MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the attacker to possess at least one valid share link to the target file - even the most restrictive, zero-page, team-only link suffices to authenticate the get-view-only-bundle RPC call. Escalation only yields additional access when the same file has multiple share links with differing scopes; a file with a single share link exposes only its own token. No account login, user interaction, or non-default configuration is needed beyond holding a share-link URL. The key limiting factor is that the attacker must be in possession of a share link and that the gain is bounded to the specific file's other share links and their page/comment/inspect scopes. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity broken-authorization issue (CWE-862), not a high-urgency priority. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (5.3, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low-complexity, and formally 'unauthenticated' because a share link is a capability URL rather than an account credential. Impact is confidentiality-only and limited (C:L) - disclosure of other share links' secret IDs, page scopes, and comment/inspect permissions, enabling token replay to reach pages outside the attacker's original share; there is no integrity or availability impact. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, KEV listing, or packaged POC was provided in the input, so exploitation probability signals are absent rather than low - the only exploitation artifact is a regression test embedded in the fix commit. The CVSS PR:N label and the description's 'A holder of a restrictive link' phrasing are not contradictory, but note the practical precondition: the attacker must already possess a valid (even if restrictive) share link, so this is not reachable by a fully anonymous Internet attacker against an arbitrary file. Overall: a real data-exposure flaw worth patching, but the restricted impact and the share-link precondition place it below critical-triage urgency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker is given (or guesses access to) a restrictive, view-only Penpot share link for a file. They call the unauthenticated get-view-only-bundle RPC, which returns every share-link row for that file - including the secret IDs and broader scopes of more permissive links - and then replay a more permissive token to view pages, comments, and inspection data that were never included in their original share. No public weaponized exploit exists, though the fix commit includes a regression test that demonstrates the disclosure behavior. Attack vector is network with low complexity (AV:N/AC:L), requiring no user interaction. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026
Information disclosure and broken authorization in Penpot before 2.18.0 allow an unauthenticated caller who holds any valid share link to the get-view-only-bundle RPC to retrieve all share-link rows for the same file, including secret IDs and page, comment, and inspect scopes. The issue is rated CVSS 5.3 (CWE-862) and is fixed in 2.18.0; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires possession of a share-link URL plus multiple differently scoped links on the same file to yield additional access.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Penpot to 2.18.0 or later; the vendor-released patch is version 2.18.0, and the exact upstream fix is commit 15195b3bbbbf2911b24007ad42453d264a2774d4. Apply the release from https://github.com/penpot/penpot/releases/tag/2.18.0 and review the advisory at https://github.com/penpot/penpot/security/advisories/GHSA-w8mf-4x22-24gg. If immediate patching is not possible, avoid creating multiple share links with differing page, comment, and inspect scopes for the same file, because the leak only yields additional access when a more permissive link exists; rotate or delete unused and overly permissive share links, and treat all share-link URLs as sensitive. These workarounds reduce exposure but do not fix the underlying authorization flaw and may limit legitimate sharing workflows.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected component is Penpot's backend RPC method get-view-only-bundle in backend/src/app/rpc/commands/viewer.clj, implemented in Clojure. The handler queried the share-link table for the file and returned every row, decoding the pages pgarray and removing deprecated flags, without filtering results to the share-id used for authentication. The fix in commit 15195b3bbbbf2911b24007ad42453d264a2774d4 adds share-id to the destructured params and, when perms type is :share-link, filters the returned links to only the row whose id matches the caller's share-id. This is a CWE-862 Missing Authorization flaw: authentication as a share-link holder succeeds, but authorization to view other share-link records is not enforced. CPE cpe:2.3:a:penpot:penpot:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies Penpot as the affected product.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Penpot is an open-source design and prototyping platform. Prior to 2.18.0, the unauthenticated get-view-only-bundle RPC returns every share-link row for a file even when the caller authenticated with only one scoped share link. A holder of a restrictive link can obtain other links' secret IDs, page scopes, comment permissions, and inspection permissions, then replay a more permissive token to access page data that was not included in the original share. This issue is fixed in version 2.18.0.
