Improper authentication in the Burst Statistics - Simple WordPress Analytics (Google Analytics Alternative) plugin, in all versions up to and including 3.7.1, lets anyone holding a valid burst_share_token receive a genuine WordPress session cookie for the burst_statistics_viewer account because the maybe_load_shared_dashboard() handler calls wp_set_auth_cookie() for token-bearing visitors. Once authenticated as that account, an attacker can drive core's self-service /wp-json/wp/v2/users/me password-update endpoint - the plugin blocks Application Passwords for the burst_viewer role but never filters the endpoint or the edit_user capability - and set an attacker-chosen password, giving a permanent takeover of the limited-privilege (view_burst_statistics) account that survives share-token revocation, token expiration, and the plugin's daily cleanup_viewer_sessions() routine. Exposure is bounded: the CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, 4.3) is scored low-privilege specifically because a valid share token is a prerequisite, so sites that never generate or circulate share tokens are not reachable, and there is no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Burst Statistics to 3.7.2 (the fixed class-share-tokens.php ships in that tag), which is the only durable fix for CVE-2026-97343; verify the version in the WordPress Plugins screen and re-check that no copy of 3.7.1 or earlier remains in a stale or cached deployment. Until the upgrade is in place, revoke and stop generating burst_share_token values so no token can be exchanged for a wp_set_auth_cookie() session - the trade-off is that the public dashboard-sharing feature becomes unusable, so any legitimate viewer access must be provided another way such as a manual export or a separate, low-privilege account. Additionally, audit the burst_statistics_viewer account for unauthorized password or role changes (check the users table and recent user_updated activity), force a password reset on that account, and invalidate existing sessions, since a password set through /wp-json/wp/v2/users/me persists after token revocation, token expiration and the daily cleanup_viewer_sessions() routine. As a compensating control on sites that cannot upgrade immediately, restrict or block unauthenticated access to the /wp-json/wp/v2/users/me password-update route and consider filtering the edit_user capability for the burst_viewer role via a small mu-plugin; both measures carry the side effect of preventing legitimate self-service profile updates for accounts in that role and should be removed once 3.7.2 is applied. Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-287 (Improper Authentication): the plugin conflates possession of a share token with a legitimate, bounded viewing session but then issues a full WordPress authentication cookie via wp_set_auth_cookie() instead of a scoped, non-authenticating access mechanism. The vulnerable flow lives in the plugin's Share subsystem (includes/Admin/Share/Services/class-share-ui.php, includes/Admin/Share/Services/class-share-tokens.php, and includes/Admin/Share/class-share.php referenced at the 3.7.1 tag), with the private-role/Application-Password restriction reached through includes/class-burst.php. Because the plugin only disables Application Passwords for the burst_viewer role and does not restrict WordPress core's /wp-json/wp/v2/users/me password-update endpoint nor filter the edit_user capability for that account, core's built-in rule that any authenticated user may update their own profile stays fully in effect - turning a transient viewer session into persistent credential control on the burst_statistics_viewer account (capability view_burst_statistics). The CPE string cpe:2.3:a:burstbv:burst_statistics_-_simple_wordpress_analytics_(google_analytics_alternative):*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected component, and the reference to the 3.7.2 class-share-tokens.php file shows where the vendor reworked the token/session handling.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Burst Statistics - Simple WordPress Analytics (Google Analytics Alternative) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Improper Authentication leading to Account Persistence in all versions up to, and including, 3.7.1. This is due to the maybe_load_shared_dashboard() handler issuing a genuine WordPress session cookie for the burst_statistics_viewer account to any visitor presenting a valid share token via wp_set_auth_cookie(), while the plugin only blocks Application Passwords for the resulting burst_viewer role and does not restrict the core /wp-json/wp/v2/users/me password update endpoint or filter the edit_user capability for that account - leaving WordPress core's built-in rule that any authenticated user may update their own account fully in effect. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to set an attacker-chosen password on the burst_statistics_viewer WordPress account, constituting a permanent takeover of that limited-privilege (view_burst_statistics) account that persists through share-token revocation, share-token expiration, and execution of the plugin's daily cleanup_viewer_sessions() routine. Exploitation requires that the attacker have obtained a valid burst_share_token, such as one that has been shared publicly or distributed to an untrusted party.
