenticated proxy/network controls prevents remote reach), and impact is bounded to writing the server-generated .cimatrix file to an attacker-chosen location - the attacker does not control arbitrary file contents, so this is a file-placement/overwrite primitive, not direct code execution.

Impact

This is a moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:L, score 6.9) is internally consistent with the description: a remote, unauthenticated (PR:N), low-complexity path-traversal write primitive against the mistral.rs HTTP server, with no confidentiality impact (VC:N) and only limited integrity/availability impact (VI:L/VA:L) because the attacker controls the destination path of a written .cimatrix file but not its arbitrary contents. A public exploit is reported (POC=YES), which raises practical risk, but there is NO CISA KEV listing and NO EPSS score provided, so there is no evidence of widespread or automated exploitation - the signals point to opportunistic, researcher-grade exploitation rather than mass campaigns. The one caveat to verify: the record is sourced solely from VulDB, and PR:N assumes the calibration/apply endpoint is exposed without authentication; since mistral.rs ships no default auth layer, PR:N is defensible, but operators who front the server with a reverse proxy or bind it to localhost sharply reduce exposure. Net: treat as a prompt-patch item for anyone exposing the mistral.rs server beyond localhost, but it does not carry the real-world urgency of a KEV-listed RCE.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can reach the mistral.rs server's HTTP API sends a POST to /calibration/apply with a save_cimatrix value containing traversal sequences (e.g. ../../etc/ or an absolute path like /tmp/pwned.cimatrix), causing the importance-matrix file to be written outside the intended working directory. A public exploit is reported to exist, and the attack requires no authentication or user interaction per the CVSS vector; the realistic impact is overwriting or planting files at attacker-chosen locations, which can corrupt data or disrupt the service.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026

Path traversal in the mistral.rs inference server (mistralrs-server-core) through version 0.9.3 lets a remote, unauthenticated attacker direct where the server writes its calibration importance matrix by supplying a non-bare save_cimatrix value to the POST /calibration/apply endpoint. The pre-patch code passed the client-supplied string straight into PathBuf::from with no validation, so values containing '/', '\\', or '../' escape the server's working directory; impact is limited to placing/overwriting the server-generated .cimatrix file at an attacker-chosen path (no attacker-controlled file contents, no direct code execution), assessed as CVSS:3.1 6.9-level moderate risk. Publicly available exploit code exists, the vendor has released a patch in version 0.9.4 (commit 8c81056712709b4845ec6d9531e4d35bab4a367c, PR #2445), and there is no indication of confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV).

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade mistral.rs to version 0.9.4 or later (https://github.com/EricLBuehler/mistral.rs/releases/tag/v0.9.4); if upgrades are pinned, apply the fix commit 8c81056712709b4845ec6d9531e4d35bab4a367c or merge PR https://github.com/EricLBuehler/mistral.rs/pull/2445, which adds the http_save_cimatrix_path() validation that only accepts a bare file name. Because exploitation requires the attacker to reach the calibration endpoint with an attacker-controlled save_cimatrix value, effective compensating controls are: bind the mistralrs-server to 127.0.0.1 or a management-only interface and front it with an authenticated reverse proxy so POST /calibration/apply is not reachable by untrusted clients (trade-off: adds a proxy hop and requires auth configuration, but removes the remote attack path entirely); or, if the endpoint is not needed, block/disable the /calibration/apply route at the proxy or run the server with online calibration disabled (trade-off: loses the imatrix save/reuse workflow). Restricting the server's filesystem permissions to a dedicated working directory limits the overwrite blast radius but does not remove the traversal, so it should be used only in addition to, not instead of, the 0.9.4 upgrade.

Technical ContextAI · show details

mistral.rs is a Rust LLM inference engine exposing an Axum-based HTTP server in the mistralrs-server-core crate. The online-calibration feature collects an importance matrix (imatrix) during quantization and optionally persists it as a .cimatrix file so it can be reused via the --imatrix flag. In the affected code, the calibration_apply handler in mistralrs-server-core/src/handlers.rs mapped the JSON field save_cimatrix directly to std::path::PathBuf::from and forwarded it into mistralrs_core::CalibrationAction::Apply, with no check on path components - a classic CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory / Path Traversal) rooted in trusting a remote request parameter as a filesystem path. The fix introduces the helper http_save_cimatrix_path(), which rejects any value containing a '/' or '\\' separator or any component other than a single Path::Component::Normal (so "..", ".", empty strings, absolute paths, and subdirectory paths are all refused) and returns an ApiError::invalid_request otherwise; the documentation and OpenAPI schema were updated to state that the value must be a bare file name written into the server's working directory, and a regression unit test asserts the rejection cases.

DescriptionCVE.org

A vulnerability was found in EricLBuehler Mistral.rs up to 0.9.3. The affected element is the function calibration_apply of the file mistralrs-server-core/src/handlers.rs. Performing a manipulation of the argument save_cimatrix results in path traversal. The attack may be initiated remotely. The exploit has been made public and could be used. Upgrading to version 0.9.4 is sufficient to fix this issue. The patch is named 8c81056712709b4845ec6d9531e4d35bab4a367c. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
