Exploitation Conditions

Attacker must hold a valid authenticated UTMStack session (CVSS PR:L - even a low-privilege account suffices; not an anonymous/default-config flaw). Exploitation is performed by supplying an attacker-controlled, unvalidated url parameter to GET /api/generate-pdf-report, which the web-pdf microservice fetches server-side. Realistic impact additionally requires that the server have network reachability to the targeted internal resource - the OpenSearch cluster, internal backend endpoints, or, for the highest-impact credential-theft path, a cloud instance-metadata service (169.254.169.254), which only applies to cloud-hosted deployments. Limiting factors: authentication is required, no code execution or data modification results (read/confidentiality-oriented SSRF only), and metadata-credential theft depends on the instance running in a cloud environment with metadata accessible.

Impact

This is a genuine but mid-tier risk best treated as a targeted/standard-priority patch rather than an emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) confirms network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation, but PR:L means it is NOT unauthenticated - an attacker needs a valid UTMStack account, which meaningfully limits mass exploitation. The 6.3 (Medium) score is driven by SC:H (high confidentiality impact on subsequent/internal systems) while VC/VI/VA are all N, which is consistent with a classic SSRF: the vulnerable app itself is not directly damaged, but it is weaponized to reach internal services (OpenSearch, backend endpoints) and, critically, the cloud instance-metadata service - a path to credential theft. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit/POC flag were provided, so there is no evidence of active or widespread exploitation; the finding comes from a VulnCheck advisory with a vendor patch. Key signals are therefore consistent (Medium CVSS, authenticated, no exploitation evidence) rather than conflicting. Caveat: the patch commit supplied in the input (4e7a727, InternalApiKeyFilter) explicitly references a DIFFERENT CVE (CVE-2026-82042) and does not contain the SSRF url-validation fix, so the exact code remediation for this specific CVE could not be verified from the provided evidence - verify the fix against vendor release v11.2.16.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged but authenticated UTMStack user sends a crafted GET /api/generate-pdf-report request with the url parameter pointing at the cloud instance-metadata endpoint (e.g. 169.254.169.254) or an internal OpenSearch URL. The web-pdf microservice fetches that internal resource and renders the response into the returned PDF, leaking cloud credentials or internal data back to the attacker. No public exploit code was identified, though VulnCheck published an advisory describing the flaw.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026

Server-side request forgery in UTMStack before 11.2.16 lets any authenticated user (even a low-privilege one) coerce the web-pdf microservice into fetching an arbitrary URL by supplying an unvalidated url parameter to GET /api/generate-pdf-report, with the fetched response rendered back into the returned PDF. A successful attack exposes internal-only resources the container can reach - backend APIs, the OpenSearch cluster, or a cloud instance-metadata endpoint (169.254.169.254) - making credential theft the highest-impact outcome on cloud-hosted deployments; there is no code execution, no data modification, and exploitation requires a valid UTMStack session (CVSS vector PR:L, so authentication is required). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not confirmed actively exploited (not in CISA KEV); the CVE carries a CVSS 4.0 score of 6.3, while our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N) rates it High, with real-world impact gated by the server's network reachability to the targeted internal resource and, for the metadata path, by the instance running in a cloud environment.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor fix: upgrade to UTMStack 11.2.16 or later (vendor-released patch: 11.2.16; release notes at https://github.com/UTMStack/UTMStack/releases/tag/v11.2.16, fix commit at https://github.com/utmstack/UTMStack/commit/4e7a727c3b8d8e2ad020d3b4f982a6d085dbecdd), and confirm the deployment's web-pdf microservice was actually rebuilt/restarted, since the vulnerable fetch logic lives in that container. If patching must be staged, the most effective compensating controls are network-scoped rather than application-level: (1) apply egress network policy/firewall rules on the web-pdf container blocking 169.254.0.0/16, loopback, RFC1918 admin ports, and the OpenSearch ports, allowing only the specific internal hosts the PDF service legitimately needs - trade-off is that any undeclared dependency of the PDF pipeline will fail and must be allowlisted; (2) if the instance relies on cloud metadata credentials, enforce IMDSv2 with a hop limit of 1 so the SSRF cannot retrieve tokens - trade-off is that legacy SDKs or agent code still using IMDSv1 will break and must be updated; (3) restrict GET /api/generate-pdf-report at the reverse proxy or application layer to a trusted administrative role and to users who genuinely need reporting - trade-off is loss of self-service reporting for ordinary analysts, and this does not fix the underlying missing URL validation; (4) as a detective control, log and alert on url parameter values in /api/generate-pdf-report requests that resolve to internal addresses or contain 169.254.169.254, localhost, or internal hostnames. Because the flaw is read-only (confidentiality impact only), rotating cloud instance credentials and internal API keys after any suspected exploitation is also warranted, particularly on cloud-hosted instances where metadata was reachable.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery): the PdfService.downloadPdf() method behind GET /api/generate-pdf-report accepts a caller-supplied url parameter and passes it to an outbound HTTP client without validating scheme, host, or resolved IP range, so there is no allowlist and no blocking of loopback, RFC1918, link-local (169.254.0.0/16), or cluster-internal addresses. UTMStack is a Java/Spring-based SIEM stack whose backend (packages under com.park.utmstack) orchestrates containerized microservices - a web-pdf renderer, agent-manager, event-processing plugins - alongside an OpenSearch cluster; because these components talk to each other over a flat internal container network with service-to-service trust, an SSRF fetch originating from the web-pdf container can reach administrative and data endpoints that are never intended to be user-visible, and the server-side response is then rendered into the PDF returned to the attacker, turning the SSRF into a data-exfiltration primitive rather than a blind request. The CPE record (cpe:2.3:a:utmstack:utmstack:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) is unversioned, so the affected range is defined by the vendor advisory and the v11.2.16 release rather than by CPE version bindings. Notably, the same release hardens the Utm-Internal-Key machine-to-machine filter (tracked separately as CVE-2026-82042), which in the affected code path granted full administrative authentication to any caller presenting the shared internal key on internal routes such as /api/elasticsearch/search and /api/utm-incidents; that hardening reduces the value of SSRF-reachable internal endpoints, but the SSRF itself is a distinct defect fixed in the 11.2.16 release line.

DescriptionCVE.org

UTMStack before 11.2.16 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability that allows authenticated attackers to make the server request arbitrary internal resources by supplying an unvalidated url parameter to the PdfService.downloadPdf() method exposed via GET /api/generate-pdf-report. Attackers can leverage this to force the web-pdf microservice to fetch internal backend endpoints, the OpenSearch cluster, or the cloud instance-metadata service, exposing sensitive internal data rendered into the returned PDF.
