Exploitation Conditions

Requires a valid authenticated SurrealDB account at the namespace, database, or record level (PR:L) and a SurrealDB instance running a version before 3.3.0. Exploitation is only impactful where multiple tenants (namespaces/databases) share the same instance and where target tables carry permissive PERMISSIONS such as PERMISSIONS FULL that grant the operation to the switched session. Limiting factors: no unauthenticated access is possible, impact is bounded by each target table's PERMISSIONS clause (tables with restrictive permissions are not exposed), and single-tenant deployments have no cross-tenant victim to reach.

Impact

This is an authorization-bypass flaw (CWE-639) with a vendor/VulnCheck CVSS 4.0 score of 8.6 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N). The signals are internally consistent: network attack vector, low complexity, and - critically - PR:L, meaning the attacker must already hold a valid authenticated SurrealDB account (namespace, database, or record user). It is therefore a post-authentication privilege/tenant-boundary escape, not a pre-auth remote compromise, which meaningfully lowers real-world urgency relative to the raw 8.6. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the intelligence, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation; the risk is currently theoretical/based on the advisory. The most serious real-world exposure is for multi-tenant SaaS deployments of SurrealDB where a single shared instance hosts multiple customers' namespaces/databases and where tables carry permissive PERMISSIONS (e.g. PERMISSIONS FULL) - in that configuration any one authenticated tenant can read and tamper with other tenants' data. Note the provided CVSS sets subsequent-system impact (SC/SI/SA) to N, i.e. it treats cross-tenant access as same-system impact rather than a scope change; given that tenant isolation is a security-authority boundary, the integrity/confidentiality impact across tenants is arguably understated, but the metric choice is defensible since all data lives within one database system.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who holds any legitimate low-privilege SurrealDB account on a shared multi-tenant instance (for example a customer-level namespace or database user, or a record user) connects over the network and issues a SurrealQL USE statement naming a different tenant's namespace/database. Because SurrealDB before 3.3.0 does not verify that the caller's authenticated level actually covers the target, the session switches tenants, and the attacker then reads, creates, updates, or deletes rows in any tables whose PERMISSIONS permit it (such as PERMISSIONS FULL). No public exploit is identified, but the attack requires only standard query access and no special tooling.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

SurrealDB versions before 3.3.0 fail to validate a caller's authorization level when the SurrealQL USE statement switches the session to a different namespace or database, allowing an authenticated tenant to cross tenant boundaries and read, create, update, or delete rows in other tenants' tables wherever the table's PERMISSIONS clause permits it (for example PERMISSIONS FULL). Exploitation requires a valid account at the namespace, database, or record level (CVSS 4.0 vector PR:L, unauthenticated access is not possible) and only has impact on instances hosting multiple tenants with permissively configured tables. The vendor has released 3.3.0 to correct the missing authorization check; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the flaw is not listed in CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

Upgrade SurrealDB to 3.3.0 or later, the vendor-released fix version in which the USE statement enforces the caller's authenticated namespace/database level before switching session context; consult the vendor advisory at https://github.com/surrealdb/surrealdb/security/advisories/GHSA-2v9j-645m-pcrq and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/surrealdb-before-3.3.0-cross-tenant-access-via-use-statement for release details. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, reduce exposure by auditing every table definition and removing PERMISSIONS FULL (a permissive clause that hands the switched session full read/write rights) in favor of restrictive, role-scoped PERMISSIONS rules - the trade-off is that applications depending on open table access will break and must be re-scoped to explicit roles, and this hardening only limits, not eliminates, the bypass since the session switch itself remains possible. Additional compensating controls include running separate SurrealDB instances or processes per tenant so that no shared instance hosts multiple namespaces/databases (costly in resources but removes the cross-tenant victim entirely), and restricting the network reachability of the SurrealDB endpoint (for example limiting it to application hosts via firewall or bind-to-loopback behind a trusted proxy) so that only already-trusted service accounts hold the authenticated credentials PR:L exploitation requires; note that network restriction is not a fix because a legitimate low-privileged tenant account is sufficient to trigger the flaw.

Technical ContextAI · show details

SurrealDB is a multi-model database whose multi-tenancy model is built on nested namespaces and databases, each of which can enforce its own access control through SURREALQL statements including USE, DEFINE ACCESS, and per-table PERMISSIONS clauses. The defect is a CWE-639 authorization bypass through user-controlled key: the USE statement, which selects the active namespace and/or database for the session, performs no verification that the authenticated principal's access level actually covers the requested namespace or database, so the session is simply rebound to the attacker-chosen key. Once the session context has been switched, all subsequent row operations are evaluated against the target table's PERMISSIONS definition rather than against the caller's original tenant scope, meaning the privilege boundary is effectively delegated to those clauses; tables defined with PERMISSIONS FULL therefore become fully readable and writable. The affected surface is the whole SurrealDB product (CPE cpe:2.3:a:surrealdb:surrealdb:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), with the fix landing in 3.3.0 and tracked by the vendor advisory GHSA-2v9j-645m-pcrq and the VulnCheck advisory. The CVSS 4.0 vector supplied by the reporter (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) is consistent with an unauthenticated-to-reach but authenticated-to-use network flaw that yields high confidentiality and integrity loss within the vulnerable component while leaving availability untouched.

DescriptionCVE.org

SurrealDB before 3.3.0 allows cross-tenant access because the SurrealQL USE statement switches a session to any namespace/database without checking that the caller's authenticated level covers it. Authenticated namespace, database, or record users can switch to another tenant and read, create, update, or delete rows in tables whose PERMISSIONS allow it, such as PERMISSIONS FULL.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

SurrealDB - the multi-tenant database platform used to host separate customer environments - contains an authorization flaw that lets one paying tenant reach into another tenant's tables and read, alter, or delete their records. Because the flaw exposes the very tenant-isolation guarantee that our platform's customer contracts and compliance obligations depend on, any single compromised or malicious tenant account could become a direct route to a cross-customer data breach and destructive data loss. Leadership should treat this as a customer-trust and data-integrity risk, not merely a database configuration issue.
