The duplicate endpoint requires an authenticated caller (PR:L) over the network with low complexity; primary impact is disclosure of access-controlled field values (C:H) plus writing create-rejected values (I:L), no availability impact.

Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. In versions from 3.0.0 before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34, the duplicate operation copies values from a source document even when a field is hidden or its access.read or access.create rule rejects that value for the caller. The disableDuplicate setting does not prevent this access-control bypass. This issue is fixed in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.

AnalysisAI
Field-level access control can be bypassed in Payload CMS's document duplicate operation, letting a caller with access to the duplicate endpoint copy hidden or read/create-restricted values from a source document into a newly created document - potentially exposing secrets such as tokens or credentials stored in access-controlled fields. The issue affects the npm payload package from 3.0.0 up to (but not including) 3.90.0, and 4.0.0 canary releases before 4.0.0-canary.34; the disableDuplicate setting, which is on by default for auth collections, did not actually block the operation before the fix. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | The attacker must be an authenticated caller with access to a collection's duplicate operation (POST /:id/duplicate) and must target a collection containing fields that are hidden or protected by access.read/access.create rules the caller does not satisfy. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The vendor-assigned CVSS 4.0 score is 9.3 (Critical) with a vector of AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N, implying remote, low-complexity, unauthenticated exploitation. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade the `payload` package to 3.90.0 or later for the 3.x line, or to 4.0.0-canary.34 or later for canary deployments - vendor-released patches per GHSA-vc4h-q48j-5hcx (https://github.com/payloadcms/payload/security/advisories/GHSA-vc4h-q48j-5hcx) and commit 099ef12e (https://github.com/payloadcms/payload/commit/099ef12e2682f076aa8e8d0ccb790536b4e1027f), which now enforce `disableDuplicate` at the endpoint level and add a per-field `disableDuplicate` option. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all Payload CMS deployments and confirm exact versions in production, treating any instance below payload 3.90.0 or below 4.0.0-canary.34 as exposed; note that the disableDuplicate setting does not block the operation on unpatched releases and must not be counted as a mitigation, and review audit or application logs for duplicate-endpoint activity against collections that hold tokens, credentials, or other access-restricted fields. …
