1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must already hold an authenticated Editor or Super Editor account on the target Ghost instance (PR:L) - this is the primary limiting factor and makes the flaw unexploitable by anonymous outsiders. The specific prerequisite is the staff role-assignment feature, which fails to correctly restrict which roles an Editor/Super Editor may grant; exploitation targets existing Author and Contributor accounts to elevate them to Editor or Super Editor. No user interaction from a victim is required (UI:N) and no special non-default configuration is needed - any multi-user Ghost deployment on versions 0.5.0 through before 6.64.0 is affected. Risk is inherently bounded to instances that provision Editor/Super Editor roles to parties who are not fully trusted administrators.

Impact

This is a medium-severity privilege-escalation flaw (CWE-269) with a vendor-provided CVSS 4.0 vector of AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N (score 5.3). The signals are internally consistent and point to limited real-world risk: exploitation is network-reachable and low-complexity, but requires existing authenticated access at the Editor or Super Editor level (PR:L), and the impact is confined to integrity (VI:L) with no confidentiality or availability effect and no scope change. No EPSS score was supplied in the input, and the vulnerability is NOT listed in CISA KEV; no public exploit code is referenced. Therefore there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The practical risk is insider/abuse-of-trust: a semi-privileged staff member escalating other accounts (and, by chaining, potentially themselves/peers) to higher editorial roles. This is a legitimate but moderate priority - it is not a remote-unauthenticated RCE and the high-CVSS-but-low-real-risk concern does not apply here because the CVSS is already appropriately medium. Prioritize patching on multi-author Ghost instances where not all Editors are fully trusted; deprioritize on single-admin or small trusted-team blogs.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A malicious or compromised staff member holding the Editor or Super Editor role in a shared Ghost instance uses the role-assignment functionality to promote an Author or Contributor account (which they control or collude with) to Editor or Super Editor, despite lacking the permission to grant those roles. No public exploit code is referenced; the action is performed through the application's normal staff-management interface over the authenticated network session. The result is unauthorized expansion of editorial privileges within the publication.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026

Privilege escalation in Ghost CMS (TryGhost Ghost) versions 0.5.0 through before 6.64.0 allows an authenticated Editor or Super Editor to assign their own elevated role to other staff accounts, promoting existing Author and Contributor users to Editor or Super Editor without holding the authority to do so. Exploitation is gated by the attacker already holding an Editor or Super Editor account (PR:L in the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N, vendor CVSS 4.0 score 5.3), so anonymous outsiders cannot abuse it, and the effect is limited to integrity rather than confidentiality or availability. A vendor-supplied patch is available and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor patch: patch availability is confirmed, and because the affected range terminates before 6.64.0, upgrading Ghost to 6.64.0 or later is the remediation path - confirm the exact fixed build against the vendor advisory GHSA-4pvx-fwjj-8gpc (https://github.com/TryGhost/Ghost/security/advisories/GHSA-4pvx-fwjj-8gpc) before scheduling the upgrade. Until the upgrade is completed, treat every Editor and Super Editor account as effectively able to mint further Editors/Super Editors, so the highest-value compensating control is to remove or downgrade Editor/Super Editor privileges for anyone who is not a fully trusted administrator and to keep the number of such accounts minimal - the trade-off is reduced editorial throughput and more centralised publishing workflows. Concurrently audit the staff roster in Ghost Admin for unexpected Editor or Super Editor accounts that pre-date the upgrade, since any promotion performed during the exposure window persists after patching; reverting those accounts requires manual role changes and re-issuing credentials for the affected users. Restrict network/API access to the Ghost Admin interface (for example by IP allow-listing or placing it behind an authenticated reverse proxy) to shrink the population of users who can reach the vulnerable role-assignment endpoint - this adds operational friction for legitimate remote editors. Log and alert on staff role-change and invitation events so that any future misuse is detected quickly, and review the ENISA EUVD entry EUVD-2026-91423 and the VulnCheck advisory for updated IOCs or version guidance. No vendor-released fix for versions below 6.64.0 exists, so backporting or staying on an older branch is not a supported mitigation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a CWE-269 improper privilege management issue in Ghost's staff role-assignment functionality. Ghost uses a role-based hierarchy of staff roles - Contributor, Author, Editor, Super Editor and Owner/Administrator - where each tier is supposed to be able to grant only equal-or-lower roles. The affected code path fails to correctly restrict which roles an Editor or Super Editor may grant, meaning the role parameter supplied during staff invitation/role-change operations is not validated against the acting user's own privileges. As a result a lower-privileged staff member can submit a role assignment that names an elevated role and have it accepted, escalating the target account and, by extension, gaining the editorial/publishing capabilities that come with the Editor or Super Editor tier. The vulnerable component is the multi-user staff management logic reachable over the network (AV:N) with no user interaction required from the victim (UI:N) and no special non-default configuration. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:tryghost:ghost:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* reflects that the whole Ghost product line in the stated range is affected; per EUVD the affected range is Ghost 0.5.0 < 6.64.0. The primary limiting factor is that a valid, authenticated Editor or Super Editor session is required, so risk is confined to deployments that hand out those roles to parties who are not fully trusted administrators.

DescriptionCVE.org

Ghost 0.5.0 before 6.64.0 does not correctly restrict staff role assignment, allowing users with the Editor or Super Editor role to assign their own role to other staff despite lacking permission to do so. An authenticated Editor or Super Editor can promote Author and Contributor users to Editor or Super Editor.
