| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a target service that uses Apache WSS4J (versions before 4.0.2, 3.0.6, or 2.4.4) and is configured to accept and validate SAML sender-vouches assertions through the DOM security processor. The attacker needs only network reachability to the SOAP endpoint - no credentials, no user interaction, and no non-default toolchain - because the flaw is that an unsigned assertion carrying an attacker-controlled key is accepted as authenticated. Deployments that do not process SAML sender-vouches assertions, or that have upgraded to the fixed versions, are not exploitable via this vector. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority vulnerability, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk case. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 9.8) is internally consistent with the description: an unauthenticated remote attacker forges authenticated SOAP messages, directly defeating the security control the library exists to enforce (CWE-287, authentication bypass). Because WSS4J is a security-enforcement library, a bypass here has full CIA impact on any service that trusts it for message authentication. No EPSS score, CISA KEV entry, or public POC was provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the real-world signal is currently theoretical rather than observed. However, the low attack complexity, absence of any authentication or user-interaction requirement, and the fact that the flaw lets an attacker impersonate authenticated principals make this the type of issue that is quickly weaponized once details circulate (an oss-security advisory is already public). The main mitigating factor is not the flaw's severity but its reachability: only deployments that accept and process SAML sender-vouches assertions through the DOM security processor are affected. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker targeting a SOAP web service that uses Apache WSS4J for WS-Security crafts a malicious SOAP request containing an unsigned SAML sender-vouches assertion embedding a key the attacker controls. The DOM security processor accepts the forged assertion as valid authentication, letting the attacker impersonate a legitimate authenticated user without any credentials or prior access. No public exploit code is identified yet, but the oss-security disclosure describes the mechanism and exploitation requires only a network-reachable endpoint. |

Unauthenticated remote attackers can bypass authentication in Apache WSS4J (4.0.0 before 4.0.2, 3.0.0 before 3.0.6, and 2.x before 2.4.4) and forge authenticated SOAP messages by submitting a crafted unsigned SAML sender-vouches assertion that carries an attacker-controlled key, which the DOM security processor accepts as proof of identity. Any SOAP service configured to accept and validate SAML sender-vouches assertions through that processor is exposed at the network layer alone, with no credentials and no user interaction required, yielding critical confidentiality and integrity impact (CVSS 3.1 base 9.8, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H). At time of analysis no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified, but the low attack complexity and the fact that the vulnerable code path is a security trust boundary make this a genuine high-priority vulnerability rather than a high-CVSS-but-low-risk case; remediation is straightforward because vendor patches exist.
Earlier versions of this analysis (1)
Authentication bypass in Apache WSS4J allows unauthenticated remote attackers to forge authenticated SOAP messages by submitting a crafted unsigned SAML sender-vouches assertion with an attacker-controlled key, affecting the wss4j-ws-security-dom DOM security processor in versions 4.0.0-4.0.1, 3.0.0-3.0.5, and before 2.4.4. Fixed versions are 4.0.2, 3.0.6, and 2.4.4; no public exploit code or CISA KEV listing was identified at time of analysis, but the assessed CVSS:3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N indicates high confidentiality and integrity impact when a service accepts SAML sender-vouches assertions.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Apache WSS4J to one of the vendor-released fixed versions: 4.0.2 (4.x branch), 3.0.6 (3.0.x branch), or 2.4.4 (2.x branch), choosing the line matching the API level already in use; these are the versions named in the upstream advisory (https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2026/q3/1023, mirrored via https://ws.apache.org/ and the Apache mailing list threads referenced by NVD and EUVD). Because WSS4J is a library, upgrading the dependency is not sufficient on its own - verify that the consuming framework or SOAP stack (for example a CXF or Axis2-based service) is rebuilt and redeployed against the patched artifact, and check transitive dependency locks or shaded JARs that may still pin an old copy. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, disable acceptance of SAML sender-vouches assertions in the DOM security processor and require signed assertions or a different subject-confirmation method; the trade-off is that legitimate sender-vouches federation flows will stop working until the patch is applied, so test dependent integrations first. Tightening network exposure of the SOAP endpoint (allowing only known partner IPs, placing it behind mutual TLS) reduces reachability but does not fix the underlying trust-boundary flaw and should be treated only as a temporary compensating control, since attackers with access to an allowed path or a compromised partner channel can still forge assertions. Review logs for unsigned or anomalous sender-vouches assertions and for authenticated actions originating from unexpected principals as a post-upgrade detection measure.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Apache WSS4J is the Java implementation of WS-Security, the OASIS standard that adds signing, encryption, and security tokens to SOAP messages; it is embedded in stacks such as Apache CXF, Axis2, and various Spring-based web service frameworks, and is widely deployed in enterprise SOAP integrations and identity federation flows. This issue is rooted in the DOM-based security processor, which handles the incoming message as a DOM tree before token validation. When a SAML sender-vouches assertion is processed, the sender is expected to prove that it is entitled to speak on behalf of the subject asserted in the token; the assertion itself normally does not need to carry the subject's private key, but the relying party must still establish that the token is authentic and was not modified in transit. The flaw, classified as CWE-287 (Improper Authentication), is that an unsigned assertion containing an attacker-supplied key is accepted as authenticated, so the integrity check that should bind the assertion to a trusted issuer is effectively skipped - an improper-authentication condition at the token-processing layer rather than a memory-safety or injection bug. Because the bypass occurs inside cryptographic/token validation, downstream application authorization decisions based on the forged principal will happily succeed, meaning the impact propagates well beyond WSS4J itself into whatever business logic protects the SOAP endpoint. EUVD tracks the affected ranges as 4.0.0 < 4.0.2, 3.0.0 < 3.0.6, and 0 < 2.4.4 (all 2.x releases before 2.4.4).
