Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated Fider administrator who can configure the webhook feature or a custom OAuth provider's token/profile endpoint URL - these are the only user-configurable outbound-request URLs affected. The attacker must also control DNS for the configured hostname and win a DNS-rebinding race, making the name resolve to a public address during validate.WebhookURL preflight and to a private/internal address (e.g. 169.254.169.254, 10.0.0.0/8, cloud metadata) at dial time. Limiting factors: admin privilege (PR:H), high attack complexity plus a specific timing/attack requirement (AC:H/AT:P), and that instances with env.Config.AllowPrivateNetworkTargets intentionally enabled are out of scope. Fixed in v0.38.0, which enforces the IsBlockedIP check on the resolved IP at dial time so rebinding no longer bypasses it.

Impact

This is a low-priority issue despite being a network-vector SSRF (CWE-918). The vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 2.1 (Low), and the vector's own metrics explain why: AC:H and AT:P mean exploitation depends on winning a DNS-rebinding timing race between validation and connection, and PR:H means the attacker must already be a Fider administrator (only admins can configure webhook and custom OAuth provider URLs). Impact is capped at VC:L/VI:L with SC:L/SI:L - limited reads/writes against internal services or cloud metadata, not full compromise. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code identified in the provided data, so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The signals are internally consistent (high-privilege, high-complexity, low impact all point the same direction); there is no CVSS-vs-description conflict to flag. Net: a legitimate defense-in-depth fix, but not an urgent operational priority given that the attacker must already hold admin control over the instance.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A Fider administrator (or someone who has compromised an admin account) configures a webhook or custom OAuth token/profile URL pointing at a hostname they control via DNS. They exploit the time-of-check/time-of-use gap so the name resolves to a public IP during Fider's preflight validation but rebinds to a private IP (e.g. 169.254.169.254 cloud metadata or an internal service) when the server actually dials, causing Fider to issue requests to internal targets. No public exploit code is identified, and the AC:H/AT:P metrics reflect the timing precision the rebinding race requires.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026

Server-side request forgery in Fider before 0.38.0 lets an authenticated administrator who controls DNS for a configured hostname redirect the server's outbound HTTP requests to internal services or cloud metadata endpoints by exploiting a time-of-check/time-of-use gap between URL validation and the actual connection. The exposure is narrow: only webhook URLs and custom OAuth provider token/profile URLs are user-configurable outbound targets, the attacker needs admin privileges and must win a DNS-rebinding race (high attack complexity), and instances with AllowPrivateNetworkTargets deliberately enabled are out of scope, so this remains a low-priority issue despite the network vector (CWE-918). No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no evidence of active exploitation; v0.38.0 fixes the flaw by re-checking the resolved IP at dial time.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Fider v0.38.0, the vendor-released patch that enforces the netguard.IsBlockedIP check on the resolved IP at dial time and closes the DNS-rebinding TOCTOU (commit 45f5627b9fd15b912fb9092635c863fb4c91dd69; advisory https://github.com/getfider/fider/security/advisories/GHSA-whx4-hxwq-qgjh). If immediate upgrade is not possible, remove or repoint to trusted, non-attacker-controlled hosts any administrator-configured webhook and custom OAuth token/profile URLs, and tightly restrict who holds the administrator role, since the attack requires an authenticated admin - the trade-off is loss of those integrations. As compensating network controls, block egress from the Fider host to RFC1918 ranges, 169.254.0.0/16 (cloud IMDS at 169.254.169.254), Azure WireServer 168.63.129.16 and 192.0.0.192, and require session-token-based metadata access (for example IMDSv2) where available; this adds firewall maintenance overhead and can break legitimate internal callbacks. Do not treat enabling the AllowPrivateNetworkTargets option as a fix - it disables the guard entirely. Finally, note that in v0.38.0 requests protected by BlockPrivateNetworkTargets do not use HTTP(S)_PROXY, so environments relying on an outbound proxy for webhook delivery must re-validate that behavior after upgrading.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Fider validates administrator-supplied outbound URLs (webhooks and custom OAuth provider token/profile endpoints) with a friendly preflight helper, validate.WebhookURL in app/pkg/validate/general.go at v0.37.0, which resolves the hostname and rejects private targets. The request is issued later by the shared client in app/services/httpclient/httpclient.go, which re-resolves the name at connect time - the check-versus-use gap classified as CWE-918. An attacker controlling DNS can answer the preflight lookup with a public address and the subsequent dial with a private one. The fix (commit 45f5627b9fd15b912fb9092635c863fb4c91dd69, released as v0.38.0) adds app/pkg/netguard/netguard.go and a BlockPrivateNetworkTargets flag on cmd.HTTPRequest; netguard.IsBlockedIP is enforced at dial time against the exact resolved IP, so it cannot be bypassed by DNS rebinding. Blocked ranges include RFC1918 space, loopback, CGNAT 100.64.0.0/10, link-local 169.254.0.0/16 (AWS/GCP/Azure IMDS at 169.254.169.254), Azure WireServer 168.63.129.16, IETF-protocol 192.0.0.0/24 covering Oracle Cloud metadata 192.0.0.192, benchmarking, multicast and reserved IPv4 blocks, plus IPv6 unspecified/loopback, ULA fc00::/7, link-local fe80::/10, documentation and multicast ranges; IPv4-in-IPv6 transition forms (NAT64 64:ff9b::/96, 6to4 2002::/16, Teredo 2001::/32, IPv4-compatible ::/96, SIIT ::ffff:0:0:0/96) are unwrapped so embedded private IPv4 addresses are still caught, with 192.0.0.9 and 192.0.0.10 exempted as globally reachable. A nil or unparseable IP is treated as blocked, and guarded requests do not use HTTP(S)_PROXY.

DescriptionCVE.org

Fider before 0.38.0 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability due to a time-of-check time-of-use gap in URL validation for webhooks and custom OAuth provider endpoints. Administrators controlling DNS can perform DNS rebinding attacks to make the Fider server send requests to internal services or cloud metadata endpoints.
