MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Defense Evasion, Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires network reachability to the LibreNMS REST API of an instance running a version before 26.8.0, with at least one valid API token present whose stored hash begins with a digit so it coerces to one of the integers 0-9 the attacker submits. No authentication, credentials, or user interaction are needed (PR:N/UI:N). The limiting factor is the probabilistic AT:P condition: exploitation only succeeds against tokens whose hash coerces to a small integer, so an instance with no API tokens, or tokens that do not coerce, may resist the specific 0-9 payloads. |
| Impact | The signals align on high priority: CVSS 4.0 base 9.2 with AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N and full VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, meaning network-reachable, unauthenticated, high-impact. The only friction is AT:P (a present attack requirement) - exploitation depends on a stored token hash coercing to one of the ten small integers tried, so success is probabilistic per instance rather than universal, which is why an independent CVSS 3.1 mapping warrants AC:H rather than AC:L. Even so, the attacker can iterate 0-9 cheaply and the payoff (device credentials plus alert-template RCE) is severe, so this is a genuine priority rather than an inflated high-CVSS finding; any internet-exposed or shared-network LibreNMS instance should be patched urgently. No EPSS or CISA KEV data was provided, and no public exploit code is identified at time of analysis - absence of those signals does not reduce the urgency given the low complexity and clear technical writeup from VulnCheck. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker who can reach the LibreNMS web interface sends REST API requests using a numeric token value (iterating 0 through 9) until MySQL type coercion matches a stored token hash, granting API access. From there the attacker reads stored device SNMP/SSH credentials and modifies an alert template to execute arbitrary commands on the monitoring host, pivoting into the managed network. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 07, 2026
Authentication bypass in the LibreNMS REST API (all versions before 26.8.0) lets unauthenticated remote attackers reach protected endpoints by submitting a small integer (0-9) in place of a string API token, abusing MySQL loose type coercion so the integer matches a stored token hash. Successful bypass exposes device credentials and administrative functionality, and can be chained to remote code execution through alert templates. Reported by VulnCheck; no public exploit is identified at time of analysis, though the type-confusion technique is fully described in the advisory.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to LibreNMS 26.8.0 or later, which enforces strict string comparison of API tokens (per GHSA-cvq8-gqfq-3mvg). If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict network exposure of the REST API by placing it behind a reverse proxy or firewall that limits access to trusted management subnets and by requiring an additional network-layer authentication or IP allowlist in front of the /api endpoints - the trade-off is that legitimate remote API integrations must be routed through those allowed paths. Rotate all existing API tokens and audit device credentials after patching, since any token could have been bypassed prior to the fix. Review alert templates for unexpected modifications, as they are the RCE vector once API access is obtained.

Technical ContextAI · show details
LibreNMS is an open-source PHP network monitoring platform (CPE cpe:2.3:a:librenms:librenms) that exposes a token-authenticated REST API. The root cause (CWE-287, Improper Authentication) is a type-confusion flaw: the API token supplied by the caller is compared against database-stored token hashes without strict type enforcement. When a numeric value is passed and compared in MySQL against a string hash column, MySQL coerces the string to a number for the comparison - a hash string beginning with a digit coerces to that leading integer, so values like 0 through 9 can satisfy the equality check against some stored tokens. This converts a cryptographic-token check into a trivially guessable numeric match, defeating authentication entirely for matching accounts.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
LibreNMS before 26.8.0 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in the REST API that allows unauthenticated attackers to access protected endpoints by sending numeric values instead of string tokens. Attackers can exploit MySQL type coercion by sending small integers like 0 through 9 to match token hashes, gaining access to API functionality including device credentials and administrative features that enable remote code execution through alert templates.

Executive ViewAI
An authentication bypass flaw in LibreNMS (all versions before 26.8.0) allows remote attackers without credentials to gain access to administrative functions and device credentials. This critical vulnerability in network management infrastructure can potentially lead to remote code execution, putting your entire network monitoring and control systems at immediate risk of compromise.
Apply vendor patch: upgrade to LibreNMS 26.8.0 or later. For systems that cannot be upgraded immediately: restrict REST API network access to authorized hosts only through firewall rules; temporarily disable alert templates if possible; implement reverse-proxy authentication in front of LibreNMS; strengthen API token management and implement audit logging of all API requests.
