On-path MITM plus messageID-collision timing gives AC:H; no attacker auth so PR:N; primary impact is auth-decision integrity (I:H, S:C), with limited confidentiality and no clear availability impact.

vuln.today treats the vendor’s rating as authoritative. A higher third-party CVSS (e.g. CISA-ADP) is shown for transparency but does not drive the headline severity.

3DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in 389-ds-base. The server does not discard plaintext bytes already buffered from a client connection when negotiating StartTLS, allowing an on-path attacker to inject a crafted LDAP message that is processed after the TLS upgrade and whose response is delivered to the client in place of the client's own pending operation's response, due to messageID collision. This can cause a client application to treat a failed authentication (bind) attempt as successful.
AnalysisAI
StartTLS handling in 389-ds-base does not discard plaintext bytes buffered before the TLS upgrade, allowing an on-path attacker to inject a crafted LDAP message whose messageID collides with a client's pending bind and causes the client to treat a failed authentication as successful. Red Hat Directory Server 11, 12, and 13 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 deployments using 389-ds-base with StartTLS are affected. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an active on-path (man-in-the-middle) network position on an LDAP connection that uses StartTLS to upgrade a plaintext channel - the flaw depends on the server not discarding plaintext bytes buffered before the TLS handshake. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine high-severity integrity flaw, but the real-world attack bar is higher than the 9.0 base score suggests. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | No vendor-released patch version is identified in the provided data; apply fixed 389-ds-base packages as soon as Red Hat publishes them through the advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-86345 and track Bugzilla 2529332. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory every Red Hat Directory Server instance (versions 11, 12, and 13) and every Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 host running 389-ds-base with StartTLS enabled, and disable StartTLS in favor of LDAPS on port 636 wherever directory traffic crosses an untrusted or shared network segment; where LDAPS cannot be enabled immediately, restrict LDAP and StartTLS traffic to trusted, integrity-protected paths (IPsec, MACsec, or private VLANs) and prefer certificate-based or SASL/GSSAPI bind methods that do not rely on StartTLS negotiation integrity. …
