Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated account that has editor (edit) permission on the specific target file - typically a team member with the :editor role - so it cannot be exploited by anonymous or view-only users. The attacker must also know (or discover) the UUID of a share-link; file editors can obtain these IDs from the file's view-only bundle, which lists existing share-links. It affects the default behavior of the standard share-link feature, so no special or non-default configuration is needed. Limiting factors: attacker must be an existing collaborator with edit rights (not external/anonymous), impact is confined to deleting share-links and revoking external reviewer access, and there is no confidentiality loss or code execution. Fixed in 2.18.0, which adds an owner-or-admin check.

Impact

This is a medium-severity (CVSS 5.4) broken-access-control / IDOR issue, and the real-world urgency is modest rather than critical. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:L) shows that although the attack is network-reachable, it is NOT unauthenticated: PR:L means the attacker must already hold editor permission on the target file, so the realistic threat actor is an existing team collaborator/insider rather than an anonymous internet attacker. No EPSS score was provided in the input, there is no CISA KEV listing, and no standalone public exploit was identified - so none of the 'high exploitation probability' signals are present. The impact is deliberately narrow (C:N, I:L, A:L): the flaw only allows deleting share-links created by others and revoking external reviewers' access, not data theft or code execution. Signals are internally consistent - a network-facing RPC that nonetheless requires authenticated edit rights - so there is no CVSS-vs-description conflict to flag. Bottom line: a legitimate authorization defect worth patching on a normal cycle, but not a drop-everything emergency; treat it as an insider/collaborator abuse risk, not mass exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated user who has been granted editor rights on a Penpot file (for example a contractor or team member) obtains the UUID of a share-link another user created and calls the delete-share-link RPC with it. Because the server only checked that the caller could edit the parent file, the link is deleted and the external reviewer who relied on it loses access. No public exploit tool is needed and no user interaction is required; the share-link IDs are discoverable to file editors via the file's view-only bundle.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 05, 2026

Authenticated editors on a Penpot file (prior to version 2.18.0) can delete share links that were created by other users, because the delete-share-link RPC only checks that the caller can edit the parent file and never verifies ownership of the specific share link. By supplying the UUID of a colleague's or owner's share link - IDs that editors can enumerate from the file's view-only bundle - a mid-privileged collaborator can revoke external reviewers' access and disrupt published viewing/inspection links. Rated CVSS 5.4 (broken access control, PR:L), this requires an existing edit-rights account rather than anonymous access, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis. Vendor-released patch: 2.18.0.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Penpot to version 2.18.0, the vendor-released fixed build, which adds the owner-or-admin authorization check to the delete-share-link RPC; the upstream advisory GHSA-8257-pm4f-cfhq, PR #11290, and commit 209aea83658f209c4189b531eeda0f3a638a0294 document the exact change, and the tagged release is at https://github.com/penpot/penpot/releases/tag/2.18.0. If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls include temporarily restricting the :editor role on sensitive files so only owners/admins collaborate (side effect: legitimate designers lose edit access), and auditing or regenerating existing share-link UUIDs since editors can enumerate them from the view-only bundle - though regeneration does not itself prevent deletion and only briefly disrupts external reviewers. Because the impact is limited to deleting share links and revoking external reviewer access (no data confidentiality loss or code execution), prioritizing the upgrade during the next maintenance window is a reasonable trade-off; monitor backend logs for :authorization / :not-share-link-owner events or unexpected deletion of share links as a detection signal once patched, and treat repeated delete-share-link calls from low-privileged accounts as suspicious. No vendor-released workaround short of the 2.18.0 upgrade fully closes the gap, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Penpot's backend is a Clojure service that exposes RPC commands, with share-link handling implemented in backend/src/app/rpc/commands/files_share.clj. The delete-share-link handler took a caller-supplied share-link ID, looked up the parent file, and validated only that the caller had edit permission on that file; it omitted any check tying the share link to its creator or requiring owner/administrator authority. This is a classic improper access control (CWE-284) / IDOR pattern in which an object-level authorization decision is made against the wrong resource (the file) instead of the target object (the share link). The upstream fix (PR #11290, commit 209aea83658f209c4189b531eeda0f3a638a0294) adds an explicit check via bfc/get-file-permissions that permits deletion only when the caller's profile-id matches the share link's owner-id OR the caller holds admin/owner permissions on the file - noting that :is-admin already subsumes :is-owner. The regression test suite (backend_tests/rpc_file_test.clj) now asserts that an editor is denied with an :authorization error while owner and admin deletion paths still succeed. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:penpot:penpot (all versions before 2.18.0) confirms every prior release of the self-hosted/open-source platform is affected; the same bug would surface in anyone running a Penpot backend build predating the fix.

DescriptionCVE.org

Penpot is an open-source design and prototyping platform. Prior to 2.18.0, the delete-share-link RPC retrieves a caller-selected share-link ID and verifies only that the caller can edit the parent file. It does not verify that the caller created the share link or has owner or administrator authority, allowing any file editor who knows a share-link UUID to delete links created by other users and revoke external reviewers' access. This issue is fixed in version 2.18.0.
