2 techniques across 1 tactic: Execution

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the record_name filename template to be enabled (a non-default recording-naming configuration) so that attacker-controlled Caller-ID values become part of the recording filename. The attacker embeds shell metacharacters such as $(...) in the SIP Caller-ID name or number when placing a call; command execution is deferred and only triggers when a privileged/authenticated user downloads multiple recordings as a ZIP, which invokes the vulnerable ln -s and zip shell commands. Limiting factors: non-default config dependency (record_name template), mandatory privileged-user interaction (the ZIP export), and resulting code execution confined to the web-server user's privileges.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional threat rather than a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P, score 7.7) tells a consistent story: although the initial injection point is reachable by an unauthenticated remote attacker (PR:N) who simply places a call with a malicious Caller-ID, successful code execution is gated by high attack complexity (AC:H), a specific attack requirement (AT:P), and passive user interaction (UI:P). The CWE-78 OS command injection and the confirmed patch diff (which adds escapeshellarg() around the ln -s and zip paths plus filename sanitization) corroborate the described mechanism, so the technical impact is high (VC/VI/VA:H - arbitrary commands as the web-server user). However, exploitation is NOT self-contained: the record_name filename template must be enabled (non-default) AND a privileged operator must subsequently export multiple recordings as a ZIP, which is why real-world risk is materially lower than the 7.7 headline suggests. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are present in the input - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the absence of exploitation telemetry means risk is driven by the preconditions, not by observed in-the-wild activity. Net: a real priority for FusionPBX operators who have the record_name template enabled, but a lower practical priority for default deployments.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker dials a FusionPBX-handled extension and sets their Caller-ID name or number to a payload containing shell metacharacters such as $(id). The call is recorded under the record_name filename template, and when a privileged user later bulk-downloads recordings as a ZIP, the unsanitized caller-ID-derived filename is passed to a shell ln -s / zip command, executing the attacker's commands as the web-server user. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis; the mechanism is confirmed only by the vendor patch diff and VulnCheck advisory.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 10, 2026

OS command injection in FusionPBX through 5.6.5 lets unauthenticated attackers inject shell metacharacters into the SIP Caller-ID name or number, which are written into recording filenames when the non-default record_name filename template is enabled, so that arbitrary commands execute as the web-server user once a privileged user exports multiple recordings as a ZIP. The CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) rates this 7.7, reflecting network reachability with high attack complexity and mandatory privileged-user interaction rather than an easily weaponized flaw; our independent assessment maps to CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. Exploitation requires the attacker to place calls carrying crafted Caller-ID values and then wait for an authenticated administrator to trigger the ZIP download; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no confirmed active exploitation (no CISA KEV listing).

RemediationAI

Apply the upstream vendor fix by updating FusionPBX to a release that includes commit 074a69310100f95171c67db62643cc2aac4f4d37, which sanitizes the download filename and passes all ln -s and zip arguments through escapeshellarg() (https://github.com/fusionpbx/fusionpbx/commit/074a69310100f95171c67db62643cc2aac4f4d37); because the reference is a source commit rather than a tagged release, verify the changelog of the candidate build to confirm the patched call_recordings.php is present. If upgrading immediately is not possible, disable the record_name filename template so user-supplied Caller-ID data no longer flows into recording filenames - this removes the injection vector at the cost of losing custom recording-naming conventions and leaving the underlying missing-escaping bug in place. Additionally, restrict who can trigger bulk recording ZIP exports (the privileged action required to fire the payload), and consider limiting inbound SIP exposure or Caller-ID trust boundaries, though these are compensating controls with meaningful operational trade-offs and do not fully eliminate the risk where export functionality must remain available.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic OS command injection (CWE-78) in the PHP class app/call_recordings/resources/classes/call_recordings.php. In the download() method, FusionPBX builds shell commands - an 'ln -s' to create a symbolic link with a custom filename and a 'passthru("zip -qj - ...")' to stream multiple recordings as a ZIP archive - by concatenating path strings directly into the command line without escaping. When the record_name filename template is configured, the attacker-controlled Caller-ID name/number captured during call setup becomes part of the downloaded recording filename, so embedded shell metacharacters such as $(...) are interpreted by the shell. The vulnerability is therefore a two-stage, deferred-execution chain: unauthenticated SIP call placement plants the payload in stored recording metadata, and a later privileged ZIP export executes it via ln/zip under the web server's user context. The vendor commit 074a69310100f95171c67db62643cc2aac4f4d37 addresses the root cause by sanitizing the download filename with a Unicode-aware preg_replace whitelist (letters, digits, underscore, hyphen, dot), collapsing '..' sequences and trimming leading/trailing dots to block traversal, and by wrapping both the symlink targets and every ZIP path in escapeshellarg(). The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:fusionpbx:fusionpbx:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, confirming all FusionPBX releases up to and including 5.6.5 are impacted.

DescriptionCVE.org

FusionPBX through 5.6.5 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in call_recordings::download() that allows unauthenticated attackers to execute commands by placing calls with malicious caller ID values. When the record_name filename template is enabled, attackers can embed shell metacharacters like $(...) in the Caller-ID name or number, executing commands as the web server user once a privileged user downloads multiple recordings as a ZIP.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

FusionPBX versions up to 5.6.5 contain a high-severity command injection flaw (CVE-2026-108161) that could allow unauthenticated attackers to compromise the web server, but only when a non-default recording filename template is enabled and an administrator exports recordings. This scenario requires specific configuration and privileged user interaction, making exploitation complex; no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Organizations using FusionPBX with this configuration should prioritize patching to prevent potential data breaches or service disruption.
