| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated non-administrator Contao backend user whose user group is assigned the preview_link module; affected versions are 5.7.1 through 5.7.11. Given those prerequisites, exploitation is deterministic in default configurations because the mis-registered voter is silently dropped at container compile time and tl_preview_link has no createdBy SQL filter - no special setting must be toggled on. The limiting factors are the backend-account requirement and the preview_link module grant: installations with only administrator backend users, or that never assign the preview_link module to non-admin groups, are not exposed. Impact is confined to reading preview links and viewing unpublished pages; modifying or deleting other users' links is blocked by DcaPermissionVoter. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, correctly rated low-to-medium rather than critical. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N = 4.3) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable backend, low complexity, and crucially PR:L - the attacker must already hold an authenticated non-admin backend account whose group includes the preview_link module. This privilege prerequisite is the single largest limiter and keeps real-world risk contained to environments that provision multiple backend users with that module. Impact is confidentiality-only (C:L) and bounded: the advisory explicitly states (and verified in the reporter's lab via DcaPermissionVoter) that editing or deleting foreign preview links is NOT possible, so I:N/A:N are appropriate. No EPSS score, KEV listing, POC, or SSVC decision data was supplied in the input, so exploitation-probability and automatability signals cannot be weighed - absence of these is not evidence of low interest, but there is also no evidence of active exploitation. The root cause is unusually reliable once prerequisites are met: a class-name typo in services.yaml (PreviewAccessVoter vs shipped PreviewVoter) causes Symfony to silently drop the voter, so the ownership check never runs and there is no compensating SQL createdBy filter. Net: a real, deterministic authorization-bypass worth patching, but gated behind an authenticated multi-user backend configuration, which keeps it well below critical. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A disgruntled or compromised low-privilege Contao editor whose group was granted the preview_link module opens the preview links list in the backend and sees every preview link on the installation, including those created by administrators. They copy an already-signed share URL for an embargoed page and open it (or forward it), viewing the unpublished content via showUnpublished despite having no permission on that page. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; exploitation requires only ordinary backend interaction and no special tooling. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
Improper access control in Contao CMS 5.7.1 through 5.7.11 lets an authenticated non-administrator backend user whose group holds the preview_link module list every tl_preview_link record and lift other users' already-signed share URLs, then follow them to view unpublished or embargoed pages without holding page permission. The failure is deterministic in default configurations because a service-registration typo silently drops the ownership voter at container compile time and no createdBy SQL filter compensates, so no special setting has to be toggled on; exposure depends on having a non-admin backend account with the preview_link module granted. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, 4.3) rates it low-to-medium, and the issue is fixed in 5.7.12.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade composer/contao/core-bundle to 5.7.12 (Contao 5.7.12), which is referenced by the release at https://github.com/contao/contao/releases/tag/5.7.12 and the advisory at https://github.com/contao/contao/security/advisories/GHSA-q6wp-fr43-gm9v. The fix, contained in commit https://github.com/contao/contao/commit/6b483d380a4b2dc61432c4c697e411508f93bf91, corrects the service identifier and class name in core-bundle/config/services.yaml (contao.security.data_container.preview_access_voter / PreviewAccessVoter to contao.security.data_container.preview_voter / PreviewVoter) so the voter is autoconfigured and registered again, and additionally adds a createdBy filter to tl_preview_link listing in PreviewLinkListener::allowUndo() so non-admin users only see their own records - both halves should be present, since the SQL filter alone would not restore the ownership check. If immediate upgrade is not possible, the most direct compensating control is to remove the preview_link module from all non-administrator backend user groups; the trade-off is that legitimate editors lose the ability to create and manage preview links entirely, and any links they already created remain valid until they expire or are deleted by an administrator. Administrators can also purge existing tl_preview_link rows created by non-admin users, but that invalidates legitimate share URLs and is disruptive. Because the served preview pages rely on already-signed URLs, WAF or reverse-proxy filtering of preview parameters is unreliable and not a substitute for the upgrade; the residual risk of deploying only the module-removal workaround is that a future group reconfiguration could silently reopen the exposure. No vendor-released patch beyond 5.7.12 is needed, and administrators should confirm that any back-ported or forked service configuration does not reintroduce the PreviewAccessVoter class name.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is a string mismatch in dependency-injection configuration: core-bundle/config/services.yaml registers the preview access voter under the class Contao\CoreBundle\Security\Voter\DataContainer\PreviewAccessVoter, while the class actually shipped on disk is Contao\CoreBundle\Security\Voter\DataContainer\PreviewVoter. Symfony resolves the configured class with getReflectionClass($class, false), receives null instead of throwing, silently skips the interface-based autoconfiguration that would have tagged the service as a voter, and drops the resulting untagged private service when the container is compiled. The application boots with no warning, so the ownership rule in PreviewVoter::hasAccess() - the check that should restrict a user to their own preview links - is never executed. This maps to CWE-639 (Authorization Bypass Through User-Controlled Key): because tl_preview_link has no compensating SQL filter on createdBy, any non-administrator backend user whose group is granted the preview_link module reads all preview link records in the DataContainer list. The stored values include fully signed share URLs, and following one yields front-end preview of the target page with showUnpublished and with no page-permission check, exposing unpublished content both to that user and to anyone they forward the URL to. The vulnerability class is specific to Symfony's autoconfiguration mechanics combined with a missing data-layer authorization filter rather than a conventional injection or memory-safety flaw.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Contao is an Open Source CMS. From version 5.7.1 until 5.7.12, core-bundle/config/services.yaml registers the preview access voter as Contao\CoreBundle\Security\Voter\DataContainer\PreviewAccessVoter although the shipped class is PreviewVoter. Symfony therefore omits voter autoconfiguration and removes the private service, so PreviewVoter::hasAccess() never enforces ownership. A non-admin backend user with the preview_link module can list every tl_preview_link record, obtain signed share URLs created by other users, and use them to view unpublished pages with showUnpublished despite lacking page permission. The advisory does not establish editing or deletion of foreign links. This issue is fixed in version 5.7.12.
