The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that a Ghost staff user embed an attacker-controlled URL whose server returns a crafted oEmbed photo response; the malicious script is only stored and executed through Ghost's oEmbed photo-embedding feature. The attacker needs no Ghost account or privileges (PR:N), but cannot self-trigger the flaw - a staff member with content-editing access must perform the embed (UI:P), which limits exploitation to targeted social engineering rather than unauthenticated remote automation. Exploitation is further bounded to Ghost instances running versions 2.5.0 up to (not including) 6.64.0.

Impact

This is a credible, above-average-priority issue but not an emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P, score 8.6) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity stored XSS requiring passive user interaction, with high confidentiality and integrity impact to the vulnerable system (VC:H/VI:H) and no subsequent-system (scope) impact (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N). The real risk driver is impact rather than ease: the payload persists and executes in the Ghost editor, the published site, and newsletter emails, so successful exploitation can compromise staff admin sessions. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV and no public exploit code is referenced, so: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The UI:P requirement is a meaningful brake - an attacker cannot trigger this unilaterally; a staff user must embed the attacker-hosted URL - which argues against mass, automated exploitation and favors targeted social-engineering of content editors. A vendor patch is available, which raises priority for defenders because the fix path is clear. Net: patch promptly given the admin-session impact, but treat widespread opportunistic exploitation as unlikely absent an EPSS/KEV signal.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker stands up a web endpoint that returns a malicious oEmbed 'photo' response containing script. They socially engineer or trick a Ghost staff member into embedding that URL in a post; the untrusted script is stored and then executes in the editor, on the published site, and in newsletter emails, hijacking the staff admin session. No public exploit code is referenced, so: no public exploit identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026

Stored cross-site scripting (XSS) in Ghost CMS 2.5.0 through 6.63.x (before 6.64.0) lets an unauthenticated attacker inject malicious scripts into post content by hosting a crafted oEmbed photo response and persuading a content editor to embed its URL. The injected script executes in the Ghost editor, on published pages, and in newsletter emails, potentially compromising staff admin sessions. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis, and the vendor has released a patch in Ghost 6.64.0; the issue is considered credible but not an emergency because exploitation requires user interaction and targeted social engineering.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Ghost 6.64.0 or later; this is the vendor-released patch. If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable the oEmbed photo embedding feature or restrict oEmbed providers to an allowlist of trusted domains, though this may remove intended functionality. Additionally, audit existing post content for suspicious oEmbed embeds and remove any that reference untrusted domains. Consult the vendor advisory at https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/security/advisories/GHSA-v3xr-g6p2-fvgv for further guidance. Note that no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified, so the urgency is moderate, but the high impact on admin sessions and newsletters warrants prompt patching.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability arises from improper neutralization of user-controllable input in Ghost's oEmbed photo embedding feature. oEmbed is a standard for retrieving embeddable content (such as photos) from third-party URLs; Ghost fails to sanitize the photo response returned by an attacker-controlled oEmbed provider before storing it in post content, leading to persistent XSS (CWE-79). The affected component is the Ghost CMS (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:tryghost:ghost:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), versions 2.5.0 through 6.63.x. Attackers can host a malicious oEmbed endpoint that returns a crafted photo response containing script code, which is then saved as part of a post and rendered unsanitized in the editor, front-end pages, and newsletter emails.

DescriptionCVE.org

Ghost from 2.5.0 before 6.64.0 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows attackers to inject untrusted scripts into post content via oEmbed photo responses. Attackers can host malicious oEmbed photo responses so that embedding their URL stores scripts that run in the Ghost editor, published site, and newsletter emails, compromising staff admin sessions.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Ghost CMS versions 2.5.0 through 6.63.x are affected by a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that can compromise staff admin sessions and inject malicious content into published pages and newsletters. Content editors and site administrators are at risk, and successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or reputational damage. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires user interaction, but the vendor has released a patch in Ghost 6.64.0.
