MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated MediaWiki account with elevated privileges (vendor PR:H) on a wiki that has the Wikbase/Wikibase extension installed and enabled, plus a victim who views the page containing the injected payload (UI:P). Limiting factors: the flaw is not exploitable against unauthenticated visitors as an attacker, needs a privileged contributor to plant the script, depends on the optional Wikibase extension being deployed, and is confined to affected versions 1.46, 1.45, and 1.43; impacts are limited to Low confidentiality/integrity/availability per the vendor. |
| Impact | This is a low-risk, basic Cross-Site Scripting flaw (CWE-80) in the MediaWiki Wikbase (almost certainly 'Wikibase'/Wikidata) extension. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 0.3 is exceptionally low, driven by AV:L, AC:H, AT:P (present attack requirement), PR:H (high privileges), UI:P (passive user interaction) and only Low impacts to confidentiality/integrity/availability. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public proof-of-concept identified - the vector's E:P (Proof-of-Concept exploit maturity) reflects a theoretical/PoC state rather than active exploitation, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are internally consistent in pointing to low real-world risk: even for an XSS class bug, the vendor modeled it as requiring elevated privileges plus victim interaction with only limited impact. One notable tension is AV:L: XSS is normally delivered over the network (AV:N) via a crafted wiki page/parameter, so the vendor's local attack-vector choice is questionable and I diverge from it in my own assessment. Bottom line: this is a high-noise, low-priority issue - patch during normal maintenance, not an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An authenticated MediaWiki user with sufficient privileges on a wiki running the Wikbase/Wikibase extension injects a crafted script-bearing payload into an editable field; when another user views the affected page, the script executes in their browser session. No public exploit code is available, and the vendor models the flaw as requiring elevated privileges plus victim interaction, sharply limiting practical abuse. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 30, 2026
Cross-site scripting in the MediaWiki Wikbase (Wikibase) extension lets a privileged, authenticated contributor inject script-related HTML into wiki content that is subsequently rendered to other users visiting the affected page. The flaw affects installations running the extension on MediaWiki 1.46, 1.45, and 1.43, and requires both an attacker account with elevated rights and a victim who views the crafted page; independent assessment confirms a low-risk, basic XSS (CWE-80) with Low confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact, matching the very low vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 0.3. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed: the referenced Gerrit change Ie7a35b211565148e0cae437a4a8c41633b81f1b3 (linked from the CVE record) is where the output-neutralization correction was proposed, and administrators should track Wikimedia Phabricator T182213 (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T182213) for the versioned release decision before assuming a fixed tarball exists. Where an immediate upgrade cannot be scheduled on wikis running MediaWiki 1.45, 1.46, or 1.43 with the Wikbase/Wikibase extension enabled, the most direct compensating control is to remove the extension from LocalSettings.php (w:$wgEnabledExtensions / wfLoadExtension) until a patched release is available, at the trade-off of losing all Wikibase item, property, and query functionality on that wiki; a narrower alternative is to restrict the edit and page-creation rights that reach the vulnerable rendering path via $wgGroupPermissions (revoking edit on the relevant namespaces from lower-trust groups), which reduces but does not eliminate exposure because any remaining privileged contributor can still plant payloads. A Content-Security-Policy header that blocks inline script execution mitigates the impact of a successful injection but can break skin scripts and gadget extensions, and should be validated in staging first. Applying MediaWiki's standard sanitation and $wgRawHtml restrictions is also advisable, though it does not substitute for the upstream fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is a basic reflected/stored cross-site scripting class flaw, CWE-80 (Improper Neutralization of Script-Related HTML Tags in a Web Page), where user-supplied markup is echoed back into HTML without adequately neutralizing tags such as <script> or event handler attributes. The affected component is the Wikibase extension (referenced in CPE as cpe:2.3:a:the_wikimedia_foundation:mediawiki_wikbase_extension:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*), the MediaWiki add-on that provides structured, machine-readable data storage and item/property editing behind Wikidata-style wikis; EUVD assigns it EUVD-2026-90211. Because the injection point sits inside a wiki editing workflow, the attack surface is not the open internet but the editorial interface, which explains the vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector emphasizing local attack vector, high privileges, partial user interaction, and Low/Low/Low impact (VC:L/VI:L/VA:L, SC:L/SI:L/SA:L). The reference set points to upstream coordination artifacts: a Wikimedia Phabricator task (T182213) and a Gerrit change (Ie7a35b211565148e0cae437a4a8c41633b81f1b3).

Web-delivered XSS is network-reachable (AV:N) and requires an authenticated contributor to inject (PR:L) plus victim rendering (UI:R); script runs in the victim's browser context (S:C) with limited C/I impact and no availability effect.
