| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated Open WebUI account (PR:L) that already holds read access to at least one knowledge base, plus possession of a valid foreign directory UUID - the advisory notes these are 'retained' UUIDs, so the attacker must have previously observed or otherwise obtained the target directory's UUID (they are not sequential/guessable identifiers). Affected deployments are Open WebUI versions 0.9.6 up to but not including 0.11.4. Limiting factors: valid credentials are mandatory (no anonymous access), the attack only yields directory/ownership metadata rather than file contents, and the attacker needs a usable foreign directory UUID; these constraints make it an authenticated tenant-to-tenant metadata leak rather than a remote unauthenticated exposure. |
| Impact | All signals point to a genuine-but-low-priority issue rather than an urgent one. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N) scores 5.3 (Medium) and is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low attack complexity, but requiring low-level authentication (PR:L) and yielding only limited confidentiality impact (VC:L) with no integrity or availability effect - matching CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key / IDOR). No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The impact is a metadata/information-disclosure leak (folder names, owner user ids, knowledge-base ids of a directory and its ancestors), not data exfiltration of file contents or code execution, which further bounds real-world risk. Net: a legitimately authenticated tenant can enumerate structural metadata belonging to other users' knowledge bases - a real access-control defect worth patching, but not a drop-everything priority absent exploitation signals. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged but authenticated Open WebUI user who has read access to any knowledge base reuses a foreign directory UUID (retained from a prior interaction or guessed/obtained elsewhere) and calls GET /api/v1/knowledge/{id}/files. The returned breadcrumbs disclose the folder names, owner user ids, and knowledge-base ids of that directory and all of its ancestors, letting the attacker map other tenants' knowledge-base structure and ownership. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, and exploitation requires a valid authenticated session (PR:L). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
Open WebUI versions 0.9.6 through 0.11.3 allow an authenticated user who holds read access to any single knowledge base to probe the file-listing endpoint GET /api/v1/knowledge/{id}/files with a directory UUID belonging to a different knowledge base, and the response breadcrumbs disclose folder names, owner user IDs and knowledge base IDs for that directory and all of its ancestors. The flaw is an authenticated tenant-to-tenant metadata leak (CVSS 3.1 base 5.3, AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) - credentials are mandatory, file contents are not exposed, and the attack requires possession of a valid foreign directory UUID, which the advisory characterizes as a previously retained identifier rather than a guessable or sequential value. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, and the primary remediation is upgrading to 0.11.4 or later.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Open WebUI 0.11.4 or later, which is the release that resolves the unscoped directory_id handling in the knowledge base file-listing endpoint; verify the applied version against the CPE version range (0.9.6 through 0.11.3 are vulnerable). No vendor-released patch is available for older 0.9.x/0.10.x/0.11.x builds themselves, so the upgrade is the only complete fix; consult GHSA-jx3w-3pqq-7f3w (https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui/security/advisories/GHSA-jx3w-3pqq-7f3w) and the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/open-webui-0.9.6-before-0.11.4-information-disclosure-via-unscoped-directory-id) for deploy-specific guidance. Until the upgrade can be staged, compensating controls should target the preconditions rather than the endpoint itself: reduce the blast radius by auditing and revoking knowledge base read grants so that only users who genuinely need collaboration retain read access (side effect: limits legitimate sharing and may break shared-workspace workflows); reverse-proxy or WAF rules that reject or alert on requests to /api/v1/knowledge/*/files carrying a directory_id parameter that does not match the path knowledge base id can block the specific probe pattern, but they are pattern-matching defenses that will miss novel encodings and require maintenance as the API evolves; finally, treat knowledge base and directory UUIDs as sensitive identifiers, rotate or re-key UUIDs exposed in logs, exports, or previous responses (side effect: breaks existing bookmarks, links, and integrations that reference the old UUIDs), and monitor access logs for authenticated users enumerating foreign directory_id values, which provides detection only and does not prevent the disclosure.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is an instance of CWE-639, Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key - a textbook insecure direct object reference in which the object identifier is supplied by the client and never bound to the caller's authorized scope. Open WebUI's knowledge base feature organizes uploaded content into directories, each with a UUID primary key and a parent chain used to render breadcrumb navigation. The listing handler behind GET /api/v1/knowledge/{id}/files accepts a directory_id parameter and looks up the requested directory and its ancestor chain, but it verifies only that the caller can read the knowledge base named in the path - it never confirms that the supplied directory_id actually belongs to that knowledge base or to any resource the caller is permitted to see. Because the breadcrumb payload embeds folder names plus the owner user IDs and knowledge base IDs of every ancestor directory, a caller with read access to any one knowledge base can pivot horizontally into the metadata of another tenant's directory tree. Severity is bounded by three factors: the attacker must be authenticated (CVSS PR:L), the disclosure is limited to metadata rather than file contents or write operations (VC:L, VI:N, VA:N), and the UUID keys are non-sequential, so the attacker must already hold or have observed the target directory's UUID. Affected component per CPE is open-webui:open-webui at versions from 0.9.6 up to but not including 0.11.4.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Open WebUI from 0.9.6 before 0.11.4 contains an authorization flaw where the knowledge base file listing does not verify that a supplied directory_id belongs to the requested knowledge base. Users with read access to any knowledge base can supply a retained foreign directory UUID to GET /api/v1/knowledge/{id}/files. The returned breadcrumbs expose folder names, owner user ids and knowledge base ids of that directory and all its ancestors.

Authentication bypass attacks exploit flaws in the verification mechanisms that control access to systems and applications.
Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
