| Impact | This is a medium-severity open redirect (CWE-601) in Payload CMS authentication flows, and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, 6.1) correctly reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw whose exploitation nonetheless depends on victim interaction (UI:R) and yields only limited confidentiality/integrity impact via redirection to an attacker-controlled destination - not direct code execution or data disclosure on the server. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'; absence of these signals is expected for a freshly disclosed GHSA and should not be read as either high or low exploitation likelihood on its own. Realistically this is a moderate-priority, patch-in-normal-cycle issue rather than an emergency: open redirects are primarily useful as a phishing/credential-harvesting primitive and require social engineering to land. The main caveat is that the fix commit bundles the open-redirect remediation (getSafeRedirect) together with unrelated sort-query validation changes, so defenders should rely on the version numbers, not a single isolated line, when verifying the fix. |

Open redirect in Payload CMS authentication flows lets an attacker craft a link that, once a guest user authenticates, forwards that user to an untrusted external destination. Affected packages are npm/payload from 3.40.0 up to (but excluding) 3.88.0 and the 4.0.0 canary line below 4.0.0-canary.27, plus the companion @payloadcms/next package (>= 3.31.0, < 3.88.0 and >= 4.0.0-canary.0, < 4.0.0-canary.27). Per the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, 6.1) exploitation is unauthenticated but requires victim interaction, and it only succeeds on deployments that actually pass a user-controlled redirect value through their login or account-creation flow; there is no confirmed active exploitation and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Payload packages to >= 3.88.0, or for the 4.x canary line to >= 4.0.0-canary.27; both npm/payload and @payloadcms/next must be brought to the fixed version, since the advisory lists them as separate affected ranges. Where immediate upgrading is not possible, the vendor's documented workaround is to stop trusting user-controlled redirect values in authentication flows: strip the redirect parameter entirely or constrain it to a known list of local paths, and adopt the getSafeRedirect helper from payload/shared (with an explicit local fallback such as '/account') as the patch commit does for the example login and create-account forms. The trade-off is that legitimate deep-link-after-login behaviour is lost or narrowed to allowlisted paths, but this closes the open-redirect vector and prevents the crafted link from landing the newly authenticated user on an attacker-controlled site; note this only matters for deployments that actually consume a redirect parameter in their auth UI, so auditing your own custom auth forms for searchParams.get('redirect') followed by an unvalidated navigation is the practical first step. Details are in the vendor advisory at https://github.com/payloadcms/payload/security/advisories/GHSA-w84c-53h3-mc2g.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Payload is an open-source Node.js/Next.js headless CMS distributed as the npm packages payload and @payloadcms/next, and the flaw is a classic CWE-601 URL redirection to untrusted site ('open redirect'). The vulnerable pattern is application code that reads a redirect query-string parameter (searchParams.get('redirect')) during authentication and then navigates to it (router.push) without validating that the destination is a local path. The upstream fix introduces a getSafeRedirect helper exported from payload/shared and applies it to the example login and create-account forms so an attacker-supplied redirect is replaced by a known-good fallback when it does not resolve to a trusted destination. Because the redirect is a client-side navigation triggered after credentials are accepted, the consequence is phishing and post-authentication traffic redirection rather than server compromise; the same commit also carries unrelated sort-query validation changes (validateSortQuery) that should not be read as part of this redirect issue.

DescriptionCVE.org
Impact
Under certain conditions, an attacker can craft a redirect link that sends a guest user to an untrusted destination after authenticating.
Patches
Users should upgrade Payload packages to >= 3.88.0 or >= 4.0.0-canary.27.
Workarounds
Upgrading is recommended. Until then, remove user-controlled redirect values from authentication flows or restrict them to known local paths.
