| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated account holding the project 'configure' ACL (PR:L) for at least one project; the attacker then abuses the file resource model source by setting resources.source.N.config.file to an arbitrary absolute path and retrieving it via the editProjectNodeSourceFile or apiSourceGetContent endpoint. The limiting factors are: valid credentials plus the configure permission (not available to anonymous or read-only users), and that pre-fix builds (before 6.2.0) perform no canonicalization/base-path check on the configured file path. There is no user-interaction requirement and no non-default configuration needed - the flaw is present in the default FileResourceModelSource behavior - so the main real-world constraint is how broadly the project-configure role is delegated. |
| Impact | This is a credible, moderately-serious information-disclosure flaw rather than a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) confirms a network-reachable, low-complexity attack but one that requires an authenticated principal already holding the project 'configure' ACL (PR:L) - not an anonymous internet attacker. Impact is scoped to confidentiality only (VC:H, VI:N/VA:N), consistent with arbitrary file read. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC is present in the supplied intelligence, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation; the primary risk driver is the sensitivity of what a file read exposes (DB passwords, LDAP bind credentials, cross-project data) combined with the fact that the required privilege - project configure - is a role often delegated fairly broadly in Rundeck installations. Net priority: patch promptly where Rundeck is internet-exposed or where configure ACLs are widely granted, but treat it as a trusted-insider / privilege-boundary-escalation issue, not an unauthenticated RCE. Note: the reporter is VulnCheck and a vendor patch exists, but no independent confirmation of in-the-wild use is available. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user who has been granted only the project 'configure' ACL (e.g. a team member allowed to edit node sources) edits the file resource model source and sets resources.source.N.config.file to an absolute path such as /etc/rundeck/rundeck-config.properties or another project's directory. They then call editProjectNodeSourceFile or the apiSourceGetContent endpoint to read the file back, harvesting database passwords, LDAP bind credentials, or other projects' data. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the technique is straightforward to reproduce from the description. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 06, 2026
Arbitrary file read in Rundeck before 6.2.0 lets an authenticated user who holds only the project 'configure' ACL read any file on the server by setting the resources.source.N.config.file property to an absolute path outside the project directory, then retrieving the contents through the editProjectNodeSourceFile or apiSourceGetContent endpoints. Recoverable data includes database passwords, LDAP bind credentials and configuration belonging to other projects, making this a meaningful lateral-movement aid for anyone with delegated project administration rights; there is no user-interaction requirement and no non-default configuration needed. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the flaw is not confirmed as actively exploited (no CISA KEV listing), but VulnCheck reported it and the vendor-released fix ships in Rundeck 6.2.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Rundeck 6.2.0 or later - vendor-released patch: 6.2.0 (release notes at https://github.com/rundeck/rundeck/releases/tag/v6.2.0), which incorporates the validation introduced by PR https://github.com/rundeck/rundeck/pull/10437 and commits a462982aa22bf350c9e121d213283ffaa7994b4e and 5ec3d0ad2ef19c2bf8f206f27d693ba8bf3337a4; if you cannot upgrade immediately, note that the commits are upstream fixes and a released patched build for older branches is not independently confirmed, so treat backporting as a last resort. Because exploitation requires an authenticated principal holding only the project 'configure' ACL, the highest-value compensating control is tightening that authorization: audit which roles/groups carry project configure (including the default project-admin style roles that may be broadly mapped from LDAP/SSO), remove it from read-only or operator-level users, and restrict network access to the node-source editing UI and the apiSourceGetContent API endpoint to trusted administrative networks or reverse-proxy allowlists - the trade-off is that legitimate project owners lose self-service node-source management and must go through a central team. Once on 6.2.0 you can additionally constrain file sources with the resourceModelSource.file.allowedBasePaths property in rundeck-config.properties, listing only comma-separated absolute base directories that are acceptable; be aware this is a post-fix safeguard (pre-6.2.0 ignores it) and that a too-narrow allowlist will break existing file-based node sources. Finally, rotate any credentials that a low-privileged configure user could plausibly have read - database passwords, LDAP bind accounts and any secrets co-located on the Rundeck host - since file read alone can expose them.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw lives in Rundeck's core resource model layer (CWE-22, path traversal) in FileResourceModelSource, the Java class that loads node inventory from a file. A project's resource source can be configured with resources.source.N.config.file pointing at a node file, and pre-6.2.0 code passed that value straight to the filesystem without canonicalizing it or checking it against a permitted base directory. Because no base-path restriction existed, any absolute path - /etc/passwd, the Rundeck configuration or realm files, or another project's data directory - was accepted, and the file content was surfaced back to the caller via the editProjectNodeSourceFile action or the apiSourceGetContent endpoint. The upstream fix (GitHub PR rundeck/rundeck#10437, commits a462982aa and 5ec3d0a) adds a validateWriteableSource hook to the WriteableModelSource interface and implements it in FileResourceModelSource: the configured path is canonicalized (defeating ../ sequences and symlinks), compared using Path.startsWith semantics against the project base directory (framework.getFrameworkProjectsBaseDir()/<project>), and otherwise rejected unless it falls under a comma-separated allowlist configured via the resourceModelSource.file.allowedBasePaths property in rundeck-config.properties. The patch also creates missing parent directories when writing a node file and deliberately suppresses IOException details in error messages so path information is not leaked back to the attacker.

DescriptionCVE.org
Rundeck before 6.2.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows users holding only the project configure ACL to read arbitrary server files by setting resources.source.N.config.file to any absolute path. Attackers can retrieve file contents through editProjectNodeSourceFile or the apiSourceGetContent endpoint to obtain database passwords, LDAP bind credentials, and other projects' data.
Executive ViewAI
Rundeck deployments running versions earlier than 6.2.0 carry a file-read flaw that lets a user with delegated project-administration rights copy sensitive credentials - database passwords and LDAP bind accounts belonging to other teams - off the server. Because that access looks legitimate, the flaw can quietly enable lateral movement across projects and into connected data stores, and it affects any organization that delegates Rundeck project ownership. Leadership should treat this as a credential-exposure and insider-risk issue rather than a routine software defect.
