Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to control the SNMP agent of a device actively monitored by the target LibreNMS instance (e.g., a compromised, rogue, or malicious monitored device) and to set wireless sensor DisplayString fields - the description names AI-AP-MIB::aiSSID - to a JavaScript payload; LibreNMS must ingest this via its discovery/polling of that device. The stored payload only fires when an authenticated LibreNMS user navigates to that specific device's Wireless tab (UI:P), so a logged-in victim action is mandatory. Limiting factors: affected only on versions before 26.9.0; attacker needs pre-existing control over monitored-device SNMP data (not LibreNMS credentials); impact is confined to the victim's authenticated session rather than direct server compromise.

Impact

This is a medium-severity stored XSS (CVSS 4.0 base 5.3) whose real-world urgency is materially lower than the CVSS number alone might suggest, because exploitation depends on an unusual precondition. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P, impact VC:N/VI:N/VA:N but subsequent-system SC:L/SI:L) correctly models this as network-reachable with no LibreNMS authentication required of the attacker, but requiring victim interaction (an authenticated operator opening the Wireless tab) and producing only limited confidentiality/integrity impact on a subsequent system (the victim's authenticated browser session). The critical caveat the PR:N metric obscures is that the attacker must already control the SNMP agent of a device that the target LibreNMS instance actively monitors - a significant positioning requirement that makes widespread, opportunistic exploitation unlikely and points toward targeted/insider or supply-chain-of-monitoring scenarios. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; treat this as a defense-in-depth patch priority (monitoring systems are high-value, so session hijacking of an admin is meaningful) rather than an emergency. Net: a genuine but conditional issue, not a high-urgency internet-facing RCE-class flaw.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who controls (or has compromised) a device monitored by LibreNMS configures its SNMP agent to return a malicious JavaScript payload in a wireless sensor DisplayString field such as AI-AP-MIB::aiSSID. LibreNMS stores this value during its discovery/polling cycle and later renders it unescaped on the device's Wireless tab, so the script executes in the browser of any authenticated user who views that tab, enabling session hijacking. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires both control of a monitored device's SNMP data and an authenticated victim viewing the affected page.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting (XSS) in LibreNMS before 26.9.0 allows an attacker who controls the SNMP agent of a monitored device to inject JavaScript via wireless sensor description fields, which executes in the browser of an authenticated user viewing that device's Wireless tab and can lead to session hijacking. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.3, and exploitation requires user interaction (the victim must open the affected tab) plus the unusual precondition of controlling monitored-device SNMP data rather than LibreNMS credentials. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and the independent assessment rates real-world urgency as materially lower than the raw score suggests because impact is confined to the victim's authenticated session.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to LibreNMS 26.9.0 or later; this is the vendor-released fix per GHSA-ffjc-4fr5-47c6. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls include restricting SNMP community strings or SNMPv3 credentials for monitored devices to trusted network segments and devices only, thereby reducing the ability of an attacker to inject malicious DisplayString values; trade-off is reduced monitoring coverage or increased management overhead. Additionally, limit access to the device Wireless tab to trusted authenticated users and monitor SNMP-polled data for suspicious strings, though these do not eliminate the vulnerability. No public exploit code has been identified, so prioritization can follow normal patch cycles for medium-severity issues with unusual exploitation preconditions.

Technical ContextAI · show details

LibreNMS is a PHP-based network monitoring platform that uses SNMP to discover and poll devices. In affected versions, includes/html/pages/device/wireless.inc.php echoes wireless sensor sensor_descr values - drawn from SNMP DisplayString fields such as AI-AP-MIB::aiSSID - directly into HTML without output encoding. This is a classic CWE-79 stored XSS: attacker-controlled data from a monitored device's SNMP agent is persisted during discovery and later rendered in the device's Wireless tab. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P) indicates network-based exploitation with no privileges required on LibreNMS, but user interaction is required; the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) similarly reflects scope change and low confidentiality/integrity impact. CPE cpe:2.3:a:librenms:librenms:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms all versions before 26.9.0 are affected.

DescriptionCVE.org

LibreNMS before 26.9.0 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in includes/html/pages/device/wireless.inc.php, which echoes wireless sensor sensor_descr values, populated from SNMP DisplayString fields during discovery, into HTML without escaping. Attackers controlling a monitored device's SNMP agent can set values such as AI-AP-MIB::aiSSID to malicious JavaScript that executes when authenticated users view the device's Wireless tab, enabling session hijacking.
