Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target to use VisiData's unzip_http RemoteZipFile extract functionality and to open/extract an attacker-supplied crafted .zip file reached via an attacker-provided URL - the feature must be actively invoked by the victim. The primary limiting factors are: required user interaction (the victim must open the malicious remote archive and perform an extract), and that the finding is tied specifically to the development commit 38b21f78, so users on other releases may not be affected. There is no authentication barrier for the attacker (they merely supply the URL/archive), but no remote server component is exposed - the trigger is client-side within the user's VisiData session.

Impact

This is a moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N, base 6.5) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw whose severity is capped by two factors: it requires user interaction (UI:R) and affects only integrity (I:H via arbitrary file write), with no confidentiality or availability impact. No EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV (no active-exploitation signal), and no public exploit was indicated in the supplied data - so this is credible-but-theoretical rather than an in-the-wild threat. The strongest trust signal is that it was reported by Cisco Talos, a reputable research group, which raises confidence in the technical finding even though no independent POC was supplied. Important caveat: the affected version is listed only as a development commit (dev, 38b21f78), not a tagged release, so real-world exposure of production users is uncertain and the CPE wildcard (visidata:*) likely overstates the range of genuinely affected versions - verify the exact fixed/affected versions with the Talos advisory and the VisiData maintainers. An arbitrary file write can escalate to code execution if an attacker overwrites a startup script or config, which should be weighed when prioritizing.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker hosts or links a specially crafted .zip archive and lures a VisiData user into opening it via the unzip_http RemoteZipFile feature (e.g., by providing a crafted URL). When the user extracts a file, path traversal entries in the archive cause VisiData to write attacker-controlled content outside the intended directory, potentially overwriting sensitive files or dropping executable/startup scripts. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data, and the attack hinges on the victim actively opening the attacker-supplied resource.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026

Arbitrary file write via path traversal in VisiData's unzip_http RemoteZipFile extraction routine allows an attacker who supplies a crafted .zip archive over a URL to write files outside the intended extraction directory on the victim's machine. The flaw is tied to the development commit 38b21f78 (CWE-22) and is rated CVSS 3.1 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N); no privileges are required on the attacker's side, but the victim must open the attacker-provided remote archive and explicitly invoke the extract functionality. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so this is a moderate-priority issue contingent on user interaction rather than an actively exploited emergency.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; the only reference is the Talos report at https://talosintelligence.com/vulnerability_reports/TALOS-2026-2414, so treat any eventual upstream commit or release note for VisiData's unzip_http/RemoteZipFile extract path as the authoritative fix and confirm the commit range against 38b21f78 before upgrading. Until a fix is confirmed, the most direct compensating control is to stop using the unzip_http RemoteZipFile extract feature on archives reached via untrusted or external URLs: download and inspect the .zip manually (for example, list member paths and reject any containing ../ or absolute components) and extract with a hardened tool, accepting the operational trade-off of losing VisiData's direct remote-extraction convenience. Run VisiData under a least-privilege account and inside a container, sandbox, or directory tree where writes outside the intended working folder are blocked, which limits the blast radius of a traversal write but does not remove the traversal itself. If the feature must remain available, restrict extraction targets to a dedicated scratch directory and monitor it for unexpected files. Users on non-dev builds should verify whether their VisiData version includes commit 38b21f78, since builds without it are not confirmed to be affected.

Technical ContextAI · show details

VisiData is a Python-based terminal data-exploration tool that can open remote archives through its unzip_http module, exposing a RemoteZipFile class whose extract routine unpacks remote .zip contents to local disk. The root cause is CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory, i.e. path traversal): archive members are extracted without adequately normalizing or validating entry names, so an attacker-crafted .zip containing entries with ../ sequences (or absolute paths) causes the extracted file to be written outside the intended destination directory. Because the archive is fetched from an attacker-controlled URL, the attacker influences both the transport source and the member names. The impact is confined to integrity (I:H) of the local filesystem on the client running VisiData; there is no server-side component exposed, and confidentiality/availability are unaffected per the assessed vector. The affected artifact is the development build at commit 38b21f78; the CPE entry cpe:2.3:a:visidata:visidata:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is a version-wildcard, so version-scoped exposure depends on whether a given build includes the vulnerable commit.
