Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires BOTH: (1) the Ultimate Multisite checkout form configured WITHOUT a password field, i.e. using auto-generated passwords, and (2) a target account (e.g. a Network Super Admin) that has NO existing customer record in the plugin. The attacker must also know the target's exact email address. The core flaw is that the duplicate-account check normalizes the submitted email differently from the lookup used to create the customer, so a logged-out checkout links to and authenticates as the matching existing WordPress account without any authentication. LIMITING FACTORS: sites using password-protected checkout are not affected; targets who already have a plugin customer record are not exploitable; and the bug exists specifically in versions up to and including 2.16.1 and is NOT fixed by the 2.15.1 patch for CVE-2026-75957 - only 2.17.0 resolves it.

Impact

Multiple signals point to genuine high priority, with some caveats. The input CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 9.8) describes a fully remote, unauthenticated authentication bypass (CWE-287) that yields complete account takeover - including the Network Super Admin - which in a WordPress multisite is effectively total compromise of the whole network. A vendor patch (2.17.0) is confirmed available and the issue was reported by a credible researcher source (WPScan). However, several escalating signals are MISSING from the input: no EPSS probability is provided, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no public proof-of-concept is indicated, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' There is also a notable tension between the raw 9.8 score and the stated exploitation conditions: the description explicitly requires a non-default deployment (a checkout form configured WITHOUT a password field, i.e. auto-generated passwords) AND a target account that has no existing customer record in the plugin. These are prerequisites outside the attacker's control, which argues the real-world AC:L in the input understates attack complexity - this is why my independent assessment lowers it to AC:H. Net: treat as a high-urgency patch for any site actually running the affected plugin in the vulnerable configuration, but recognize that environments using password-protected checkout, or where admins already have customer records, are not exploitable. This is a real priority where the preconditions are met, not a blanket 9.8-everywhere emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker who knows the email address of a Network Super Admin (often discoverable from author pages, WHOIS, or public posts) submits a logged-out checkout on a site whose checkout form is configured for auto-generated passwords (no password field). Because the plugin's duplicate-account check normalizes the email differently than the lookup used to create the customer, the flow links to and logs the attacker in as that existing WordPress account. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the technique is fully described in the WPScan advisory.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026

Authentication bypass in the Ultimate Multisite WordPress plugin before 2.17.0 lets an unauthenticated remote attacker (CVSS PR:N) log in as any existing WordPress account, including a Network Super Admin, whose email address they know - but only on sites whose checkout form is configured without a password field and only when the target account has no existing Ultimate Multisite customer record. The root cause is that the plugin's duplicate-account check normalizes the submitted email address differently from the lookup used to create the customer, so a logged-out checkout silently links to and authenticates as the matching existing WordPress user. The 2.15.1 fix for CVE-2026-75957 does not remediate this bypass; vendor-released patch 2.17.0 is available, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis (no CISA KEV entry). Vendor CVSS is 9.8, though our independent assessment applies AC:H (8.1) because both the password-less checkout configuration and the absence of a pre-existing customer record are required.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: 2.17.0 - upgrade Ultimate Multisite to 2.17.0 or later; do not rely on 2.15.1, which fixes CVE-2026-75957 but leaves this bypass reachable in all versions up to and including 2.16.1. Where immediate upgrade is not possible, require a password field on the checkout form so auto-generated-password checkout cannot be used - the trade-off is that this changes the customer registration UX and may break automated provisioning flows that depend on auto-generated credentials. As a second compensating control, pre-create Ultimate Multisite customer records for all privileged accounts, especially Network Super Admins, so the "target has no existing customer record" precondition fails; the trade-off is that this adds or alters customer/billing data for administrative users and must be maintained as new privileged accounts are added. Restrict or monitor public access to checkout endpoints and alert on account-linking events tied to privileged email addresses. Technical ContextAI · show details

This is an improper authentication flaw (CWE-287) in the Ultimate Multisite WordPress plugin's customer/checkout handling. When a logged-out user completes a checkout without a password field (i.e., the plugin auto-generates the password), the plugin checks whether an account already exists for the submitted email address; that duplicate-account check applies one form of email normalization, while the subsequent customer-record lookup and account-linking logic applies a different normalization. The mismatch allows an attacker to submit a known victim email in a form that evades the duplicate check yet still matches the existing WordPress account during linking, causing the checkout session to be attached to - and authenticated as - that account, without any credential verification. The vulnerable path is only reachable when the checkout form omits the password field (auto-generated passwords) and when the targeted account has no pre-existing customer record in the plugin. The issue persists through 2.16.1 and is not addressed by the earlier 2.15.1 fix for CVE-2026-75957, since the normalization inconsistency lives in a distinct code path.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Ultimate Multisite WordPress plugin before 2.17.0 does not require authentication before a logged-out checkout is linked to, and logged in as, an existing WordPress account matching the submitted email address, and its duplicate-account check normalizes that address differently from the lookup used to create the customer, so an unauthenticated attacker can log in as any existing user, including a Network Super Admin, whose email address they know. This bypass is not addressed by the 2.15.1 fix for CVE-2026-75957 and remains exploitable in all versions up to and including 2.16.1, the releases that fix was expected to cover. Exploitation requires a checkout form configured without a password field (auto-generated password) and a target account that has no existing customer record in the Ultimate Multisite WordPress plugin before 2.17.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Ultimate Multisite WordPress plugin versions prior to 2.17.0 contain a critical authentication bypass that allows an unauthenticated attacker to take over any existing WordPress account, including Network Super Admin, on multisite networks configured with a password-less checkout form when the targeted account has no prior customer record. A successful exploit grants full control of the WordPress network and every site hosted within it, creating a severe risk to data confidentiality, integrity, and availability across the entire multi-tenant environment. While there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, the vendor-released patch 2.17.0 must be treated as an urgent remediation priority.
