MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires ALL of: (1) a logged-in WordPress Administrator (the only role with the unfiltered_html capability the attack abuses) who is (2) actively on an open Download post edit screen, and (3) is successfully social-engineered into visiting an attacker-controlled page that sends a cross-origin postMessage to that editor; the injected payload only reaches victims once (4) the affected page is rendered on the frontend via the [download_data] shortcode. Limiting factors: the attack is gated on administrator interaction and an open editor context (so it is not truly no-interaction despite UI:N), affects only Download Monitor ≤5.2.10, and depends on the site actually using the [download_data] shortcode for frontend delivery. The unauthenticated framing applies to the attacker's starting position, not to the required admin victim. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditional risk rather than a drop-everything emergency. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C) and 7.2 HIGH score imply a network-reachable, unauthenticated, no-interaction stored XSS - but that characterization conflicts directly with the description, which states the attack REQUIRES tricking an authenticated Administrator into visiting an attacker-controlled page while a Download edit screen is open. The vector's UI:N is therefore almost certainly wrong: real exploitation is UI-dependent (social-engineering an admin) and the injection only persists because it abuses the Administrator's unfiltered_html capability. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active or widespread exploitation. The scope change (S:C) and C:L/I:L are consistent with stored XSS executing in other users' browser contexts. Net: a credible, Wordfence-reported stored XSS in a popular plugin that warrants prompt patching, but the required administrator interaction and specific open-editor precondition make mass, unauthenticated exploitation unrealistic despite the HIGH base score. Verify the UI metric with the vendor/Wordfence before treating this as no-interaction. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious web page and lures a logged-in WordPress Administrator who has a Download edit screen open into visiting it; the page uses cross-origin postMessage to inject a script payload into the editor, which is saved unfiltered thanks to the admin's unfiltered_html capability. The stored payload is later rendered verbatim by the [download_data] shortcode on the public frontend, executing in the browser of every visitor who views that page. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, so weaponization effort would fall on the attacker. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 02, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the WordPress Download Monitor plugin up to 5.2.10 lets an unauthenticated attacker initiate a cross-origin postMessage attack that injects arbitrary web scripts into Download post content, which then execute for frontend visitors when the [download_data] shortcode renders the stored payload. Exploitation is not a simple unauthenticated request: it requires tricking a logged-in Administrator who has unfiltered_html and an open Download edit screen into visiting an attacker-controlled page, and the site must use the affected shortcode for delivery. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the assessed severity is conditional rather than a drop-everything emergency; the published CVSS is 7.2, while our assessment uses CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (Trac changeset/commit); a released patched version later than 5.2.10 is not independently confirmed from the provided data, so the primary action is to update Download Monitor once the vendor-published patched release is available and verified, and to consult the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/59d4c073-af86-4e60-87f5-94cc46f407a2?source=cve and the Trac changeset at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?reponame=&old=3716767%40download-monitor&new=3716767%40download-monitor. If immediate update is not possible, deactivate the Download Monitor plugin until a fixed version is confirmed; this removes download management and shortcode functionality as a trade-off. Alternatively, remove or stop using the [download_data] shortcode on frontend pages to cut the unescaped post_content rendering path, at the cost of losing that download data display. Restrict unfiltered_html via DISALLOW_UNFILTERED_HTML or tighter Administrator role assignments to reduce the persistence vector, though this can break legitimate unfiltered HTML layouts. Deploy a Content-Security-Policy that blocks inline and unauthorized script sources to reduce execution, with the trade-off that legitimate inline scripts may break. Limit Administrator accounts and train them not to browse attacker-controlled pages while a Download edit screen is open, since this social-engineering step is a prerequisite.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation, Cross-site Scripting). Download Monitor admin-side JavaScript in assets/js/download-operations.js (referenced lines L11 and L34) processes cross-origin postMessage events without adequate origin validation or input sanitization, allowing an attacker-controlled page to push content into an open Download editor. Because an Administrator has the unfiltered_html capability, the payload is saved without sanitization in post_content, and src/Shortcodes.php (referenced L285) later renders that stored content through the [download_data] shortcode without output escaping, causing script execution in victims' browsers. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:wpchill:download_monitor:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, and EUVD-2026-91245 tracks Download Monitor 0 through 5.2.10. Although the published CVSS vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N with score 7.2, our independent assessment uses CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N because the attack requires Administrator interaction on an open editor screen; the PR:N reflects the attacker's starting position, not the victim role.

DescriptionCVE.org
The Download Monitor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Cross-Origin postMessage to Admin Editor in all versions up to, and including, 5.2.10 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires the attacker to trick an authenticated Administrator into visiting an attacker-controlled page that targets an open Download edit screen, after which the payload is persisted unfiltered via the Administrator's unfiltered_html capability and later emitted verbatim to the frontend by the [download_data] shortcode's unescaped post_content render path.
Executive ViewAI
The WordPress Download Monitor plugin (versions up to 5.2.10) is affected by a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that could allow attackers to inject malicious scripts into download pages, potentially compromising site visitors and administrators. Although exploitation requires tricking an administrator into visiting a malicious page, successful attacks could lead to session hijacking, data theft, or malware distribution, undermining customer trust and regulatory compliance. With no vendor patch available, the organization must take immediate mitigating actions to protect its web assets and users.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: disable or remove the Download Monitor plugin if not business-critical; remove the [download_data] shortcode from all content; restrict administrative access to trusted networks; implement WAF virtual patching rules for CVE-2026-100182; enforce CSP headers; and educate administrators on phishing and social engineering risks. Monitor vendor channels for a patch and apply immediately upon release.
